I have Ubuntu 22.04 still installed on one partition and I recently installed Ubuntu 24.04 on another partition.

  • I've been using Thunderbird happily for a long time, most recently version 115.13.0 on my Ubuntu 22.04 partition.
  • I installed Thunderbird on the new 24.04 partition too, version 128.0esr. It correctly reads my emails (through imap), but it cannot send emails, save drafts or mark emails as read on the server.

So Thunderbird 115 works perfectly but Thunderbird 128 doesn't on the same GMail account (same problem with another non-GMail account). I checked the smtp settings carefully, they are identical.

It's possible I made a mistake, but I'm at a loss about what is going wrong. How can I diagnose and solve this problem?

I would like to collect all the pictures from the various Ubuntu wallpapers together with their appropriate credits/license. I found how to get the packages thanks to this question and I found where to find the copyright info thanks to this one. Apparently the files are installed in /usr/share/backgrounds/ and the filenames seem to always include the author's name.

However I struggle to with the copyright file /usr/share/doc/<package id>/copyright: it's a very long file with many filenames and authors sorted by license type, but it contains a lot more than the files I can see in the directory (why?), and at first sight it doesn't contain all the files in the dir (at least when I test with grep).

Basically I just want to make sure that the proper author and license are matched with the corresponding picture. Any advice how to interpret this file, or another more convenient source where I could find this info?

I would like to disable the keyboard backlight on a Dell Latitude E5570.

According to the official documentation this should be possible by selecting "disable" for the corresponding BIOS parameter. I did this several times but the BIOS setting automatically goes back on every time I boot to Ubuntu.

I found these old bug reports which appear to be related, but I don't know if these still apply for 20.04:

Any advice?

The ownCloud documentation mentions a command line client owncloudcmd which is supposed to be installed as part of the ownCloud Client package.

I have the owncloud-client package from the official repositories installed on Ubuntu 18.04 (version 2.4.1). The GUI client works but I cannot find this owncloudcmd executable.

Does anybody know why the Ubuntu package doesn't contain owncloudcmd, and how I can install it?

I just replaced the hard drive on my desktop with an SSD HD. Ubuntu installer doesn't find it, although when I run Ubuntu from the live CD:

  • the HD is detected in GParted, where I was able to create and format partitions.
  • It's detected by the Ubuntu disks utility as well, and the partitions can be mounted, but when I tried to write a file to it it didn't work

  • fdisk /dev/sda gives this:

I tried to change the BIOS SATA parameters to ACHI and tried a few other settings (not sure what that means but saw it might be related), it didn't help.

The HD is not new, it was previously used as RAID in another computer. I don't know how this works so I have no idea if that matters?

After installing it at home without any problem, I'm trying to install Ubuntu One at work (Ubuntu 12.04, must use proxy). Apparently it can not connect to the server: I can't sign in of course, can't use the "forgotten password" form either (address not recognized), and if I open the dialog to create an account I get a message "There was a problem downloading the captcha, reloading...".

I tried installing ubuntuone-client-proxy: Ubuntu One behind a proxy, how to make it work?

and resinstalling the certificates: https://one.ubuntu.com/help/faq/why-am-i-getting-an-the-authentication-failed-error-on-windows-225/

... without any success.

What am I doing wrong?
