I am attempting to install Ubuntu 24.04 onto a new desktop PC. The installation is very strange.

What appears to be happening is that the systemd is hanging the system after starting one of its services. Basically, I am seeing it stop after the following line:

     starting systemd_rfkill.service - Load/Save RF Kill switch status
[OK] started systemd_rfkill.service - Load/Save RF Kill switch status

and then the system freezes. The installation system doesn't come up, and in fact the only thing I can do is shut off or restart the computer.

Has anyone else seen this problem? If so, do you have a way to fix it???

The CPU is one of the latest Ryzen 7. The CPU Board has 64G memory. The main disk is a 4Tb SSD The screen is powered by a Nvidia board

One thing of interest: After posting this problem, I successfully installed Ubuntu V22.04 server onto the system. I then upgraded from 22.04 to 24.04. Unfortunately, after the upgrade the system rebooted -- then it froze after the same systemd line.

I just installed Ubuntu 24.04 and I've already hit a problem of things changing with no notice.

On Ubuntu 20.04, when I created a system user using adduser, it created a home folder for that user:

$ sudo adduser --system --group barney
Adding system user `barney' (UID 114) ...
Adding new group `barney' (GID 119) ...
Adding new user `barney' (UID 114) with group `barney' ...
Creating home directory `/home/barney' ...

Now, in Ubuntu 24.04, the exact same command suddenly works a different way:

$ sudo adduser --system --group barney
info: Selecting UID from range 100 to 999 ...

info: Selecting GID from range 100 to 999 ...
info: Adding system user `barney' (UID 112) ...
info: Adding new group `barney' (GID 112) ...
info: Adding new user `barney' (UID 112) with group `barney' ...
info: Not creating `/nonexistent'.

No home folder is created. Okay, fine, one of the thousand paper cuts of using Linux that I've gotten calloused to.

Can I correct this by manually adding the /home/barney/ directory? That is, if I run

$ sudo mkdir /home/barney
$ sudo chown barney:barney /home/barney
$ sudo chmod 775 /home/barney

is that precisely the same as /home/barney/ having been created as the home folder for barney at the time the user was added, or are there further complications under the hood that I'm not aware of?

I have Kubuntu 22.04. Is there a program, script, etc. in *buntu that can rename all files in a folder with non-Latin characters to their Latin equivalent? For example, I have a folder that contains files with names like:

Andúril
Dúnedain
Éomer

and I need to rename them to:

Anduril
Dunedain
Eomer

today I upgraded to Kubuntu 24.10 from 24.04. After the update I'm unable to boot to Windows 10 from GRUB, while it's still possible directly picking Windows Boot Manager from UEFI.

I've tried to relaunch sudo update-grub and got such results:

After reboot still same happens I just got: error, cannot load image and it returns to main GRUB menu, whats even strager I cannot then boot into kubuntu untill I restart the PC. It just begins to launch it and then returns to the main GRUB menu. After restart I can boot into Kubuntu just normally.

My grub config /boot/grub/grub.cfg here.

I'va Kubuntu and grub installed on /dev/sdb/, /dev/sdc/ is one of Windows striped disks. Windows is located on /dev/nvme0n1/.

I have the Budgie flavour of Ubuntu installed. I have installed the Awesome Window Manager. Can you have Awesome without a GUI? Will my programs still run normally?

I don't just text-based terminal programs, stuff like Visual Studio Code. Can you load only Awesome and have your graphical-based programs work like normal or is Awesome alone only going to enable you to use Text-based terminal programs?
