I want Kate's tabs to behave as in almost all other tabbed programs I use:

• When I open a new window, it opens in a new instance, without duplicating tabs from other open windows
• When I close a tab in a window, it is only closed in that window (not across all windows)
• When I drag a tab out of the window, a new window with that tab is opened
• When I drag a tab out of the window to another window, the tab is moved to that other window

I do not seem to be alone in that (see reddit question here, KDE forums question here), but I have not found an answer yet. Is it straight up impossible? Because it's the reason I stopped using Kate previously, and I'd like to give it another try.

I'm on (K)ubuntu 22.04, using Kate 21.12.3.

Since I upgraded from Ubuntu 21.04 to 21.10, my screen doesn't turn back on when reawakening my desktop PC from sleep mode. I then have to perform a hard reset to get my PC into working order again.

I use xrandr to switch between a single and dual monitors, so I thought maybe that causes the issue. And indeed, when I set the display settings through the GUI (Settings -> Displays) instead of using xrandr, it works*, i.e. the display wakes up from sleep normally. NOT THE CASE ANYMORE, see edit.

However, as soon as I set the display settings with xrandr, I will be faced with a black screen when waking the PC back up from sleep mode.

I use xrandr, because I can't switch between dual and single displays using Super+P (options are "Mirror", "Join Displays", "External Only", and "Built-in Only", but all three latter options activate both displays). Therefore I'd like to keep using it or find an alternative.

*EDIT: It worked with a single display, but I still wanted to test it for dual displays. But while I was writing my question, an update to the nvidia drivers was released, so I thought that maybe that'll fix the whole thing. However, instead, now it doesn't work even with a single display anymore. Now sleep mode means hard reset. Removed the xrandr tag for that reason.

I'm using Ubuntu 20.04 and am working on performance optimisations of some CFD code. When timing my code for quick feedback as to whether some modification is beneficial, there's often quite large run-to-run variance, due to background processes kicking in.

Because the code is using all available threads, any one thread being burdened with background tasks causes all others to wait.

Now my question is, whether or not there is a quick and easy way to temporarily halt background/non-essential tasks and therefore put my system into a kind of benchmark mode. Bash scripts, packages, built-in options, all is welcome.

I recently asked this question, but both didn't get a reply and have more information. My goal is to get my keyboard (Sound Blaster Vanguard K08) fully working again. Currently, the macro keys only work if I put keyboard buttons/combinations on them, but not mouse buttons, and all media keys are dead.

However, when booting from the Ubuntu 19.10 Live USB stick, with which I installed my system, everything works perfectly fine.

How can I get back to that state? Any suggestions are welcome.

My hunch is, that my keyboard used to be recognised as keyboard+mouse or sth like that, because special and mouse related functions don't work anymore.

I'm using a Sound BlasterX Vanguard K08 keyboard, which features a couple extra keys (five macro keys, some media keys and a volume rocker). My OS is Ubuntu 19.10 (eoan). It used to work fine for a couple days since the install, but since today or yesterday, almost all extra keys have stopped working:

• Two of the five macro keys still work, three don't. The ones who don't work anymore are bound to mouse functions, btw: Left-, right- and middle click. Haven't yet tried to switch them around.
• The media keys and volume rocker don't work anymore.

showkey does not register any input for the keys that aren't working anymore. Not really sure what I changed. It possibly coincides with installing dconf-editor, but I only used that to make monitor-setup-related changes, nothing related to the keyboard.

I do not expect to be able to setup the macro keys in Ubuntu, as I can do that under Windows. When booting into Windows, btw, all keys still work just fine, so it's not a hardware issue.

I looked at the following, somewhat similar problems (and others, which are analogous to the ones below):

Media keys not registered: Similar, but doesn't have an answer yet.

Media play/pause & track prev/next stopped working after reboot: Solution didn't work for me, no change after applying the settings.

Media Keys not working on Ubuntu 17.10: Doesn't apply, showkey doesn't register input in my case.

External article "How to fix media keys not working on Linux": talks about playerctl, which wasn't necessary before and wouldn't solve the issue with macro keys.
