when I install Ubuntu 16.04 with UEFI+ GPT, I feel uncertain! Why I don't select default install? Because it's stupid.

When I create a EFI partition, should I select primary or logic?

When I create a EXT4 partition, should I select primary or logic?

When I create a SWAP partition, should I select primary or logic?

And what's the function of "reserve boot area"?

I was wondering how to safely convert a Hybrid GPT/MBR to a pure GPT partition scheme? (Without Reformatting)

The reason why I ask is, I currently triple-boot with Ubuntu 16.04 LTS, Windows 10 and Mac OSX Lion.

Originally I needed to format my drive with a Hybrid partition scheme to install Windows 7 but I have since upgraded to Windows 10.

I know now that Windows 10 supports booting from GPT partitions and I would like to covert everything to a pure GPT partition scheme without reformatting.

If I can do this, I would be able to reformat my HFS+ partition to an APFS partition and install High Sierra.

So the questions are:

  1. How do I convert my Hybrid MBR to a pure GPT?
  2. Will it break booting into any of my OSes if I do? (Windows 10, Linux, MacOSX)

I just want to clarify. When making the ubuntu live usb using Rufus, do we select:

  1. GPT partition scheme for UEFI
  2. MBR partition scheme for UEFI

I currently have windows 10 pro installed and would like to make a dual boot system by installing ubuntu 16.04 alongside windows 10 pro.

Update:

I had tried to boot into the usb but it hang at the login screen. Anyone have any idea how to solve this? Really running out of ideas to try. I think 16.04.4 ubuntu image iso is faulty. I am thinking of downgrading back to 16.04.3 to see if it works.

Also another side question -- do we need nvidia drivers to be the same in Windows 10 and also in Ubuntu 16.04?

I've just installed Ubuntu on a new SSD along with a HDD for data.

Strangely, when I divided partitions at install, 1MB of non-removable free space was reserved at the beginning of each disk. I ignored them however, because I thought they wouldn't be a problem.

But after install, when I sudo fdisk -l, I get the following warnings:

I have little knowledge on GPT/GUIDs, but I'm guessing that the warnings were caused because of the 1MBs at the installation stage.

So here are my questions:

  1. Can the warning be a potential problem, issue or difficulty in the future?
  2. Is there a smart & safe way to fix the warning?

I'm trying to install ubuntu / mint on my lenovo 570. Since it's better to use GPT, i'm trying to use that. I get these problems, either some partitions are misalligned, GRUB doesn't install or it just doesn't boot, just shows some firmware or whatever of the laptop, no grub, no grub error or any sort!

So i wanted some instructions on how to install 11.10 in a GPT with a separate /home partition.
