I need to create a list of checksums of the files that are inside a directory, including any subdirectories.

The command that I try to execute is the following:

 sha256sum -b *

Usage:


 -b = Read in Binary.

 * = Specifies that you must verify all file extensions.

With the command I get the following output:

sha256sum: test0: Is a directory e3d748fdf10adca15c96d77a38aa0447fa87af9c297cb0b75e314cc313367daf *test1.txt db0c7a354881fe2dd1b45642a68f6a971c7421e8fdffe56ffa7c740111e07274 *test2.txt

Instead of reporting that test0 is a directory, you should also generate the checksum of the content.

Do you recommend always using -b in any type of file? In what cases should -t be used?

Is it possible to filter the types of files I want to omit in the verification, without having to add all the files I want to admit? What command should I execute?

I looked for help but I do not find anything related.

I'm trying to better understand the use of "SHA256SUMS" and "grep." The Ubuntu verify and authenticate tutorial uses the following term: "sha256sum -c SHA256SUMS 2>&1 | grep OK" to verify the download hasn't been corrupted.

I understand it's checking at the SHA256SUMS file that contains two hash values, one for the Desktop version and one for the Live. The usage worked, and I checked it by manually verifying the hash values.

My question is what is the "SHA256SUMS 2>&1" portion doing? Also, it appears to be a part of the "SHA256SUMS" command, though I don't see that usage on the man page I use. Then somehow the result is piped to "grep" to pattern-match with no options.

I'd like to understand it well enough to use the technique in verifying that other software downloads haven't been corrupted.

I am trying to restore a function that I had on my last box. It added a tab in the properties menu of any file called "Digests". From there I could choose any/all of the hash formats, click hash and it would generate said checksums right there.

What I am trying to find out is either the name of the package or acquire the location of it's installation.
