How can I remove compton from Ubuntu 23.04
which compton
/usr/local/bin/compton
And with
apt list | grep compton
compton 1-1 [Ubuntu/lunar universe]
compton-conf 0.16.0-1ubuntu1 [Ubuntu/lunar universe]
But when I tried to remove
Package 'compton' is not installed, so not removed

I am trying to:
compton on i3wm such thati3wm the underlying windows are hidden (or are not drawn).For example's sake, let us take the application to be zathura.
I tried the following in my compton.conf:
opacity-rule = [
"90:class_g = 'Zathura' && !_NET_WM_STATE@:32a",
"0:_NET_WM_STATE@:32a *= '_NET_WM_STATE_HIDDEN'"
]
This doesn't make zathura transparent, but zathura is hidden if it is beneath any other transparent window in tabbed/ stacked window.
Next I tried the following in compton.conf:
opacity-rule = [
"90:class_g = 'Zathura'",
"0:_NET_WM_STATE@:32a *= '_NET_WM_STATE_HIDDEN'"
]
This does make zathura transparent, but this draws zathura beneath other windows when in tabbed or stacked mode in i3wm.
I found this and tried the suggested solution. That is, I replaced "0:_NET_WM_STATE@:32a *= '_NET_WM_STATE_HIDDEN'" with
"0:_NET_WM_STATE@[0]:32a = '_NET_WM_STATE_HIDDEN'",
"0:_NET_WM_STATE@[1]:32a = '_NET_WM_STATE_HIDDEN'",
"0:_NET_WM_STATE@[2]:32a = '_NET_WM_STATE_HIDDEN'",
"0:_NET_WM_STATE@[3]:32a = '_NET_WM_STATE_HIDDEN'",
"0:_NET_WM_STATE@[4]:32a = '_NET_WM_STATE_HIDDEN'"
However this made no change. Please help.

I still don't understand how to clone from git, so I downloaded the zip, clicking on Code and then the clone or download button, then extracted it and followed the instructions in README_org.md file. I installed the dependencies, then opened a terminal in the extracted folder and ran:

I had compton installed and added to my i3 config file, and it was working great until today it won't make the windows transparent on startup. When I tried killing the process (I have it setup as exec_always in my config file) and restarting it, I got this message on startup:

And then it just sits there with a blinking cursor, doing nothing. Does anyone know what to do? I searched for this error message but there is nothing except for one post on Arch forums and it wasn't helpful.
I am running Ubuntu 18.04 with i3 and Compton compositor. Now I installed termite and I really want a transparent background. which I can achieve by adding this in my termite config
[colors]
background = rgba(0, 0, 0, 0.5)
However this also makes the text within the terminal transparent which is hard on the eyes and makes some text not really legible. Only everyone just says that this way the text shouldn't be transparent.
Do any of you have an idea why the text is affected?
