Very strange window behaviour. Brand new install of latest 24.04 LTS. Defaults for everything. GNOME desktop (Wayland? I'm never sure. Like I said, default.) Mysqlworkbench installed via snap install mysql-workbench-community, Version 8.0.36.

When I open mysqlworkbench the window opens fine, filling maybe a third of my desktop. I can use mouse-drag to move the window. But I cannot mouse-click-drag to alter the window size at all. Moving the mouse over the edges or corners does not cause the mouse cursor to change to "drag handles". All other applications work fine. It used to work fine for me under 22.04. A friend who has 24.04 says it does work normally for him. I can right-click in wb's "task bar at top", pick the "Resize" menu option: then it makes the mouse cursor be drag handles at top left and I can resize. As soon as finished resizing reverts to "mouse cannot drag to resize". As I say, every application other than mysqlworkbench works fine.

I have Googled and not found any matches. Any ideas?!

Up to Ubuntu 18.04, using default GNOME/Nautilius desktop, when I inserted a (data file) USB stick it would automount and put a USB icon onto the desktop. I find this very useful, especially for quick eject via context menu.

Now at 19.04, on USB insertion I do see a "banner" appear for a few seconds, but I no longer get any desktop icon . I run under VirtualBox on Windows, but that has not changed and I do not think is at issue. Ubuntu does still automount the stick at /media/<username>.

I found https://help.ubuntu.com/community/Mount/USB. I checked in dconf-editor and both keys, including org.gnome.desktop.media-handling.automount-open, are set.

Ubuntu 18.04. I am the sole user on a (VM) system, running the desktop.

When I started out with only the GNOME desktop installed as per default I got logged straight onto the desktop without any password. This was also the case in prior versions of Ubuntu with Unity. This is what I want.

A while ago I installed the Unity supplied with with 18.04 as an alternative if I want to play with it. From that moment on I now get prompted for my password when I logon:

At the password prompt if instead I click on the "icon" it shows a choice of desktops. Maybe that's why it wants to stop at a password prompt, so that I could choose:

(I don't really know why it shows Unity (Default) --- so far as I am aware(!), it still goes into GNOME.)

When I get to GNOME my desktop's Users settings still shows Automatic Logon is ON:

I would like simply to have it revert to going straight into GNOME without prompt/password like it used to. Can I achieve that, without uninstalling Unity?

EDIT: Is there a file somewhere which lists these desktop choices for user to select from? Perhaps if I commented out the other alternatives the chooser prompt would go away?

Intermittently Firefox reverts to opening its windows maximized. I expect it to remember last size and revert to that.

Ubuntu 18.04, latest patches, Firefox as supplied with Ubuntu, default GNOME desktop. When I was 17.04/Unity desktop (if that matters) it did re-open at same (non-maximized) size as last time I closed it. Now it sometimes does that, and that continues to work for a while, but sometimes reverts to always opening maximized, which I don't want.

As of today, for example, no matter what I do in the way of closing it, it re-opens maximized. I tried created a new temporary profile, but that didn't seem to change behaviour. I have done nothing "special" that I am aware of since it last worked, and I cannot figure how to get desired behaviour back.

• Does anyone else suffer this intermittent behaviour?
• Does anyone know what I can do to sort this out?
• If it is saving this setting somewhere in the profile (~/.mozilla/firefox/xyz.default/), which exact file is it in?

I run Ubuntu as Guest OS in a Windows VirtualBox VM Host. In the existing, up-to-date VB, I have just moved from 17.04 to 18.04 by creating a new VM/.vdi from scratch (including Guest Additions).

Previously, whatever I resized the whole VM/desktop window to was remembered across reboots, which is obviously desirable.

Under 18.04 (which, remember is now using GNOME instead of Unity, if that is relevant) this does not happen. The resizing is fine, but when I reboot it reverts to some small-ish size.

I imagine this is a Guest Ubuntu issue, not a Host VirtualBox one, so I don't think trying to ask the VB people will help any. Obviously I have installed Guest Additions, and do have View > Auto-resize Guest Display enabled.

Is this happening to other VirtualBox+18.04 users? Am I missing some setting to tell Ubuntu/GNOME to restore window/desktop size?

Under Ubuntu 17.04 I develop a Python 3 application using PyQt5 (which uses Qt5 5.8.0) and mysql (5.7.18). All has been well recently until today, I now get upon launching:

QSqlDatabase: QMYSQL driver not loaded
QSqlDatabase: available drivers: QSQLITE QMYSQL QMYSQL3 QPSQL QPSQL7

This is what happens if you have not previously done a:

apt-get install libqt5sql5-mysql

but I have done that, and tried uninstalling it and reinstalling it with same result.

Running locate libqsqlmysql shows me:

/usr/lib/x86_64-linux-gnu/qt5/plugins/sqldrivers/libqsqlmysql.so
/usr/local/lib/python3.5/dist-packages/PyQt5/Qt/plugins/sqldrivers/libqsqlmysql.so

The first of these is dated Feb 9 2017, I believe it is Qt5 and not PyQt5, it ldds without error, and I do not think is relevant.

The second however is dated Jun 21 2017, so looks like the culprit. If I go: ldd /usr/local/lib/python3.5/dist-packages/PyQt5/Qt/plugins/sqldrivers/libqsqlmysql.so, in the output I note:

libmysqlclient.so.18 => not found
libssl.so.10 => not found
libcrypto.so.10 => not found

Am I right that is the problem? So it's a PyQt5 issue, not a Qt5 one? Can anyone suggest how to remedy? (I do not have an old state to revert to.)

I have just installed the final 17.04 Release. Having problems with the Unity Launcher (not Dash, don't use that), compared to what has always worked in 16.04 & 14.04.

[To create a shortcut on Launcher I always run the program first from the shell, then when it's running I right-click its icon in Launcher and Lock to Launcher: if that is not the right way to do things let me know.]

Having locked mysql_workbench, when I click icon to launch it does its "flashing" for a few seconds but nothing happens, the application window does not appear?

Possibly relevant: I see that in 16.04 this had created ~/.local/share/applications/mysql-workbench-bin.desktop. In 17.04 it has created ~/.local/share/applications/_usr_lib_mysql-workbench_mysql-workbench-bin.desktop, which looks a bit ugly?

My VDI file keeps growing and I don't understand why. VirtualBox support have confirmed this is an Ubuntu Guest OS issue, not a host VB one. (BTW, is this question best answered here, or should I be asking at https://superuser.com ?)

I am running latest VirtualBox (5.1.18) under Windows 7 (Home Premium) 64-bit as Host. Ubuntu 16.04 (latest patches) 64-bit as Guest. VDI file is using dynamically allocate storage up to 100G.

When I used to run Ubuntu 14.04 all seemed reasonable. Recently I have been finding the VDI image keeps growing in size. It has grown from 7G to 14G. (This may not be much to some of you, but with an 8G memory stick for backup it's a problem for me!) I can boot Ubuntu to Unity desktop and then immediately exit, and the image can grow by 0.5G.

In Ubuntu the output from df -h shows:

Filesystem      Size  Used Avail Use% Mounted on
/dev/sda1        97G  7.7G   84G   9% /

So that is saying there is an extra 6G beyond Used which has been "lost" compared to Avail. du -h -x -s / confirms 7.6G used.

1. What & where is the extra missing storage?
2. Are there known problems here between VirtualBox and Ubuntu 16.04 (14.04 did not seem to have this problem)? I am seeing some posts on the net stating that 16.04 is using excessive desktop memory, though nothing amounting to 6G....

2. Successfully installed PyCharm 2016.3.3.

3. When start debugging, message comes up stating warning: Debugger speedups using cython not found. Run '"/usr/bin/python3.5" "/usr/share/pycharm/pycharm-community-2016.3.3/helpers/pydev/setup_cython.py" build_ext --inplace' to build.

Fair enough. But when I try to do this command (as others have done, apparently successfully), I get:

In Qt Creator (3.0.1, Ubuntu 14.04.LTS), how do you insert a literal "tab" character (\t) (into a C source file) in the Text Editor? (Within a line, the Tab key inserts spaces as per your C++ Indentation level setting.)

At the moment I am having to find a tab character somewhere and use copy & paste. I expected to find some sort of "InsertLiteralCharacter" Command in Tools > Options > Environment > Keyboard, but there isn't one. (While we are there, I see that Commands Indent & Unindent claim to be unbound, but Tab & Shift+Tab respectively do these; don't know why those are not shown?)

[EDIT: For clarity, I want to insert a tab character into (the middle of) lines. I am not asking about tab character behaviour for indenting at the start of a line.]

I am running vanilla 64-bit Ubuntu 14.04 LTS in latest VirtualBox (5.1.12) under Windows 7. I have VB's latest Guest Additions installed. I have switched VB's Display Enable 3D Acceleration on. I have an NVidia GeForce GTS 450. The output from /usr/lib/nux/unity_support_test -p is all "yes", FWIW.

All seems to be well, until I run Qt Creator (3.0.1). The screen comes up OK, with the window "furniture" borders and the central pane. But then I can interact with the window borders OK, but the main central pane stays fixed on the desktop (e.g. if I "minimize" Qt via the icon in the window border), no menus etc. are shown over it, and the whole thing is unusable.

Is this a VirtualBox, Ubuntu or Qt Creator issue? Does this happen to others of you? Any suggestions (other than switch 3D Acceleration off,which I have done for now, and then it works OK)?

QtCreator (3.0.1, Ubuntu 14.04 LTS) allows the installation of C++ code Beautifier "Uncrustify", for reformatting existing code. This all looks simple from instructions http://doc.qt.io/qtcreator/creator-beautifier.html, but I am stuck on basic inability to install.

I have downloaded, compiled and installed the latest uncrustify-0.61. This creates the executable etc. fine, and installs in system area.

The instructions then state:

Select Help > About Plugins > C++ > Beautifier to enable the plugin.

Well, there is no "Beautifier" plugin showing under C++. Hardly surprising, since building/installing "Uncrustify" does not do anything to "tell" Qt Creator it is there/available. How do you get Qt Creator to know the plugin is available to Load?

In have searched everywhere on the web for help. My guess is that in directory /usr/lib/x86_64-linux-gnu/qtcreator/plugins/QtProject there needs to be a file like Uncrustify.pluginspec (plus anything else), but there is no mention of this. I have scoured the web for anything to show how to actually install and make it work, but found nothing more than the instructions above, which do not work.
