I've been trying to figure out this one for a few evenings now. I downloaded the 20.04 server installer, and tried to install it on a linux raid which I configured in the installer. This consistently failed.

I then jumped into a shell just after the installer started up, and manually created a linux raid (two disks / mirrored). The partitioning table of both /dev/sda and /dev/sdb is a grub / boot partition on /dev/sdX1 and a /dev/sdX2 partition which takes part in /dev/md0.

Once the linux raid is up and running, i jump back to the installer and try to install Ubuntu on the existing raid. This fails as well.

The error I get is this :

comparing device lists : expected ['/dev/sdb2', '/dev/sdb2'] found: ['/dev/sdb2', '/dev/sda2']

I don't get that! Why does the installer expect that the linux raid should be made up of 2 x /dev/sdb2?

During some attempts, I've also seen expected ['/dev/sda2', '/dev/sda2']. It appears that the installer "randomly" picks a single partition that it expects to see twice - but that's just an observation (or speculation).

No matter how I try to install Ubuntu 20.04 on a linux raid, it fails. A regular install goes just fine.

I'm considering to buy a Lenovo ThinkPad E470 which I most likely will run Ubuntu 16.04 on. Is this machine "plug and play" with Ubuntu 16.04, or does it require any kind of configuration adventures? I do see that it has been certified for Ubuntu, but I'd like to hear if anyone has hands on experience with this machine.

Questions

  1. The Ubuntu Hardware Certification site mentions Hibernation as not working. Anyone got experience with this?
  2. If you plugin in a HDMI cable for an external monitor, can you then close the LID and use the external monitor only? I've had numerous battles with Ubuntu going into hibernation when closing the lid, regardless of battery/hibernation settings.
  3. Does wireless and cabled network work out of the box?

I've got a computer which I use at a couple of different sites, and I've got differen monitors at those sites. What I've done is that I've ceated different xorg.conf files for each of these sites.

Now, I've created a script which queries the nvidia driver for connected monitors, and based on those I apply the right xorg.conf file. However, I'd like this process to take place automatically during startup. However, I can't really get things to work.

I've been trying with Upstart, and created the following monitors.conf file in /etc/init:

description "configure monitors"

start on starting gdm
task
setuid root
exec /etc/X11/monitors.sh

I've read that start on starting gdm is the right way to run a script just before X11 is about to start. I need to run the script just before X11 to have X11 to pick up the right X11 .conf file. However, nothing really happens?
