• OS: Ubuntu 18.04 LTS
• DE: Gnome 3.28.1

I switch from Unity to Gnome with new LTS Ubuntu.

In "old-new" GUI, i found that by default we don't have horizontal workspaces, and must move between workspaces only in vertical order.

I fixed it with gnome-shell-extension "Workspace Grid". Changed necessary shortcuts to switch workspace (view).

But in Gnome-keyboard settings no shortcuts for move Application's Window (not view) left/right workspace (not monitor).

How can I change this?

As workaround solution I guess only using shortcuts to move window to concrete workspace.

In Settings > Devices > Keyboard > Navigation section

I don't have necessary shortcuts preferences

It often happens to me, that an application pops up a question and I wonder to which exact application this window belongs, because if I look in the Launcher there is no application that currently has focus (no white triangle on the right side of the icon when I focus the message window)

Is there a way to find out the belonging of an open window?

I'm running 12.04 inside VMWare Workstation.

Windows 7 provides a very useful feature: use Windows+Left or Windows+Right to align the current window on the left/right half of the screen (useful for terminal windows on wide-screen, etc).

Is there an equivalent available for Ubuntu?

So far I was able to emulate Windows+Up (maximize window), but can't find anything for left/right alignments.

Just to be clear: I am not talking about "Move to Workspace" or so, I'm talking about resizing the current window on the current screen/workspace to only take the left/right half of the screen.

There are lots of posts on this about Unity, this is about GNOME shell.

As with other posters, I use apps (Inkscape in particular) that uses Alt-Click and Alt-drag. GNOME shell is grabbing this off me and thus disabling features in the application.

I have tried

• using ccsm's Move plugin - you can turn this off and you still get Alt-drag window moving.

• using gconf editor to change /apps/metacity/general/mouse_button_modifier - this has no effect AFAICS.

It's really hindering me. Otherwise I find GNOME shell a really productive environment.

I know about the show desktop keybind (default Ctrl+Alt+D), which I use often enough. However, I'm looking for a way to minimize all windows without activating "show desktop".

I'm on a default install (i.e Gnome, Metacity & Compiz). I've looked through all the locations to configure keybinds, that I know. I've also looked at the default keybind list in the Ubuntu wiki and in the Compiz wiki. (Not to mention, searching here.)

I'm interested in knowing where it is available, if not in Gnome/Metacity/Compiz, or some other way to accomplish this with a keybind.
