Questions[function-keys](ubuntu)

Since upgrading to 21.04, I can no longer use Guake as expected. My F12 key does not appear to function the way it used to. It will not summon the Guake window, and when I manually open it, pressing F12 will not cause the window to hide.

Instead, pressing F12 prints a "~". In fact, many function keys seem to, including F5 through F8, F10, and F12. Interestingly, F11 does successfully toggle Guake in and out of fullscreen mode.

When I check the shortcuts in the Guake Preferences, F12 is mapped to "Toggle Guake visibility". I can undo that mapping, set it to something else, and then successfully remap it to F12. But no matter what I set it to, it won't respond.

I have tried apt purge on all things guake and reinstalled, but it hasn't fixed the problem. Google hasn't been able to shed much light on this. Can anyone suggest another solution? Thanks very much.

I installed Ubuntu 19.04 on HP ProBook 450 G6 and noticed my function keys for increasing/decreasing brightness both act as toggling microphone, the rest works fine (and everything works fine on Win 10). I have two questions:

• Is there a way to reconfigure actions for those two keys?
• Is this a bug that I should report to Canonical?

On my A485 running 18.04, I noticed that when I press Fn+Esc, it correctly sets the alternate function key behavior but the FnLock indicator LED on the Esc key doesn't turn on. How can I set the FnLock LED to light up on Fn+Esc?

I noticed the intended behavior when enabling the BIOS setting for "Fn Sticky keys", in which the LED correctly turns on when it should.

I tried acpi_listen, but it doesn't show any events happening when pressing Fn or Fn+Esc (with/without Fn sticky keys), even if it does for the other function keys.

Is there a way to get it to light up without having to use Fn Sticky keys?

I realize there are potential duplicates of my question. However, I have scoured different pages and nothing solved my problem. I have recently done a fresh install of Ubuntu 18.04 (had the previous long-term release) and simply cannot get the brightness keys to trigger brightness changes.

Details:

• Ubuntu x64 18.04.
• Not using Wayland.
• No integrated graphics in the processor.
• There is no screen brightness slider when I click on the battery icon. I had a brightness controller showing on the previous Ubuntu installation on this exact same hardware - why was it hidden in this iteration of Ubuntu?

With this, I at least know that pressing the brightness change keys (via Fn plus F8 for lower brightness or F9 for higher) is recognized by the system. If I'm not mistaken, these events are supposed to trigger certain brightness change scripts.

However, it seems nothing is called, even though those events are assigned.

Furthermore, if I inspect the directory in variable $KEYS_DIR, there are the following contents:

The brightness and max_brightness files are empty.

Everything appears to be correctly setup, but I can't understand why doesn't the brightness change, why doesn't it remain saved after reboot if I use an alternative program such as brightness-controller or xbacklight and why is the brightness slider missing?

While typing normal keys I have to press fn (function key) as it seems that the function key is pressed all the time.

What do I have to do to turn the function key off and it trigger it only when I press on it.
