Not sure what happened. Yesterday everything worked, today I booted up my VMware and it seems Ubuntu doesn't have an internet connection at all.

Tried all the different options (besides NAT that I normally use) like Bridged and Host-Only but it didn't help. Tried restarting my network via terminal etc. Under Ubuntu's internet settings it just shows that no Wi-Fi adapter is found.

Not sure what happened overnight, maybe some update that got installed? I did accidentally turn off the host computer before I could correctly shut down Ubuntu's VMware session but I doubt that did anything. Windows 7 that is also running on VMware on the other hand works perfectly.

How to proceed? Thanks!

Background

I have Xenial Xerus installed on a Mid-2014 Macbook Pro OSX High Sierra host, running in a VMWare Fusion 10 instance.

On Fusion 7, I had no issues with Ubuntu on VMWare. However, since I also virtualize my Bootcamp partition for convenience... I was forced to update to 10 since 7 no longer supports loading Bootcamp on the latest OSX.

VM specs

3 Cores, 4GB ram, 20GB HDD (10GB free), Hardware version 14. 768MB VRam

Issue

I just cannot ever restart or shut down the VM. If I restart or shut down Ubuntu, on the next reboot, I get the message: "Sata device 0:1 could not be connected, always try to connect when starting this VM?". Then, Ubuntu starts in low graphics mode, and I am forced to restore a snapshot of my VM when it was working. This is workable, with proper snapshotting and backing up I have been passably using Ubuntu. However, I have had to go into the console in low graphics mode after a crash and back up my work, restore snapshot, and restore my work many, many times. Conceivably if I ever start leaking memory and need to reboot, I'll need to re-image the VM again.

What I've Tried

• Different allocations of ram, cores.

• Reinstalling x-desktop

• Reinstalling/updating Nvidia drivers (this broke the hell out of the VM when I tried)

• Reinstalling VMWare tools

• Reinstalling Ubuntu.

• Installing all manner of different desktop environments

• Pretty much everything in the answers to this question

I have a Mac OS X and VMware Fusion. I did a fresh install of 12.04. I do not have VMware Tools installed.

I read that I do not have to log in at the command window, that I have to wait for VMware Tools to get installed. It seems like something is wrong.

I am using a Mac with an Apple Wireless Keyboard - French.

I have installed Ubuntu as virtual machine by VMware Fusion. The keyboard setting of Ubuntu is as follows:

And the preview is not exactly as Apple Wireless Keyboard - French:

In Mac, we can type \ and [ by:

• \ = Option ⌥ + Shift ⇧ + :
• [ = Option ⌥ + Shift ⇧ + 5

However, it doesn't work under Ubuntu. Could anyone tell me how to type \ and [ under Ubuntu? Also, is there a keyboard other than French, that I currently set, which fits better my Mac keyboard?

I have installed VMware Fusion 4.1.2 in my MacBook Pro, and installed Ubuntu 11.10 as a virtual machine.

I have tried to enable the 3d acceleration, via Virtual Machine -> Settings -> Display of the menu, we have the following setting:

The note does not mention whether it works for Ubuntu... To do a test, I choose Ubuntu instead of Ubuntu 2D when I log in, but it still looks like 2D, and echo $DESKTOP_SESSION gives ubuntu-2d.

Do you confirm that today VMware Fusion 4.1.2 is not able to enable 3D for Ubuntu?
