As you can see i have tried setting everything, but it's still not working.

Ubuntu 20.04 LTS

Some scripts I wrote show notifications like "Volume up" or "Reset brightness" for example, using notify-send. However, the notifications get saved in the notification menu on Ubuntu 18.04, which I don't want since there are so many repeats. How do I prevent that?

Here's what I tried:

• Checked man notify-send but didn't see any options about not saving the notification.
• notify-send --urgency=low - no difference
• Researched "gnome toast notifications" but apparently they're application-specific, which doesn't work for me
• Considered using Zenity but I couldn't find a way to make a notification that doesn't steal focus.
• In Python, making a Notify.notification object .show() twice - no difference

With the command notify-send, it's possible to show a notification on screen for a small amount of time. But I'd like to have a specific notification on my screen for an undetermined amount of time. I'm creating a script that is initiated and terminated by the user, for me it'd be useful to have a command that activates the notification and then deactivates it after my script is finished. The pseudocode would be something like this:

#!/bin/bash

activatenotification "my text"

# my script commands

deactivatenotification

Is it possible to do? Is there such a command line tool or can I do something like that using notify-send?

I am trying to get the following shortcut to work:

notify-send -i rhythmbox "RhythmBox Is Playing" "$(rhythmbox-client --print-playing)"

It works fine If I run it from the command line, but when I set it as a keyboard shortcut I just get the text printed out and the program (rhythmbox-client) doesn't run.

What am I doing wrong?

In notify-send I know that -i can be used to add a stock image to the notification, but how can I add my own custom image? I have gone into usr/share/icons/gnome/32x32 where notify-send pulls from, but it won't show any image at all. Is it possible to include an image other than the stock images?
