All Questions(ubuntu)

I downloaded a new version of VS Code today. When I try to install it using GDebi, GDebi says: "Error: Dependency is not satisfiable: libglib2.0-0 (>=2.37.3)". Note the hyphen in the first version and the dots in the second one. Is this a clue?

What can I do to fix this please?

It may be relevant that a few weeks ago I upgraded from ubuntu 24.04.0 to 24.04.1. The update ran until very late at night and I think that I was so tired I missed an error message. So something is probably wrong with my system but I don't know what it is! Everything has worked up until now and all the software updates seem to have installed correctly including the one I did before trying to update Visual Studio Code.

I use my NVIDIA GPU's sound output as main sound sink. However, from time to time, I plug in an EPOS headset (a USB dongle that wirelessly communicates to the actual headset).

Under KUbuntu 22.04, pulseaudio would automatically switch to EPOS for sound input and output.

Sinc upgrading to KUbuntu 24.04.1, this has not been working as well, and I am at a loss to debug it because I am not familiar with pipewire nor with the pipewire-pulse "bridge".

Upon plugging in the EPOS dongle, the switch does not happen correctly : in pavucontrol, EPOS is shown as the default source and sink, but there is no actual sound. I can get it to work by using pavucontrol to select NVIDIA GPU as the default, then again EPOS.

On some occasion (during a webconference), I suddenly got no more sound. I restored it by doing the same manoeuvre in pavucontrol. But it went awry again when I closed pavucontrol. This however does not happen systematically but seems random.

My configuration is, I think, pretty standard for an upgrade from 22.04 to 24.04. The only change I made is I created a symlink to /bin/true under $HOME/bin/pulseaudio : this enabled a game (Victoria 3) to correctly detect the NVIDIA GPU sound sink (it would output to the computer case's internal speaker otherwise).

FYI, the webconference was with Big Blue Button under Firefox (obtained from Mozilla directly, not the snap distrib).

The device is a Maono Maonocaster C2 Neo. Ubuntu 24.04.

I can select the device for both input and output using Audacity when routed through the JACK server but I cannot use it for general system audio.

Is there a way to force Pulse to "see" this device and let me select as system in/out ?

After typing code . in WSL running Ubuntu 24.04, VS Code automatically installed itself. I am now trying to uninstall it, but cannot find it anywhere. sudo apt purge code, sudo apt-get purge code, sudo dpkg --purge code, and sudo snap remove --purge code all tell me that code was not installed. The same holds for alternative names, incl. vscode and visual-studio-code. When I enter code ., VS Code opens though. It clearly is installed.

I want to keep the Windows version of VS Code, but remove its Linux installation. Do you know how I can do that?

To clarify questions in the comments:

1. I have simply entered code ., nothing else. Unexpectedly, that was enough to trigger an installation. This behavior might be specific to WSL.
2. snap list tells me that no snaps are installed. Anything installed with sudo snap install --classic should show up there.

I have PCI-E USB extension cards which are not working properly after a kernel update: USB devices are detected but dropped immediately. This means I cannot use, for example, my wireless headphone's USB stick in that extension card only in a USB slot of the motherboard.

I experience the issue since linux-image-6.8.0-40-generic kernel package was installed in my Ubuntu 22.04 LTS then also in Ubuntu 24.04 LTS with 6.8.0-44-generic.

Any idea how to fix it?
