Suprisingly i couldn't find any ppa with prebuilt ffmpeg packages to add QSV (intel quicksync video) support.
Are there any, around? And isn't QSV added by default because it would rely on proprietary code? What other reason could there be, since it's a feature that >50% of the systems have these days?
I can not get hardware decoding for HEVC 10 bit files and VP9 (YouTube) through web browsers to work. Tried a bunch of online "solutions" with no luck.
I have a nVidia GTX 1050 (2GB), running Kubuntu 18.04 with the nVidia driver 430.29.
Is nVidia just a lost cause? Is AMD a better bet?
My laptop has an 8th Generation Intel Core i5 8250U processor, with an Nvidia GeForce MX150 GPU, 8GB RAM and a 1TB hard drive. I have installed Ubuntu 16.04 64-bit as a guest OS on Windows 10 64-bit using VirtualBox. Ubuntu was not running smoothly, as there was a lot of lagging.
I searched online for information about the problem and many sources recommended to enable 3D acceleration in the VirtualBox guest OS settings so I did, but after a few loading screens Ubuntu 16.04 doesn't respond and gets stuck on a particular black screen with faint white text of some sort.
Checking Enable 3D Acceleration in the VirtualBox guest OS settings causes a black screen and checking on Enable 2D Video Acceleration results in a message that says: Invalid Settings have been selected.

The new Gnome 3.0 requires hardware acceleration support. I wanted to try it out -- but how do I tell whether hardware acceleration is supported on my machine?
I've heard about the possibility to play videos using graphic processor of video card instead of normal processor. I've read a few tutorial but I haven't see improvement in performances, processors continue to work a lot, so maybe I just haven't enabled this feature. I'm wondering if there's a simple and quick method to do it and which are practical advantages, no technical or theoretic. I have an nvidia 8400 and I use proprietary driver (260.19.06).
