As the title above, does anyone know what DORMANT mean in this output command ?

$ ip link show wlan0

3: wlan0: <BROADCAST,MULTICAST,UP,LOWER_UP> mtu 1500 qdisc mq state UP mode DORMANT group default qlen 1000
link/ether 00:c0:ca:a8:6c:84 brd ff:ff:ff:ff:ff:ff

The network works fine with this mode as well.

I hoped by now that installing Ubuntu/linux would be easy by now. But oh what was I wrong.

I have one problem left. My dell xps 15 won't go into sleep mode. I got this error message in dmesg when it return from sleep:

I'm using an additional screen alongside a laptop in my everyday work. The problem is, ever since I switched from Windows 10 to Linux, whenever I turn on PyCharm (CE) Display Mode is being switched [just like I have pressed SUPER + P or Fn + F4 - menu pops up letting me choose whether I'd like to use both screens cloned and so on. There is only ~ 1 second to respond before it switches to some random mode. Even if i'll manage to put the cursor on the right place it still changes their places - left with the right one) - EDIT to clarify]

I've tried Linux Mint 19.2 (Cinnamon), Kubuntu 19.04, Ubuntu 19.04 and 19.10, to check which distribution will suit me best. Finally, I've decided to stick with Ubuntu, yet the problem kept occurring in every single one of those distros. What is more, in both Ubuntu 19.04 and 19.10, the problem also occurs while launching Settings.

I've managed to solve this problem in Kubuntu by simply deleting a shortcut (Fn + F4) that changes Display Mode. I can't do this in Ubuntu since there is no shortcut for Display Mode available to change via Settings / Devices / Keyboard Shortcuts.

Is there any other way to stop the screens switching, or a way around to disable that Shortcut?

I cannot boot my laptop with 12.04 (or any older version) cos I keep getting the error message of "low graphics mode, " I click "OK" and then it gets stuck on a window giving me 4 options and I cannot do or choose anything, how can I fix this?

I want to switch from Windows XP to Ubuntu and there is one thing that I'm heavily using in XP—an MP3 alarm clock. In the evening I turn the PC to hibernated mode. In the morning it wakes up (based on Windows' scheduler) and runs a special program that then runs media player with a defined playlist, starts music and then slowly volumes up the sound.

So, my question is, are all these features present in Ubuntu?

  • Hibernate PC with ease
  • Wake up from hibernate in a scheduled moment of time
  • Media player that can start playing music automatically (seems that's the problem on Windows, that's why i need a special program for that)
