I installed Ubuntu 24.04 with Gnome / Wayland recently and installed XFCE additionally with lightdm. When checking my graphics I get

So, the Ubuntu XFCE session still uses Xwayland while the Xubuntu session is a pure x11 session. Is there any way to get rid of Xwayland or is it ok to just leave it? Is there any drawback when using Ubuntu with XFCE compared to Xubuntu?

After hunting down some ethernet issues since last autumn I think I narrowed it down finally to a driver / kernel issue.

When surfing with my onboard REALTEK ethernet ( Mobo: MSI model: H81M-E34 (MS-7817) v: 3.0, BIOS: American Megatrends v: 17.5 date: 03/30/2015) websites sporadically load only after 5 or even 10 seconds as the DNS response sometimes take 5 or more seconds. I installed wireshark and saw that this is due to timeouts (DNS or TCP). When using an external USB ethernet adapter it's working fine, so my network configuration is fine.

When using Manjaro or an Ubuntu 20.04 live image I'm getting the same problems. However, when using a Debian Buster image no such issues occur. With Debian I haven't tested it extensively, but but while using it it was fine. I also switched from Buster to Ubuntu 20.04 and didn't recognize such issues with Debian Buster before, so this is all consistent.

As an solution I just could use the external adapter of course, but it would be nicer if I get the internal ethernet working again.

Does anyone else oberve similar issues with the Realtek 8169 driver in more recent kernels and would it help to install the dkms-8168 driver? I haven't done this yet, cause I read the people didn't have internet after installing and even after purging the driver. Or should I use a more recent kernel?

Edit: Must be a driver problem. The UGREEN ASIX AX88179 is constantly disconnecting on one of my ports (see below). I ordered an ANKER dongle wich works stable on both ports.

I ordered a UGREEN ASIX AX88179 USB 3 ethernet dongle and I'm having some issues with it: I tested it on an USB 2 port and there the dongle seems to work fine. On the back I tested it on two USB 3 ports. On one of the ports the network is constantly diconnecting and reconnecting. The journal entry looks like this:

On the USB 3 port next to the one from above the connection is much more stable and it lost connection only once (which of course is also not acceptable).

The driver is part of the kernel and the device should work without any issues. However when searching the web there are more people having similar issues with USB3 (also on Windows or Mac). I can exchnage the dongle and just get another one which works. Can you recommend something? Is realtek for example "the better" firmware?

I also don't understand why there's such a big difference between the two USB3 ports. I copied a 3GB several times to a USB Stick connected to the "bad" USB port and checked the sha sum. It's working fine, so I guess the port is not the problem.

since last autumn I'm struggeling to find what's wrong with my network configuration on Ubuntustudio 20.04 which is basically a Ubuntu 20.04.

I installed from scratch last autumn with the official Ubuntustudio 20.04 iso.

The strange thing is that my resolv.conf links to ../run/resolvconf/resolv.conf

    /etc/resolv.conf

However, in the point release version 20.04.1 it obviously points to ../run/systemd/resolve/stub-resolv.conf.

The content in ../run/resolvconf/resolv.conf is

I'm having another resolv.conf file in /run/systemd/resolve with exactly the same content. The time stamps of both files are different though: The file in ../run/resolvconf has the time stamp of the time when I switched on my machine. The file in /run/systemd/resolve/ has a time stamp which is 30 min old.

In the folder /run/systemd/resolve/ there's also a stub-resolv.conf file with content:

Does this all make sense and can somebody clearify this? Could this be the cause of my DNS issues? Very sporadically the DNS lookup in Firefox takes 5 s or more. This happens about 20 time per day or more, but not always. When I tell Firefox to use DNS over HTTPS all is fine.

When I use dig in the terminal this also works most of the time, but sometimes there's a delay of several setting until I get any output. The DNS lookup times in this case are however also short on the order of 20 ms.

I opened another thread here some weeks ago Internet sites are loading slowly sometimes with Firefox and Chromium.

The solution helped to improve the loading speed in general, but I still have the (minor) issue that sporadically websites take some seconds to start loading. In chromium I then see the message "Resolve Host" (Host auflösen in German) on the left bottom. That's why I think it could be due a DNS issue, but all tests we did in the other thread show that everything seems to be fine. I tried the Ubuntustudio live image and it seems to work without issues there, although I only could test it with Firefox which is not showing me that message.

My PC is connected via LAN to a Fritzbox repeater (1750E) and that one is connected by WLAN to another one which finally connects to the Fritzbox by WLAN. All routers are meshed and all my other devices works fine.

The issue occurs more often after diretly starting the PC. If website A has problems with resolving the host name and it finally loads after some seconds, the second time I load the site it works immediately which may be points to a DNS cache issue (?). I even get it sometimes when opening my router fritz.box site.

i'm on Ubuntustudio 20.4 and i'm using grsync to backup my data. This was working fine since I installed Ubuntu, but now grsync takes over 30s to start. I tried via the terminal and from the start menu with the same long loading time. I installed appmenu-gtk2-module as suggested here:

but there's no improvement. Also Chromium is starting quite slowly when starting it the first time after a boot. When starting it a second time it comes up fast. However Grsync starts always slow and this problem started maybe some weeks ago (was not using grsync for some time). I figured out that it basically affects all QT apps.

When I execute it I'll get 1500 in the beginning, but the second time I get 1492, which seems to be the better value. Maybe this explains why I get issues sometimes when I first try to load a page. Where can I set MTU to 1492 permanently?

I'm on Linux since 2014 with KXStudio and went to Debian after a while. Now I'm back on Ubuntu (Studio) and I'm really happy how smooth everything works. I got a system crash two months ago with Debian and I don't know the reason. After I installed Ubuntustudio I had no problems, but today there was a 30s delay when rebooting my machine. In the journal I have some entries with the relevant delay (see below). Am I right that the delay is due to a network error?

Or is there any other log file I can check to see what caused that gap? When the system paused I saw the message from fsck on the screen that some things on sda1 got cleaned. I just want to make sure that I don't have an issue with my SSD or so. On the other hand I got this messages also on 11.9. with no delay (see at the bottom).
