Questions[gnome2](ubuntu)

I'm using Ubuntu 20.04 (standard), with GNOME Flashback.

9.10 was my first Ubuntu and I'm feeling nostalgic. I've managed to get as far as 'Classic GNOME Flashback' and change the wallpaper, but I'm hoping someone knows how to get the theme just right. I have tried doing the steps given in the forum thread how to get old ubuntu theme? like in karmic? but I can't get them to work. I got stuck on the last 2 comments.

I basically would like the human theme, looking like with the show desktop button, applications icon and computer icon in the corners to match Karmic Koala. (See the old article Review: Ubuntu 9.10 first look.)

It's just for nostalgia, I've been looking into this for hours and struggling.

Recently updated to Ubuntu 20.04 and then discovered that I can change the background of the gnome-panel (I'm a gnome guy and using flashback to have the old gnome2 stuff running, thus gnome-panel). Looks great however on one of my machines (desktop) some of the indicators are opaque while the rest of the panel is transparent.

However, on my laptop (also running Ubuntu 20.04) even this is transparent. So I'm trying to "fix" my desktop as I prefer the transparent look.

From what I can tell these are indicator apps like:

• indicator-application-service
• indicator-bluetooth-service
• indicator-session-service
• indicator-sound-service

It seems the indicator-application-service is the wrapper for the opaque part (indicator-session-service and indicator-sound-service are contained therein). So one question I have is why does indictor-application-service pay attention to the transparent background I set for the whole gnome-panel on one system but not my laptop?

Additionally, it would seem there should be some way of configuring what indicator apps run and which do not. For example, I don't want nor need the bluetooth-service on my desktop - it's so old that I don't think it even has support for bluetooth! Plus I've found and killed some of these indicator apps for print notification and the like - things I just don't use. But how would I configure these indicator apps to say "X, Y and Z run here but not A, B nor C" at startup?

An old login password (twice since replaced) still seems to be the Gnome2 Key Storage password. Upon changing my (sole admin/user) login password (using System Settings GUI) I expected Ubuntu to update this password in the same way that it seems to try to change the LUKS password. Perhaps that expectation is an error.

As recent login password changes haven't been flawless (I posted a separate question about that here) I wonder:

• if these passwords should be harmonised by Ubuntu during login password change
• how I change the Gnome2 Key Storage password manually.

That is two questions, I know, but they're linked to resolving the same issue of harmonised passwords forking which is dangerous for less knowledgable users.

Is it possible to completely purge anything Gnome3 and completely revert to gnome 2 with the panel and stuff. I do not want to get suggestions on how to get to the classic session, I want to know how to uninstall the GTK3 stack from 11.10 and replace it with GTK2

I know Gnome is no longer maitaining Gnome2/GTK2 so, I know the concerns.. backward incompatability e.t.c

If I understood it correctly the plan is to remove the notification area from the gnome2 applet, blocking notifications from all apps except java and wine. How will this affect other applications (e.g. skype) which depend on the notification area interface ?
