I have a laptop on which I managed to install Lubuntu, but the system didn't detect the right keyboard layout. I know how to change it, but I don't know its name, so I'm stuck.

Is there a way to identify it with a wizard like the one Ubuntu uses during its installation that asks the user to press a series of keys? To be clearer, I'm looking for the tool you can use clicking on the Detect Keyboard Layout button at this step (or a similar one):

I have an archive of audio files named like <title>.<ext> (e.g. Track title.ogg) and a CSV file with metadata for those files with the following structure:

Is there a way to automatically apply the metadata to the corresponding tracks?

Please also consider the following.

1. Some file names contain possibly problematic charachters like spaces, ', ., ,. I could remove them easily via regex, but I'd prefer to avoid that if possible because it would mean that I also have to rename those files manually after applying the tags.
2. I'd much prefer to use only FOSS software.
3. The metadata includes the name of the cover for each file. I would like to add it automatically too, but I could also do that manually (the tracks are divided in several groups - roughly for author - sharing the same cover, so doing that manually shouldn't require much time).

Either CLI or GUI solutions are good as long as they work.

Scribus installation guide for Ubuntu says that «the packages from the Debian and Ubuntu repositories are the standard way to obtain Scribus» and the download page says that the current stable version is 1.4.8.

However, sudo apt-get install scribus installs version 1.5.6 (development), that is «for testing purposes only» (as advised in the splash screen) and indeed when I open it I can't even activate any button or menu item, so I want to install the stable version. How can I do that?

I have installed GIMP through snap, and it works well. However, I need to access with it to some folders and files that are not in my default /home/user paths (i.e. ~/Desktop, ~/Music and so on), some of which are also hidden. Some research (e.g. 1, 2) suggested me that I have to run something like sudo snap connect gimp:personal-files, but if I do so I get an error:

How can I grant GIMP access to all the contents of my home folder?

I need to setup a VirtualBox machine that:

1. can connect to the internet;
2. can't connect to the devices in my LAN.

If I understand the manual, I should reate a NAT Network from File > Preferences > Network and then set Settings > Network > Adapter 1 to:

• [✓] Enable Network Adapter
• Attached to: [NAT Network ▼]
• Name: [NatNetwork ▼]

However, if I do so my virtual machine is still able to reach my modem, the host system and any other device in the LAN.

Is my setup hypothesis correct? If not, what I'm missing?

I do one full duplicity backup (through Déjà-Dup) of my /home (except a couple of directories) about once a week. Now I found that I saved some very big files that I don't really need to include in my backups, so I'd like to remove them from the old ones to save some disk space. Is that possible?

I need to edit the video recorded by my webcam "on the fly" and to stream it to a Google Hangouts call. What I want to do is to remove the background of the video (and possibly substitute it with an image), so that the other participants can't see what's happening behind me. Is that possible?

I found that OBS Studio can do that, but it looks like Google Hangouts streaming isn't supported. I found a plugin that creates something like a "virtual cam" (OBS Virtualcam | OBS Forums), but it isn't avilable for Ubuntu.

Any solution is good for me, but I would much prefer FOSS-only ones.

I must work with data from a huge CSV file in a format like this one. The file is very huge (~200MB) and my PC is having difficulties with it, so I would like to split the file in smaller ones easier to cope with. Supposing that the file has a format like this:

• 20-30.1.csv (5000 lines)
• 20-30.2.csv (4321 remaining lines)
• ...

I would also like to repeat the first line (header) of the input file at the beginning of each output file and also remove some columns I don't need, but that's not essential. So my ideal output for age rank 20-40 would be (supposing I want to remove NAME and AGE RANK column):

Is there a way to automatically manipulate the file like that? I can use any tool or script, but I would much prefer to avoid proprietary software.

I have just installed qBittorrent and I found the option Preferences > Encryption mode:, that can be set to Allow, Require or Disable encryption. What does it do? If I don't use encryption, would other users in my LAN or my ISP or other subjects (apart from seeder I download from) be able to discover what I'm downloading or seeding?

I should make the question a bit clearer. If I set Encryption mode: to Require encryption, would it be possible for a third party (ISP, public WiFi provider and so on) to discover what I'm downloading or seeding targeting me as a specific user or my specific internet access point and not, e.g., downloading or seeding a certain file to see what other IPs are doing the same? If so, what is the difference in enabling the option against not enabling it?

I'm not looking for a way to prevent anyone from monitoring my bittorrent activity - I should be able to set up a VPN or proxy system (or at least to find out how to do that =)) if I need - I'm just trying to understand what the option actually does.

I have an image bigger than A4 (210x297 mm), let's say 400x400 mm. Is there a way to automaically print it on multiple pages keeping the original size, so that I can just put them side by side to get my orignal image?

I dont' mind small margins on each page (I can cut them away later) but I need to keep the original size.

I found out that my Android phone's cam has a higher quality than the one of my PC and I'm wondering if there is a way to use my phone as a webcam for the computer. Is that possible?

USB (preferred), Bluetooth and LAN connections are all suitable as any other solution that doesn't require any expense (otherwise I would just buy a webcam), but I would prefer to use only open source software if possible.

I have a computer with a disk divided in two partitions. In the first one I have a Windows 10 installation and all the software, in the other one there are my data.

I have decided to switch to Ubuntu, but I need to keep all my data. Also, I want to have my /home directory in a different partition. Is there a way to:

1. install Ubuntu overwriting the Windows partition and
2. tell Ubuntu to put the /home directory in the already existing data partition keeping the existing data?

Premise: I have never used LibreOffice's remote access option before - I just discovered it today and I think it might be very useful for me: I don't know how (nor whether) it works.

I'd like to access my files on Google Drive with LibreOffice. I have never done that before, so I must add my account to LibreOffice.

I'm trying to do that with File > Open remote... > Manage services > Add service. I fill the form with my username and password and hit OK:

Now LibreOffice asks for a "6 digit PIN" (good, I use 2FA, looks like it successfully connected to Google's server):

But when I enter my PIN and hit OK again I get an error saying that "The specified device is invalid":

I supposed it was related to the login process, so I tried to combine

1. my username with and without the "@gmail.com" suffix, and
2. the "normal" and an "app-specific" password I created ad hoc (https://support.google.com/accounts/answer/185833?hl=en)

but LibreOffice keeps resulting in the error. How can I solve this?

For work purposes I have to use a not open source software that collects and sends to the producer MAC address, other device IDs and other hardware datas (from its privacy policy, which is not very exhaustive). Is there a way to:

1. find out what exact data the app stores, and
2. spoof them?

I suppose I could just run the app into a virtual machine, but I don't know if it would be sufficient to mask all the data and my PC isn't very powerful, so running a virtual machine is usually a pain.

I work with an Ubuntu Desktop 20.04 device to which I have root acces, so I can do whatever is needed. Open source only solutions would be much appreciated.

I forgot to specify some very important informations.

1. The software requires internet access (it's for videoconference purposes), so just blocking it in the firewall is not an available solution. That's what I already do with other software, but in this case it's just not an option.
2. I have already tried to ask to producer what data they collect, but the legal time for an answer has already expired and they didn't answer - but that's what I expected, as it looks like they're not subject to the GDPR.
3. The app is not run on a work machine - it's a software I've been required to use for home working due to coronavirus epidemic.

Virtualisation (update 2)

Some answers suggest to use virtualisation solutions like Firejail, but as far as I understand those softwares allow a "software isolation", where I need a sort of "hardware isolation" (meaning that the app must not have access to data about my hardware). Obviously I might be missing something - if that's the case please explain it.

I have two PCs both running Ubuntu 19.10. I need to remote control one of them with the other one, so I enabled screen sharing (Settings > Sharing > Screen sharing) for the "server" and connected to it with Remmina from the "client". It works, except that the client doesn't receive audio, which I need.

How can I enable audio receiving? In Remmina I can't find any audio related setting.

Some time ago I installed Brave but I didn't like it, so I removed it with sudo apt-get remove --purge brave-browser. After some time I had to reinstall it because I needed a Chromium-based browser. As soon as I opened it it asked be to redeem my old BATs, so I deduce that apt-get left something in my system.

Now I don't need Brave anymore and I'm wondering how to remove it completely. I would use sudo apt-get remove --purge brave-browser once more but it looks like it doesn't really remove everything - what command should I use instead?

I have installed TeXLive and added /usr/local/texlive/2019/bin/x86_64-linux to my $PATH through /etc/environment, so I should be able to run tlmgr from the terminal. I am able to do that as non-root user:

I get an error but there is nothing strange, to update the packages I obviously have to run tlmgr as root - and that's where I am having troubles:

Still, if I check the content of /etc/environment it includes /usr/local/texlive/2019/bin/x86_64-linux:

I'm working with Ubuntu 19.10 (Eoan Ermine). I installed TeXLive "over the internet" because the "Acquire TeX Live" page recommends to do so.

I have an Ubuntu Server machine in which I need to run a Python script:

• at boot and then every 30 minutes
• with root permission
• without logging in

I searched on the internet and I found out that I should use sudo crontab -e to edit my cron settings and add a line like this one:

 30 * * * * python3 /myScriptPath/myScriptName.py

What I couldn't find is how to tell cron that my script must be run at boot and then every 30 minutes and not every hour at "hh:30" time.

Also, where should I store my script?

I have that old Android smartphone I'm not using anymore and I'd like to install Ubuntu or a derivate on it. Is it possible to do that and, if so, how?

I found some tutorials about dual boot with Android and Ubuntu and virtual machines running Ubuntu in Android. Note that they're not what I'm looking for: I want to overwrite Android with Ubuntu, not to have both of them nor one inside the other.

I have removed flatpak with sudo apt-get purge flatpak; however, if I run locate flatpak I find several files and several directories. Can I remove them all with rm -r or there is a "better" way? If so, how do I have to do that?
