Questions[nvidia-geforce](ubuntu)

After updating from Ubuntu 22.04 to 24.04. (on Wayland) I am unable to open Settings, Nautilus file explorer, etc. When trying to open Nautilus from the Terminal, I get the error libEGL warning: egl: failed to create dri2 screen. I am using the Nvidia driver 535. When installing the driver 550 (or 545 as well), it is instantly possible to open Nautilus, etc., without any errors. But when I then reboot, the graphics driver isn't loading correctly, and I only get a low resolution, and I'm unable to use external screens on my notebook. Does anyone know a solution to that?

Addition: When switching from Wayland to x11 everything works.

I've been trying to install nvidia-cuda-toolkit with sudo apt install nvidia-cuda-toolkit and it displays the following error:

I also tried following this Medium article.

Got proprietary Nvidia drivers installed by Ubuntu itself, graphic card is recognized well by the system yet brightness control does not work when adjusted by either FN + F5/6 shortcut or by dragging brightness slider manually (keyboard shortcut triggers slider move as well, so it's heard by the system).

However: xrandr | grep " connected" | cut -f1 -d " " produces single output DP-2 and xrandr --output DP-2 --brightness 0.7 does change the brightness.

Googled a lot, tried various options, neither works to me. What can I do to make it work when dragging the slider as well?

(I'm aware there are several questions with a similar title but they either don't have answers, are very old or don't apply to my situation.)

I'm using Ubuntu 18.04.2, my GPU is a GeForce 840M and the driver version is nvidia-driver-430 (installed from the Softwares and updates panel)

So I can't seem to use the nvidia gpu anymore. I have no idea what caused this.

sudo nvidia-settings

gives the following output:

ERROR: NVIDIA driver is not loaded ERROR: Unable to load info from any available system

It does open an Nvidia panel but without the usual settings and just the two PRIME profiles (Nvidia performance mode and intel power saving mode ).

sudo nvidia-smi

gives the following error :

NVIDIA-SMI has failed because it couldn't communicate with the NVIDIA driver. Make sure that the latest NVIDIA driver is installed and running.

I've tried a few things like purging and reinstalling the driver or using an older one , with no luck. I've also tried downloading and running the .run driver from the nvidia website but it failed to install.

I'm looking for advice on what to try next to have it working again. Thanks for your help :)

Recently I bought a new laptop that came with Windows 10 installed but not activated. I use both Windows 10 and Ubuntu 18.04, so I tried making a dual boot with a USB flash drive. It was recognized by the BIOS, I tried Try Ubuntu without installing and Install Ubuntu. With both options the PC freezes, and I need to press the power button. It's shown very fast some errors that are listed below:

I'm using NVIDIA GTX 1050 Ti graphics card and Intel i7-8750H processor. I talked to the customer support and they just said that my laptop might not be compatible with Ubuntu. I also tried Ubuntu 16.04, but there were no changes.

EDIT: Thanks a lot for all the answers, but unfortunatelly I returned the PC to the store, neither the technical support found a solution for the problem, they just said: "Our PCs are just able to work with Windows, anyother OS might work but without our warranty".
