I've been using Ubuntu for more than a year now. Mostly for school assignments, and I don't use dual-boot. So I guess I quite enjoy it and I don't think I'd ever go back to my old OS.
This is about internal errors, I genuinely want to know if there's anyway I can troubleshoot this. I can say, I always get "internal error report" whenever I turn my machine on and I'd always report them, at least when I have internet connection but again I'm not blessed with 24/7 internet connection. But when I do, I always report them and check for any update as well. Just today I got this :

The left one, apparently my Java installation is causing crash, and in the error it's also written :

Unreportable reason
This package does not seem to be installed correctly

So I tried to fix my installation by running :

sudo apt install default-jre

And it says it's already the newest version, I don't know where to go from there. Error on the right one, I don't know what it's about. I tried to looked for this issue and I came across these 2 questions :
1. Where do “internal error” error reports go?
2. How can I track a bug that caused a crash and was reported via apport / whoopsie?

But both are about error reporting (Ubuntu Error Tracking), not troubleshooting. So, I went to check my error reports and I got this :

So yes, my errors were submitted but I still encounter internal errors when I start my machine. Meanwhile waiting for any software update, is there anything we can do to troubleshoot this ourselves ? Because clearly even with update I still get these errors. Guess the updates are general ? Not specific for some reported error ? Some enlightenment or suggestion would be appreciated. Thanks !

When application crashes the Linux kernel sends the core dump to apport which then provides it to whoopsie. Would these servcies in stable distribution send crash reports (including core dumps) to Canonical for analysis?

As per my understanding apport doesn't send it by default (only for failures of type Bug / Package). It is still not clear regarding whoopsie behavior. According to wiki pages it seems that whoopsie would always ask user confirmation to send report. Does it do it regardless of failure type?

Given that an IOT device running Ubuntu 16.04, I would like to restrict network or internet consumption. Thus, I am looking for two things here.

  1. Identify (& Stop) all ubuntu services causing internet connectivity.(List) I have identified some endpoints that ubuntu tries to connect here.

    a. Whoopsie (Crash reporting)

    b. Changelogs.ubuntu.com (MOTD?)

    c. ubuntu updates

    I would like to know any more such endpoint/services, mostly interested in disabling all of these Ubuntu specific network activity. Please help me Identify such services to be added to the list of services to be disabled.

  2. Enable network connectivity for these services only when connected to network which is set as non-metered. ( I am facing issue setting my current modem connection as metered for which I will use separate thread)

NOTE:

  1. At this time, my application shall use network. I am just trying to curb all other applications shipped by default from Ubuntu which tries to access internet.

  2. Also, I am trying to disable these services and not ufw because, given this is IOT device I would like to stop applications from running than ufw restricting the access.

On one of my machines I have a process running called "whoopsie". I'm running 12.04 server and never specifically installed anything with this name.

Google seems to imply that it has something to with error logs but I'm not finding too much information. The fact that I didn't manually install it and the 3 other servers I checked did in fact have no such running process OR executable made me a bit confused.

Does anyone know what the "whoopsie" process is?

Does anyone know what packages might have installed it? The server is quite plain, it has a LAMP stack, Samba and print servers and the Nagios NRPE plugin, nothing more installed, just standing there being a nice backup-server.
