Atom text editor gone after update to 20.10, error: Depends: gvfs-bin but it is not installable

  • 5

Today I succesfully upgraded to Ubuntu 20.10. However, I noticed that the Atom text editor that I use was gone after the update. So, I tried installing it using sudo apt install atom. That didn't work and threw the following error:

Some packages could not be installed. This may mean that you have
requested an impossible situation or if you are using the unstable
distribution that some required packages have not yet been created
or been moved out of Incoming.
The following information may help to resolve the situation:

The following packages have unmet dependencies:
 atom : Depends: gvfs-bin but it is not installable
E: Unable to correct problems, you have held broken packages.

Does this mean that I upgraded to 20.10 too soon and that Atom does not support it yet? I tried a few things, like

  • Reinstalling gvfs-bin;

    Package gvfs-bin is not available, but is referred to by another package. This may mean that the package is missing, has been obsoleted, or is only available from another source

    E: Package 'gvfs-bin' has no installation candidate

  • apt clean, apt autoremove, apt install --fix-broken, apt install -f

atom editor (snap) opens with two strange tabs

  • 4

I have a project with several files that are opened automatically when I launch the atom editor.

Recently, the atom editor (version 1.48) starts with two empty files with strange names:

ATOM_DISABLE_SHELLING_OUT_FOR_ENVIRONMENT=false

and

atom

It tries to save the first file in my home directory and the second file to the /usr/bin directory (which is not possible due to permissions, of course).

So, I reverted to atom version 1.47 (snap revision 252) where this problem does not occur.

Is there something wrong with revision 257 of atom snap?

Update: Same problem with version 1.49.0 too!

failed to map segment from shared object

  • 4

Whenever I am trying to run an application I encounter this error, for example running Atom in terminal resulted in this error:

/usr/lib/snapd/snap-confine: error while loading shared libraries: libudev.so.1: failed to map segment from shared object

Have anyone has a clue how can I fix this? I am using Ubuntu 18.04.

I have tried sudo apt install libdvd-pkg and sudo apt-get install libudev0:i386 which did not have any result.

How to open a terminal from within Atom?

  • 10

I'm currently working with Atom, and sometimes I want to open a terminal on the directory my working file is. To do this, I usually have to open the folder in nautilus (right clicking the file in atom) and then I open a terminal on that directory from nautilus (right click).

I wonder if there is a way to open the terminal in the file directory without having to open nautilus first.
