When I start my Ubuntu 20.04 normally, I get an (backlit) black screen.

When I hold Shift during startup, I can see the grub startup menu:

I can choose "advanced options" and then the recovery mode and it starts with a low-resolution and without internet.

I have purged all nvidia drivers in the hope that this would fix the issue. It didn't. What can I do?

What I've tried

nomodeset

When I replace "quiet splash" by "nomodeset" in the boot options, I get the following instead of a black screen:

I can also switch with Ctrl+Alt+F1-F7 and I see that something changes, but I cannot read anything.

Internet in Recovery mode

With this guide I could get internet in recovery mode. I could install another nvidia driver, but it didn't help :-(

Defect graphics card?

Could it be that the nvidia graphics card broke and the Intel "on-board" graphics chip still works?

How can I install protoc, the protobuf compiler to generate Java, on Ubuntu 16.04?

I would like to build and run Docker containers on Ubuntu 16.04 LTS. How do I install Docker?

I have changed a lot of defaults which programs should be used for which files, e.g. instead of using LibreOffice for CSV I use Sublime Text.

For TensorFlow I would like to install CUDA. How do I do that on Ubuntu 16.04?

I would like to install the latest nvidia driver (367.27) for my GeForce 940MX.

Why I want to switch

Currently, I have 361.42 installed from the official repositories. However, this one has problems with TensorFlow (issue 2810).

What I did

1. Download the latest driver from http://www.nvidia.com/Download/index.aspx
2. Close everything, log out, switch to console (Ctrl + Alt+F2)
3. Shut of lightdm (sudo service lightdm stop)
4. Execute the downloaded script (sudo sh NVIDIA-Linux-x86_64-367.27.run)

What I expected

I thought this would simply update the driver.

What happened

After accepting the EULA, I got an error. It asked me if I wanted to continue the installation or abort it. I aborted and had a look at the error message:

How I rolled back

After ignoring the warning and installing it, I didn't get any graphics. Just a black screen. So I undid the installation:

1. Press shift while startup
2. Go into a root shell
3. Make it writable by mount -o remount,rw / (- is ? and / is - in the american layout)
4. sh NVIDIA-Linux-x86_64-367.27.run --uninstall

For TensorFlow I would like to install cuda and CuDNN. How do I do that on Ubuntu 16.04?

I have Ubuntu MATE 14.10. Today, I accidentally removed the applet from the panel which lets me choose the WLAN network. How can I get it back?

(The same applet seems to have shown the battery status)

There are plenty of questions where people essentially want to know how to play their DVDs (How can I play encrypted DVD movies?, Lord of the Rings, Toy Story, another one).

Is there any way to know before you buy a DVD to know if it runs on your system?

Obviously, simply looking at the DVD does not help:

Is there any online service or another way to get to know if you can watch a DVD on your computer before buying it?

edit: Sometimes, Amazon customers give this information if it is not working. But I would also appreciate a "white list" of DVDs that do work.

I've added a white background to both images and applied GIMPs "Difference" filter to get this:

It is a very simple method how a diff could work, but I can imagine much better (and more complicated) ones.

Do you know a program which works for images like meld does for texts?

(If a program existed that could give a percentage (0% the same image - 100% the same image) I would also be interested in it, but I am looking for one that gives me visual hints where differences are.)

How can I find the line of corrupted characters (like �, ß, ø ...) in text files?

I am watching quite often DVDs in VLC on Ubuntu while surfing. As my screen isn't very big, I don't want to waste screen space. But I can't resize the window exactly to the size of the video. Changing the aspect ratio didn't help.

I have a project with lots of hidden folders / files in it. I want to create a zip-archive of it, but in the archive shouldn't be any hidden folders / files. If files in a hidden folder are not hidden, they should also not be included.

I know that I can create a zip archive of a directory like this:

zip -r zipfile.zip directory

I also know that I can exclude files with the -x option, so I thought this might work:

zip -r zipfile.zip directory -x .*

It didn't work. All hidden directories were still in the zip-file.

I know that I can check if the touchpad is active with

gconftool-2 --get /desktop/gnome/peripherals/touchpad/touchpad_enabled 

and I can set it disabled / enabled with

How can I use this to automatically deactivate my touchpad when a USB-mouse is connected and activate it again as soon as the USB-mouse disappears?

I am using Ubuntu 10.10 (Linux pc07 2.6.35-27-generic #48-Ubuntu SMP Tue Feb 22 20:25:46 UTC 2011 x86_64 GNU/Linux) and the default python package (Python 2.6.6).

I would like to install python-psyco to improve the performance of one of my scripts, but only python-psyco-doc is available for 64 bit. I tried a virtual machine, but the the performance boost is much less on the virtual machine than on a "real" installed 32-bit Ubuntu.

So my question is: How can I install a 32Bit Python with psyco on my 64Bit Ubuntu machine?

Installing the package python-dev solved the problem, but I still could not use psyco. Now I've installed a 32Bit Ubuntu System.
