Questions[xfce-panel](ubuntu)

I am facing a very annoying behavior in Xubuntu, and I have been experiencing this since many versions (I think 16.04 is when I switched to Xubuntu) with many different computers so this problem has to be very common. Surprisingly I did not found questions/answers in Google about this so I ask here.

When I click/right-click the icons next to the clock in the panel the menu appears below the mouse pointer. Because of this, sometimes the option that appears just below the pointer is accidentally clicked (even by doing a single click) and this is very annoying. Usually this option is to close the corresponding app, but it can be anything. In this link you can see a video with the problem I have. I did not manage to make the apps to accidentally close in the video, but you see the "exit" button appears just below the pointer. Is there any easy solution for this? Like adding a constant offset to the menus, or adding a constant delay time of about 333 ms.

How can I disable the Chromium icon in the system tray? It appears the first time I open Chromium, and remains until I shut down the PC, even if I close Chromium. It does not appear to provide any function; clicking on it does nothing with or without Chromium running.

I got mildly annoyed that duplicate wi-fi and bluetooth icons were showing up in my panel, and tracked it down to the fact that they were showing up in both systray and statusnotifier plugins. Can someone explain the differences among them (and also indicator)?

• "status notifier plugin" (AKA: statusnotifier)
• "indicator plugin" (AKA: indicator)

So far I've read that systray has been around forever, that statusnotifier is newer and is somehow blessed by freedesktop (?) and that indicator was written to "address design concerns Canonical was having" (here). Moreover, several things seem to have their own dedicated panel plugins, like "pulseaudio plugin" and "power manager plugin", which seem like they ought to work just fine as elements within either systray or statusnotifier. Why is such a simple aspect of the UI so fractionated? Is there any effort underway toward reunification into a single tray? Is there some semantic distinction among these that I'm missing, that explains why it makes sense to have more than one?

After doing apt update and apt dist-upgrade of Xubuntu 16.04, the nm panel plugin seems to have disappeared, both from my panel and the list of plugins.

Note the lack of Network Manager.

(Networking still works, though.)

My standard Kubuntu 10.04 installation works perfectly but now I'm trying the lighter xfce window manager. I can't find any gui tool to configure networks. Someone on the web talks about the gnome applets container but I don't want to use gnome. How to configure network in xfce?
