I'm using Windows 10 and Ubuntu 18.04. Whenever I enter Ubuntu after the Grub menu (It starts at log.) there is a constantly annoying noise from the headphone, but in Windows 10 there is no problem. The noise comes out only through my headphone, however the speakers work properly.

I have tried many of solutions below other titles but none of them resolved my issue. This weird noise never goes away. I even muted each input and output volume or listen to any video there is always boring noise. My laptop is an Asus n552vw and my kernel version is 4.15.

Is there anyone who can help me?

Solutions that I have tried :

• Running

  alsamixer - disable the loopback
  

• Adding 0 in the /sys/module/snd_hda_intel/parameters/power_save file.

• INTEL_AUDIO_POWERSAVE=false in /usr/lib/pm-utils/power.d/intel-audio-powersave

• Adding options snd-hda-intel model=dell-headset-multi in the /etc/modprobe.d/alsa-base.conf

• Change the option values SOUND_POWER_SAVE_ON_AC=0 SOUND_POWER_SAVE_ON_BAT=0 in the /etc/default/tlp

• Muted input volume and at hdajackretask changed pin 0x12 internal mic to not connected.

(I guess I collected almost all solutions under the single title at least)

I’m using Ubuntu 18.04 installed on a laptop (Toshiba Satellite L675D-S7052) with an internal microphone. When I use the terminal to record a sound sox -t alsa default ./recording.wav, or use discord, I can hear a loud crackling / popping noise during playback. I’ve tried the many options (noise / echo canceling) by editing the etc/pulse/default.pa file with no success.

I’ve also tried lowering the microphone input volume under “settings”, but regardless the input level bar still jumps randomly in a very quiet room.

Any ideas?

Edit: Audio and video files play without any distortion. The microphone worked fine with Windows 10. I've also tried an external microphone that yielded the same results.

Microphone settings

Whenever I plug in my headphones on my Dell XPS 9370 I hear a white hissing sound. Apparently, this was common in the XPS 9360 as well and can be fixed by setting the headphone mic volume to 10dB.

$ amixer -c PCH cset 'name=Headphone Mic Boost Volume' 1

This doesn't work on the 9370.

The sound card is a realtek ALC3271. I noticed that Realtek provide a file for Linux called patch_realtek.c. In the Linux linux-4.15.18 kernel (closest version I could see to my kernel) there is no mention of ALC3271.

However, it appears at some point and is present in the latest patch. I'm thinking that I might need to add this patch to my kernel as i am running the 4.15.0-39-generic kernel. Does this seem like a reasonable thing to try?

How would I go about applying the patch above?

[EDIT] ALC3271 does appear in the 4.15 kernel so the question is more or less incorrect.

From time to time I get a lot of static noise when playing sound. It stops when no sound is played (e.g. when music playback is stopped).

• Seems to be independent from output device (same symptons with either my speakers or headphones)
• When stopping sound, the static noise lingers for just a tiny bit. It doesn’t stop immediately
• Unplugging my speakers and then plugging them in again amplifies the symptoms.
• Opening the alsamixer GUI in the terminal and making sure that the levels are not in the red area makes things a bit better, but doesn’t solve this issue

Lastly, for what I can tell, this happens at completely random times. And it goes away just like that. I tried rebooting several times, no luck. At some point in the future it will be just fine.

So I have absolutely no idea what the hell is going on and how to fix it.

Is it possible to do realtime noise-removal with PulseAudio, so the sound output that's coming out is smoother?
