Sensord is a daemon that can be used to periodically log sensor readings from hardware health-monitoring chips to syslog(3) or a round-robin database (RRD) and to alert when a sensor alarm is signalled; for example, if a fan fails, a temperature limit is exceeded, etc.

sensord does not seem to be available since Ubuntu 18.04. Given that it's quite useful to periodically log sensor info to syslog for crash diagnosis etc., is there a new equivalent of sensord available on Ubuntu 18.04 and later?

I installed Ubuntu 19.10 on my new Lenovo 14w laptop and I noticed that the fans are not running at all, causing high temps.

I have installed fancontrol but couldn't figure out the config.

Running pwmconfig results in an error There are no pwm-capable sensor modules installed

And lastly, sensors-detect shows I have AMD Family 15h thermal sensors (driver 'k10temp')

Some posts seem to mention that some Lenovo models have their fans controlled by the UEFI BIOS, however there aren't any such options in my BIOS.

What can I do to get the fan spinning?

I have a ASUS TP301UJ laptop with dual-boot and my fan is quite loud all the time. I am trying to configure my fan speed in Ubuntu (I did it easily in Windows 10), but I am having problems.

Here is what I did:

1. I installed lm-sensors, psensor and fancontrol. psensor worked well, and read the fan speed and all temperatures.

2. Ran sudo sensors-detect which only said that I needed to add coretemp to /etc/modules. coretemp was already in modules so I did not do anything.

3. Rebooted. Ran sudo pwmconfig and it output:

   Found the following devices:
   hwmon0 is acpitz
   hwmon1 is coretemp
   hwmon2 is asus

   Found the following PWM controls:
   hwmon2/pwm1 current value: 0

   hwmon2/pwm1 is currently setup for automatic speed control.
   In general, automatic mode is preferred over manual mode, as it is more efficient and it reacts faster. Are you sure that you want to setup this output for manual control? (n)

4. Entered "y" and the output was:

   Giving the fans some time to reach full speed...

   Found the following fan sensors:
   hwmon2/fan1_input current speed: 0 ... skipping!
   There are no working fan sensors, all readings are 0.

   Make sure you have a 3-wire fan connected.
   You may also need to increase the fan divisors.
   See doc/fan-divisors for more information.

So my fan enters "manual mode" and starts running at full speed but pwmconfig exits, leaving my fan running at full speed. Changing the number in /sys/class/hwmon/hwmon2/pwm1_enable from 1 back to 2, makes it automatic again.

Here is my problem (I think): When my fan is in "manual mode", sensors shows -1 as its speed. It is not detected! But in automatic mode, there is no problem at all. This makes it impossible for me to configure the fan with pwmconfig.

I have already tried adding acpi_enforce_resources=lax to the variable GRUB_CMDLINE_LINUX_DEFAULT in the grub file. The result is the same.

What should I do?

On my ThinkPad T470 which is a dual boot with Ubuntu 18.04 and Windows 10, everything was working fine in Ubuntu until after a while I needed to boot Windows. Since then, the fan on the laptop runs constantly at full speed on Ubuntu.

I have tried the common solutions such as setting acpi_osi=!Windows 2012 in the grub setting according to this answer or setting fan speed using thinkfan according to this answer.

I have also checked my BIOS setting, but every thing looks normal as some options are set for performance and some set to be balanced between performance, energy consumption, and fan noise. The problem is Ubuntu seems to not recognize the BIOS settings or any other settings for that matter.

None of the solutions above made any difference in the fan noise.

Any help would be appreciated.

EDIT: I am suspicious about ACPI not doing its job for some reason.

EDIT 2: One observation that may be worth mentioning is that the fan runs at normal/low speed when I boot the laptop and the grub menu prompts me to choose an operating system (Ubuntu or Windows) to continue with. Then the fan takes off to full speed as I choose Ubuntu. I think this means that BIOS settings work fine.

EDIT 3: Trying to use fancontrol according to this answer, after running sudo pwmconfig, I get the following message:

hwmon3/pwm1_enable stuck to 2
Manual control mode not supported, skipping hwmon3/pwm1.
There are no usable PWM outputs.

I have MSI MPG X570 GAMING EDGE WIFI motherboard ( ), holding AMD Ryzen 3600X Processor.

I tried original kernel 4.15 on ubuntu 18.04 Bionic, and sensors-detect could not detect any sensors.

I also tried 5.1 kernel ("Linux 5.1.0-050100-generic") and updated lm-sensor could not detect any sensors on the MB or CPU.

What am I doing wrong? I need to be able to access the CPU temperature. Is there anyway else I could achieve the same?
