I need to run a simple batch of commands after the computer boots, something like

sudo thing
sudo thing1 -p

But for the life of me I can't figure out how. I googled and googled and I kept finding the same thing: Place the commands into a /etc/rc.local or /etc/init.d/rc.local file. The problem is that none of those files exist on my system! Furthermore, I have read that /etc/rc.local is deprecated anyway, so what the correct and simple way to do this?

I would like to know how to these two things:

  • run a command after the computer boots

  • run a command after specified user logs in, and run it as the given user

    (And make all that happen solely by editing stuff in the terminal, no GUI tools)

In the Linux / Unix administration handbook it mentions that you can edit the /etc/inittab file to change the run level. I don't have that file on 10.04. I Googled this and found a tip saying that file had been replaced with /etc/event.d/rc-default - however I don't have that file on my system either.

Have these been deleted or does 10.04 deal with run levels differently?

I'm on Ubuntu 10.10, and I've just joined the Linux world coming from OS X. I'm learning about runlevels and the rc directory in /etc/, and everywhere (manuals, tutorials, etc) I'm reading about inittab. But I can't find it in my Ubuntu installation. Why? Does Ubuntu follow the runlevel model? How are rc and levels loaded without inittab?
