I need to install Ubuntu 19 o. 20 o. 21 o. 22 on a quite recent machine.
I enabled all compatibility and legacy modes in BIOS to avoid UEFI. (DO THAT FIRST!!!)
I do not want to use UEFI.
The installation media (Ubuntu - ISO put on a USB-stick using dd) wants to force UEFI boot mode.
I want simple mbr and grub boot (although Lilo was so much better than grub). I totally decline to use UEFI.
How can I install Ubuntu without UEFI?
The question is quite simple. I have search for an answer for a while but not sure I got the correct answer. Since mistakes could easily destroy my drive and data, I really want things to be clear.
I am running Ubuntu on a 250GB ssd (/dev/sda) which has two partitions, each is about 125GB big. The sda1 is mounted to / and sda2 is mounted to /home. Now I want to move everything into a new 1TB ssd (let's say it is /dev/sdc) and expand each drive into 500GB. After some research, I proposed two approaches:
1)do dd if=/dev/sda of=/dev/sdc to clone the whole disk. After this I should get a bootable disk with two 125 GB partions and some unallocated space. Right? Then I need resize the sdc1 and sdc1 into 500GB with something like gparted. The resizing might take long, right?
2) The second approach is format the new drive first, make two 500GB partitions. do dd if=/dev/sda1 of=/dev/sdc1 and dd if=/dev/sda2 of=/dev/sdc2 to clone both partitions. At this point, this disk should be unbootable, right? In order to make it bootable, I need copy the bootloader into the new one. All I need is the first 446 bytes. So I can
dd if=/dev/sda of=/tmp/mbrsda.bak bs=512 count=1 then dd if=/tmp/mbrsda.bak of=/dev/sdc bs=446 count=1. By doing this I made it bootable and also preserved the partition table for 500GB+500GB. This approach will save me from resizing the disk.
And for both approaches, I need change the UUID in the /etc/fstab file. This can be done by first mount the new drive after cloning: sudo mount /dev/sdc1 /mnt/, then edit the /mnt/etc/fstab file.
Am I right about all of this? Any potential risk of messing up my old drive here? Thanks a lot!
I was wondering how to safely convert a Hybrid GPT/MBR to a pure GPT partition scheme? (Without Reformatting)
The reason why I ask is, I currently triple-boot with Ubuntu 16.04 LTS, Windows 10 and Mac OSX Lion.
Originally I needed to format my drive with a Hybrid partition scheme to install Windows 7 but I have since upgraded to Windows 10.
I know now that Windows 10 supports booting from GPT partitions and I would like to covert everything to a pure GPT partition scheme without reformatting.
If I can do this, I would be able to reformat my HFS+ partition to an APFS partition and install High Sierra.

I currently have windows 10 pro installed and would like to make a dual boot system by installing ubuntu 16.04 alongside windows 10 pro.

I had tried to boot into the usb but it hang at the login screen. Anyone have any idea how to solve this? Really running out of ideas to try. I think 16.04.4 ubuntu image iso is faulty. I am thinking of downgrading back to 16.04.3 to see if it works.
Also another side question -- do we need nvidia drivers to be the same in Windows 10 and also in Ubuntu 16.04?
Original title: How can i solve (un)booting windows 7 on the same partition with grub?
I've been researching this problem for two to three days but I have came up empty.
Basically, partition 1 is Windows 7 and partition 2 is Ubuntu 12.04. I told Ubuntu to install into partition 2 and to install GRUB on partition 1 and that works fine. But the problem now is that I can't boot Windows 7. It just returns to the GRUB menu after I select it.
From what I have researched, if I can edit GRUB to boot Windows 7 "mbr" or the bootloader \windows\system32\winload.exe (without using a Windows 7 repair disk), my problem will be solved. Is this even possible?
