Questions[sshfs](ubuntu)

I needed to locally edit remote files on my server, so I tried to mount the whole remote file system (/) on my local system with SSHFS like so:

 $ sshfs [email protected]:// /mnt -p 22

Then it stuck (cursor blinking, no output), so obviously I cancelled it with Ctrl+C.

After that, the mount point folder /mnt became sort of unusable, unreachable (you name it) and kept returning me this error message on any attempt to access it:

fuse: bad mount point `/mnt': Transport endpoint is not connected

And it took this weird look in its parent folder:

$ ls -l /
...
d?????????   ? ?    ?        ?            ? mnt`
...

How can I resolve the error and get back to normal?

What should I do to be able to use SSHFS?

I had originally asked this as a follow-up question here. Unfortunately, there haven't been any replies so I am posting it as its own question.

According to the documentation, you are supposed to be able to use ssh options with sshfs. How do you do this? I have tried something like -o User=joe but then fuse gives me an error saying that "User" is not a recognized option.

Also, help with this question would also be appreciated.

I am specifically referring to the following from the manpage for sshfs.

SSHFS options:

  -p PORT
         equivalent to '-o port=PORT'

  -C     equivalent to '-o compression=yes'

  ⋮

  -o password_stdin
         read password from stdin (only for pam_mount!)

  -o SSHOPT=VAL
         ssh options (see man ssh_config)

I am trying to specify the remote username separate from the host (in other words, not user@host:dir). The reason is that particular format is not friendly with some institutionally assigned usernames. For example, if the institution assigns the user name [email protected], programs such as sshfs and curlftpfs will not correctly interpret [email protected]@host:dir. Instead, they will try to login as First.Last to the host institution.edu@host.

Could you explain a bit more about idmap? I am not literate enough to understand what the manpage is saying.

If I use idmap, I am going to have to create hardcoded files. I was hoping to avoid that so that the user can just use a single command without needing to know how it works in the background. Eventually, other people might be using it even after I leave. Even so, the documentation says the file format is username:uid. Which is the local and which is remote?

So I am trying to mount a folder from another computer in my LAN, and I am able to ssh without any issues. But, I am unable to make any changes when I access the mounted folder.

This is what I have done so far:

Install:

$sudo apt-get install sshfs
$sudo modprobe fuse
$sudo adduser <username> fuse
$sudo chown root:fuse /dev/fuse
$sudo chmod +x /dev/fuse
$mkdir ~/remoteserv

And when I access the remote folder via sshfs:

$sshfs -o idmap=user <username>@<ipaddress>:/home/user ~/remoteserv

The output of becomes:

$~/remoteserv$ ls -l
total 60
drwxr-xr-x 1 <notmyusername> <notmyusername> 4096 2012-04-13 21:54 Desktop

I am unable to access any of the files properly because sshfs is mounting the files under my wife's username! I have no idea why, and I feel like I have made a large mistake somewhere. Is there some configuration file which I need to tweak somewhere? I can't seem to find anything on the manpage :/

I even tried an -o allow_other option when I mounted, but it still mounted it under my wife's username! What is going on?

I am using the following command to mount a ssh ubuntu directory to my ubuntu pc.

sshfs [email protected]:/dir/dir /home/username/mount/xxx

My question is, can I create a script for this in my desktop where I can make a double click and run this script when ever I need to mount the drive without manually typing the command always.

Is there a GUI utility to mount remote filesystems over SSH (SSHFS)?
