On both my laptop and desktop installs of 24.04.01 I have dark mode enabled in settings as my default display. However, on both, it takes a few minutes after boot up before dark mode is applied to system applications such as Files (Nautilus), System Monitor, etc. They appear in light mode and I have to shut them and reopen them after 4-5 minutes to get them in dark mode.

Does anyone else have this issue? And can you fix it?

The desktop is running an old Acer Nitro N50-100 with an NVIDIA GTX 1050 Ti on driver version 535.

I'm not near my laptop but it's a Lenovo Yoga 9i with an RTX card in it.

I'm trying to use a .ovpn file on the built-in VPN settings in Ubuntu 23.10

I go to the setting menu --> Network --> '+' button next to VPN

I click "Import from file..." and navigate to my .ovpn file.

It seems to work but never connects. On a Windows VM on the same machine, I use the OpenVPN client and the SAME file and it works just fine, so it's not the file configuration.

Do I need to do anything in the Advanced settings to get it to work? The other ovpn posts on here seem old and don't relate to modern versions of Ubuntu. I have also tried using the CLI command nmcli connection import type openvpn file <.opvn file> which again imports it correctly but doesn't connect (same behaviour as the GUI).

In syslog, I get nm-openvpn[22624]: read UDPv4 [EHOSTUNREACH]: No route to host (fd=5,code=113) but as I said, It works from the same machine on my VM.

UFW is not enabled so the port is open.

Update:

I switched to port 1193 to try and using nc, I can see that 1193 is listening:

Ubuntu 22.04

I'm trying to use crontab to launch Transmission at 22:04 and kill it at 07:00. To launch it at 22:04, I use:

04 22 * * * env DISPLAY=:0.0 transmission-gtk

But I get the error:

(transmission-gtk:21925): Gtk-WARNING **: 22:04:01.301: cannot open display: :0.0

I've also tried:

04 22 * * * DISPLAY=:0 transmission-gtk

but I get the same error (without the last .0)

How can I launch Transmission-gtk from crontab? I want to do this as I've noticed that Transmission uses network resources even when in the alternate speed-limit mode. I realise I could use something else like qbittorrent, but there must be a way of launching Transmission at certain times? Gnome-scheduler no longer seems to be in the Ubuntu repositories.

The question here hasn't received an answer to the problem.

Whenever I try to launch a system file to edit it using sudo gnome-text-editor, I get the error

(gnome-text-editor:64141): GLib-GIO-CRITICAL **: 17:47:31.731: g_dbus_connection_emit_signal: assertion 'object_path != NULL && g_variant_is_object_path (object_path)' failed

This occurs multiple times for each attempt at opening a file. Why is this?

I am unable to connect to my box via Apache or ssh since upgrading to Ubunutu 20.10 beta. Both show as running, but no service:

I am using this box to write this question, so it definitely is able to connect to the internet, etc.

I have lost my network connections (Ethernet, WiFi and Bluetooth) on Ubuntu 20.04. I don't know what I did to lose them, but after a reboot, they had gone. There is no network icon in the system tray and in settings, there is no setting for WiFi and no connections in the network submenu.

I can boot from a Live USB image and everything works well.

So, from another answer I found, I backed up, then copied the netplanner, and NetworkManager files and directories from the Live USB to my computer. Rebooted into the "normal" Ubuntu environment and still nothing.

I ran sudo lshw -C networkand the output is:

Using sudo nmcli gives:

Use "nmcli device show" to get complete information about known devices and
"nmcli connection show" to get an overview on active connection profiles.

I don't have ifconfig (net-tools) installed.

Running nm-applet brings up a greyed out system tray icon, but when I click that, the window that opens (showing the connections) is empty.

Any help is greatly appreciated.

Update 20200724: I can log into old kernels 5.4.0-41 and 5.4.0-40 and everything works fine. But 5.4.0-42 is borked.

I note how the naming convention has changed at 5.4.0-42:
