Here is an image for Dvorak programmer keyboard with ordered keys

I want to customize Programmer Dvorak to swap the number keys 7,5,3,1,9,0,2,4,6,8 in order. I was amazed I couldn't find the English Dvorak keyboard layout for programmers with top numbers in order on Github.It is there on Github for windows

Community pages to create a new KB layout aren't easy to understand. Is there any keyboard remapper for ubuntu like in windows. Else :

How does one change the keyboard layout from Qwerty to another layout such as Dvorak?

I looked in:

• Settings > Region & Language
• Settings > Keyboard
• Help > Ubuntu Desktop Guide > Search

But I found no clue about how to change keyboard layout.

I tried searching for English in the Region & Language settings. But no Dvorak option appears, nor any other Qwerty or other layout — contrary to this posting.

I want to use Dvorak for English and Qwerty for Chinese/Japanese. I can get Japanese input to work but it's still under the Dvorak layout. Any help would be much appreciated.

I want to type A with dots (Ä / ä) as one-level keybinding in Ubuntu 16.04's keyboard of Macbook Air 2013-mid, output of setxkbmap -query

By default, there is no AltGr in the keyboard, just two Alts. This command makes your right alt the compose key (AltGr) but maintains your own custom keyboard configurations etc having Capslock as CTRL by caps:ctrl_modifier, see here

It would be really great to have xmodmap independent solution if this is going to be changed because it is going to be depreciated.

Two-level keybinding approach

We can only do two-level keybinding approach with Dvorak International with deadkeys.

• SeverusTux's answer is two-level command as AltGr-Shift-Q + A, which works only in us-drovak, international with deadkeys.
• SeverusTux. Ctrl+Shift+u +e4 + Enter works and gives you ä. How can you map this to a one-level keybinding Alt-a?

I do where you see that the GUI make the change elsewhere. I really want to know where

This shows that the xserver does not update fast. You have to change your keyboard to something else and back again, for the change.

I want one-level command as AltGr-A for ä and AltGr-Shift-A for Ä in English(US-dvorak). I do xev -e keyboard and press AltGr

I set A with dots in English(dvorak) by AltGr-a. Merge the changes in/usr/share/X11/xkb/symbols/us; now German-Dvorak because it works very well for Scandinavian languages too (from here)

Bugs

1. TODO problem with reloading the keyboard back to xserver https://unix.stackexchange.com/q/290449/16920 The manual change does not work always.
2. Complications: Xserver does not load those keys fast and not even in all cases after restart/logout.

I was in the process of filing an bug on Launchpad, but I had second thoughts because there were so many threatening warnings of the effect, "Don't file a bug report unless you're sure it's a bug, and you should really provide a package name".

The problem I have, and I've had it for years, is the following:

When I'm installing Ubuntu, it asks me to type in my location before it asks me what my keyboard layout is. Using a QWERTY keyboard with the buttons popped off and in the Dvorak order, this is annoying, because it is assumes I am using a QWERTY keyboard, and so I have to guess at where all the QWERTY keys are to spell my city's name. It seems like it would make more sense to switch the order of these two questions.

(I'll be the first person to admit that this is a very minor problem that has probably wasted less than 2 minutes of my life in total -- but it's the principle of the thing :p)

So my question is: is this order there for a particular reason, and if it isn't, is it appropriate to file it as a bug, and under which package name?
