I am trying to make use of OGMrip, a dvd encoder. I get an error every time that states I need to install MEncoder. How do I go about doing that?
I have tried updating and this does not resolve the issue. Do I need to manually download something from the terminal? Also this program is dependent on ogmtools mplayer mkvtoolnix oggenc lame and faac.
I am not sure if I have these packages. How can I tell?

I tried these commands:
mencoder old.mp4 -oac lavc -ovc x264 vcodec=mpeg4 -vf flip,mirror -o new.mp4
mencoder old.mp4 -oac lavc -ovc x264 vcodec=mpeg4 -vf rotate=2 -o new.mp4
ffmpeg -i old.mp4 -vf "hflip" -strict -2 new.mp4
but the converted video is still upside down.
Running the video with
mplayer -vf flip,mirror old.mp4
renders it as desired. But anyway, I'd like to convert it.
I'm using
ffmpeg version 2.8.15-0ubuntu0.16.04.1 and
MEncoder 1.2.1 (Debian), built with gcc-5.3.1
I'm looking for a good audio-video encoder which can utilize all cores of a multi-core CPU.
I've tried mencoder, but I can't see a "multi-core" option, and it appears to be using only one core at any given moment.
If mencoder cannot utilize multiple cores, is there another program which can?
It doesnt' bother me whether it is a GUI or CLI...
Linux sound is generally very confusing to me, especially when two different machines running the same version of Ubuntu don't behave at all the same way.
I'm trying to use mencoder to record a video stream to an AVI file. From one of my laptops (an HP dv7) it works exactly as some random Ubuntu wiki post says it should with this command:
mencoder tv:// -tv driver=v4l2:width=640:height=480:device=/dev/video0:forceaudio:adevice=/dev/dsp1 -ovc lavc -oac mp3lame -lameopts cbr:br=64:mode=3 -o webcam.avi
On another laptop (a Lenovo Ideapad U460), that fails because there's no /dev/dsp1. There's no /dev/dsp or /dev/audio anything. There is a /dev/snd directory with various cryptically-named files in it, but I have no idea which is which.
The webcam on the lenovo does work; I've tried it with Cheese. I would however like to at least understand why the systems would be different. (I have not done a side-by-side installed package comparison, I confess.)
Any suggestions on packages to install or diagnostics to perform are welcome. Thanks.
Is there a way to encode/decode prores mov files (mostly decode)? I've been playing around with ffmpeg and mencoder/mplayer from the ubuntu repos, but they both report that it's an unknown codec. Totem as well.
I guess it comes down to getting the right codecs in place. Maybe compiling from source?
I have seen a few comments on the internet about getting mplayer/mencoder working with prores files in OS X, but I'm hoping there is a way to do this in Ubuntu.
