The application I am talking about is Worms Armageddon (WA). I'm running it under wine.

Consider the following sequence:

  • switch Ubuntu GUI language to Russian (and restart session)
  • switch Ubuntu keyboard layout to Russian
  • run WA under wine
  • type something Cyrillic in WA chat

-- When I do so, I have no problems with encoding. But if I switch Ubuntu GUI language back to English (and restart session), then when typing Cyrillic characters in chat (using Russian keyboard layout), I get question marks (????, ? ?????!..) in chat instead of Cyrillic).

I guess it is somehow related to Windows code page. In Russian, the default code page is cp1251, and in English is probably some other European code page.

So my question is: how do I type and read Cyrillic in WA chat without switching GUI language to Russian?

P.S. The initial desktop icon is:

I switched to Russian keyboard via loadkeys ru command and now cannot switch back.

A directory and subsequent files I have are titled in Cyrillic characters and I am trying to get to them by a combination of commands in Latin characters and Cyrillic ones. So far I've been stuck on Cyrillic.

Does anyone know how to switch back if I have only Cyrillic characters available?

Also what's wrong with the hex characters (\xbb and \xab). My system is Kubuntu 14.04, trusty:

Somehow I stumbled upon what may be some relevant information (see more at http://pastebin.com/4XGakzgL):

UPDATE: I tried various locale repair tools: a popup appeared saying I have incomplete language support and offered to help. That was nice, but it achieved nothing. Well, at least now, the messages in German are displayed correctly in UTF and forcing English does work:
