I have tried the answer of this post:
sudo snap connect telegram-desktop:camera
However, I cannot make my external camera the one which telegram uses in the video calls. I cannot see the option to select the input devices neither for the micro nor for the video.
By default, Telegram only uses the in-build camera of my laptop, but I want to use my external camera instead.
I have the last snap version of telegram and Ubuntu 20.10
When I plug in my Cannon 50D camera with a USB cable into my laptop (running Ubuntu 19.10) and Shotwell pops up. But when I click on the 'Cannon Digital Camera' entry on the left sidebar an error message pops up that says,
"The camera is locked by another application. Please close any other application using the camera and try again."
I don't have any other applications open. Any ideas? It's not a fatal problem since I can access all the camera's photos with the file browser, but it's much for convenient to just click the little 'Import' button and have all my pics sorted by dates.

I have a Dell XPS 9370, which is known to have only one camera. But ls /dev/video* results in /dev/video0 /dev/video1 /dev/video2 /dev/video3, so four different camera devices.
These four cameras bubble up to the applications, e.g. Skype which lists four cameras, but just the first one (/dev/video0) works.
Does anybody know where the other entries come from? Or how to hide them from higher layers?

Cheese comes with an acceptable amount of " gnomish" dependencies but before installing it I am looking for a more Qt-pure alternative.
Kamera comes by default but it doesn't even see the laptop camera, asks me to select one in a full alphabetical list, Komoso is absent, Kamerka is very basic (no video). I know how to use VLC for this but what other options are there?
By "alternative to Cheese" I basically mean one that would quickly allow image and video capture.
My privacy feels invaded by the "active" light on my webcam turning on when I boot Ubuntu, and again when I login. It stays on for 3-4 seconds, then turns back off.
It's a Creative HD 1080p webcam that sits on top of the monitor, plugged in via USB.
