Questions[segmentation-fault](ubuntu)

My VLC player crashes every time I'm trying to open any video file. Removing/purging vlc, and reinstalling it does not change anything.

I recently upgraded my distro to 20.04 from 19.10. I never had this problem on any other operating system before. I also tried to reinstall the whole operating system from scratch (because I also had some other minor issues). Then VLC worked fine on a fresh installation, but at some point it started to crash again, and now again it always crashes.

Running vlc from terminal gives the following output when I try opening a file.

Once or twice a day Ubuntu 20.04 suddenly freezes.

• No network (can't ssh into it anymore)
• graphics remain frozen
• no usb (so no keyboard, no mouse)
• no bluetooth (no mouse)

Audio repeats 0,5 seconds for about 20 times then it's silent

NO indication in syslog whatsoever

One indication in kern.log a few seconds prior to freezing

At other times it was Discord or VNC or any other video-related application.

Tried to switch from NVidea driver to Nouveau - can't get it to work on 4K screen. Renmains 640x480.

Hardware:

• Intel i7 8700
• GeForce GTX 1060 6GB/PCIe/SSE2
• 32 G RAM

Xsensors reports temperatures in the low 30s (centigrade), so that should not be an issue.

Any ideas or additional information required?

Remove gnome-control-center with dependencies and install it again...
Nothing changed...

In Ubuntu I have faced the segmentation fault error many times. What is a segmentation fault and when does it occur?

I am attempting to debug a SIGSEGV on PHP on my Ubuntu 9.10.

I've installed php5-dbg to have the debug symbols available, however, when I start gdb, it shows the following output:

Any ideas are welcome.
