I wiped my SSD and installed Ubuntu from a flash drive. After restarting multiple times, since the computer was always restarting, I decided to boot up without my flash drive plugged in and it worked.

I opened BIOS to take a look at the boot order there was kind of a mesh character that showed up instead of something like "Ubuntu". I then decided to click on load default features to see what happened and saw <null string> below the boot order sign.

Since I was to afraid to let it boot up like that I decided to revert the changes. The computer still works fine with this strange thing but I was wondering if everything went OK.

Ubuntu 16.04 running on a vagrant virtual machine on a Windows 8.1 host.

My xdebug.ini file is symlinked to a directory that's shared with the host machine. (This is so I can create new machines and have xdebug.ini set up how I want, and and edits I make to it are always available on the Windows host - I don't have to worry about backing up configurations from the VM)

It seems like the directory is mounted after apache has been started during boot. So I always have to restart apache to load xdebug.

Can I make it so that apache starts after the shared directory is mounted? Or automatically restart apache after startup, so I don't have to do it manually?

I successfully installed a dual-boot (Ubuntu 18.04 and win10) on my notebook.

Unfortunately I'm still new to the Linux world and my terminal skills and Linux knowledge are close to bad. But I'm willing to learn.

My concern: Every time my machine restarts or I want to switch the OS I have to wait for the grub bootloader and then choose the OS. Normally I will not change my running OS for example if I worked in Ubuntu, I would like to boot back into it or the other way.

Now I want to write a little program that automatically changes the default boot entry to the other OS and then reboots the system.
I guess the problem is not writing this little script for Ubuntu. But how should I realize this for windows?

My To do list based on my knowledge.

• Somehow move the /etc/default/grub file to a small fat32 partition so windows is able to read it and make changes. ~probably easy
• Run the sudo update-grub equivalent command in windows? ~this one is way beyond my knowledge and maybe totally stupid - like running an file.exe on Ubuntu.

I already searched for similar question but without finding a reasonable good solution for me.

• Some recommended to teach windows to read/write on the Ubuntu drive. I think that my precious Ubuntu drive should not be violated by windows.
• Or to install another bootloader. I would like to stay with GRUB, because its working and the default?
• Make changes to the /boot/grub/grub.cfg or /boot/grub/grubenv I'm not 100% sure about it, but most users don't recommend messing with the grub.cfg file because its generated from other files?

I know that I can probably just use a function in GRUB to run the last booted OS as default. But when I want to switch from one OS to the other I like the idea of just running a little own program instead of waiting for the reboot then hitting a key before the timer runs out... and if you miss this opportunity - reboot again -

So here are my two questions:

1. Boot Order

Hi, as per the guides given in the ubuntu.com help wiki, I'm supposed to ensure that my boot order is set to give highest priority to the CD drive first and then the hard drive before trying to install ubuntu. So I went to my BIOS set up, and under boot options, the boot order was set to:

• Sata PM: TSSTCorp CDD VDW SH 2 (1st priority)

• SATA SM: WDC WD5000AAKX003CA (2nd priority)

Those are also the only two options available for the boot order. Can anyone help me understand what these boot order options represent? Are things already the way they're supposed to be, prior to my Ubuntu installation attempt?

1. Advice Regarding the 'Allocate Drive Space' dialog box of the Installer- which option to select?

Hi, I'm running a Windows 7 system at the moment with one physical hard drive, partitioned into 3 during the Windows installation: C (97 GB, this is where Windows is installed), D (255 GB, I'd like to keep this as a shared partition between Windows and Ubuntu where I keep my media) and E (107 GB, this is where I would like to install Ubuntu). Considering this will be my first time trying to install an OS, so I have zero experience, which option from the Allocate Drive Space screen of the Ubuntu installer should I use: . Install Ubuntu 12.04 LTS alongside (other operating systems); or, . Something else (advanced)

The first option sounds the most automated (so I have a smaller chance of accidentally changing something I shouldn't), while the second option is clearly labelled advanced.

My question is: will the first option allow me to properly select the E drive for installing Ubuntu, or will it try to automatically install it in C?

Another concern: as per this webpage (http://news.softpedia.com/news/Installing-Ubuntu-12-04-LTS-266201.shtml), choosing option 1 will result in "Remember that, after the installation, the Windows boot loader will be overwritten by the Ubuntu boot loader!"

This sounds rather ominous- is it liable to cause problems for running Windows?

Basically, which option would be best suited for my target installation situation?

9 days ago I added Kubuntu 11.10 (Oneiric Ocelot) to Windows 7 on my computer. Since then I have spent 12 hours plus trying to change the default grub selection from Ubuntu to Windows. I have gotten several different kind of advice, but none of them work.

I have changed to GRUB_DEFAULT=5 and tried GRUB-DEFAULT "Windows......" But no matter what, when I restart, Ubuntu is again the one that starts as default.

When I open the text editor it clearly now states "Windows....." as default, and it also showed 5, when 5 was set as default, only when I start up the computer.... it is always ubuntu, unless I stand at the computer and when the page with the boot options comes (GNU GRUB version 1.99 - 12ubuntu5) I click down to the sixth and last entry, my windows....

How to make this work?
