When I press the upgrade button, the software updater window simply disappears.

Also, I've also tried

sudo do-release-upgrade

However, I get the following message:

I've done a backup from the backups app in Ubuntu 20.04 LTS.

Now, I want to restore those files in a different laptop, with Ubuntu 22.04 LTS.

• If I try to use the graphical way, I get the warning that Backups does not have permission to restore some files...

I can't find it now, but I remember reading an answer on this forum about a way to restore files from the terminal, when this happened.

• I've also tried sudo duplicity restore file://<path_to_backup> /~, however, I get destination directory already exists. Will not overwrite.

I've just bought an Acer Nitro 5 AN515-57-76WE laptop (with no OS), and its hard drive came with some partitions. However, when I installed Ubuntu, I chose the erase disk, and install option. Later on, I read on a link (I can't find it anymore), that I should have not formated the UEFI partition... No, I'm afraid I have done something really bad.

When I start the laptop, I get several error messages, then the main screen with the Acer's logo, and Ubuntu's just below.

Every now and then, when I'm working on Ubuntu, the laptop halts (at least graphically) for a few seconds...

Was this my doing? What problems may I get in the future with the laptop, without an UEFI?

I'm trying to read some pdfs in Ubuntu with Document Viewer(DV), however to customize the colour, thickness, etc. it's really bothersome, since whatever (few) choices we have in DV, we must customize it case by case, not for the whole document. Also, I'm looking for something that allows a dark mode, just like DV does.

What apps are there for Ubuntu? I'm using Ubuntu 20.04.4 LTS.

I've answered yes to sudo dpkg-reconfigure wireshark-common, and done the following:

sudo usermod -a -G wireshark my_username

groups my_username confirms that I'm in the group.

sudo chgrp wireshark /usr/bin/dumpcap

sudo chmod 770 /usr/bin/dumpcap

Runing ls -l for that file gives

-rwxrwx--- 1 root wireshark 113112 abr 19  2020 /usr/bin/dumpcap

and finally

sudo setcap cap_net_raw,cap_net_admin=eip /usr/bin/dumpcap

However, only when I change the dumpcap file permissions to be executed by any user, do I manage to start capturing packets.

Why is this?

I'm fairly new to Ubuntu, and I'm learning out of curiosity about it.

The book I'm reading was talking about journactl command, and I decided to check the listing for a particular boot. To my surprise, I discovered this warning:

In th site, they advised to check the relevant sysfys file:

/sys/devices/system/cpu/vulnerabilities/mds

I've tried with my user, and it outputted permission denied, then I ran sudo -i, inserted the password, the thing $ transformed into #. So, right now, I assume I have root privileges. However, when I run # /sys/devices/system/cpu/vulnerabilities/mds, I get permission denied

If I run ls on that file, I get:

-r--r--r-- 1 root root 4096 abr 10 21:46 /sys/devices/system/cpu/vulnerabilities/mds

So, supposedly, any user should be able to read it...

I'm new to Ubuntu.

I've read (I think) that man pages had all the information one would want... However, more often than not, I find commands whose man pages are left wanting.

Two examples:

• Command ls man page. If we read the -F option, then either we're already proficient, or we have no idea what's happening here. I had to look it up in the info-page.
• Command read. I've seen a script using read -p "string". Neither the man or info page seem to have any information on this.

I'm unsure whether I'm the one at fault for not being able to understand the information on these pages, or if there's really no useful info (for this context).

Any tips that help me improve my understanding skills of man pages are welcome.

I have a LeNovo ideapad 330S.

Every time some program demands a bit more CPU usage, the fan goes wild.

In windows, I would go to the power saving options, and then I would decrease the percentage of maximum CPU usage to 70%, and the problem with the fan would be no more...

However, I'm not sure how to proceed in an analogous way in Ubuntu. I'm using the following:

Description: Ubuntu 20.04.4 LTS Release: 20.04 Codename: focal

In this OS, is there a way to limit the cpu usage? I'm not a tech savy person, so I have a preference for a visually friendly and simpler method.
