Scribus installation guide for Ubuntu says that «the packages from the Debian and Ubuntu repositories are the standard way to obtain Scribus» and the download page says that the current stable version is 1.4.8.
However, sudo apt-get install scribus installs version 1.5.6 (development), that is «for testing purposes only» (as advised in the splash screen) and indeed when I open it I can't even activate any button or menu item, so I want to install the stable version. How can I do that?
From Scribus 1.4.2 on, Scribus should find previously installed dictionaries while installing and be able to use them. With version 1.5.5 from the repository this doesn't seem to work. Although different dictionaries have been installed via LibreOffice, the option from the menu "Extras/Check Spelling" only shows "English (US)". Furthermore I can't find an option within Scribus to install additional dictionaries.
I use three installations on three computers, all of them Ubuntu 20.04. On one of them I can select from all installed dictionaries, on the two others there's only "English (US)".
Hunspell is not installed on any of the three.

My system is Ubuntu 20.04. I'm trying to learn how to use Scribus. I realized that some property windows make the main document grayed out. That's all good, but when I try to move the floating property window, the whole windows with the grayed out main document move altogether and even change the size. Is it normal behavior of windows in ubuntu 20.04? I remember other programs like gimp do so as well in Ubuntu 20.04.
I just installed ubuntu budgie 18.04 on my new computer. I installed the set of tools that I use on my linux workstations including krita (via appimage), blender (with the files from blender.org), kdenlive (via appimage) and scribus-ng (via ppa).
I have a problem with scribus and krita: the buttons, menus, icons, ... are huge and pixelized. But the text is at a standard size. Both program are unusable without correction.
For krita I went in the configuration file and remove hidpi support (there is such an option). Now it works like a charm. But for scribus there is no such option. I tried to launch it with QT_SCALE_FACTOR=0.6 and it is still barely usable as the text decrease too.
I though that it would be a problem with Qt, but it seems not, as kdenlive worked perfectly out of the box. Still, with appimage it's hard to be sure.
Is there some option I'm missing somewhere ? Could it be that my screen (HP compaq la2405wg) is sending misleading hidpi informations ?
I typically have my keyboard set up to use multiple alphabets, toggling with alt+shift; I use American English and Greek most frequently, followed by occasionally Japanese with Anthy, and occasionally Cyrillic. It works very well in almost every program.
However, Scribus, which is otherwise very decent layout software, refuses to recognize Greek. I really need that λ! Am I missing a package, or is there something else I need to do? The space isn't even filled with a filler character, it just remains blank.
This alphabet is awfully important to engineers, so I would be very surprised if there was no solution.
Update: I have determine that the π key consistently works fine, apparently on all fonts; but even on Neohellenic, it is the only one. Is something weird going on with font processing?
I have now attempted this on two completely physically separate machines, with different hardware, and gotten the same result. I typically use alt+shift to switch layouts, via Mint 19's keyboard manager. Doing so works on literally every other program I've tried, on both machines. However, Scribus, on both machines, ceases accepting input until I switch back to en mode. In gr, the only key that works is π; all others have no effect.
Symbol insertion works reasonably well, but this is a non-solution if I'm to attempt to type anything in the Hellenic alphabet.
