my ubuntu 20.04 machine has been periodically freezing over the past several weeks. When I hold the power button down and power off the machine and restart, looking at /var/log/syslog, the last entry prior to freezing is as follows:

I saw this answer, but there was no mention of the machine freezing, and some said the error is best ignored.

Am I correct that my machine freezes as a result of this error?

I went to install a bunch of stuff using pip (which I had not used in awhile) and I get a message telling me I should upgrade my version of pip. I tried a few things, and then came across this doc, which I followed with no problem.

But, when I tried to use pip, as in `pip show pyserial' I got an error:

$ pip show pyserial
bash: /usr/bin/pip: No such file or directory

and I then discovered pip is not installed there...

$ which pip
/usr/local/bin/pip

any way to install in the correct place, or point the pip command to /usr/local/bin/pip?

I am trying to install bugzilla on my home server running 16.04. I am using the documentation and I got up the the 2nd checksetup phase, but am having an issue in step 3.1.11. Test Server.

When running the testserver.pl script I get the following error:

$ sudo perl testserver.pl http://localhost/bugzilla

Googling around, I found a couple of links, beginning with this one. That link instructs to look at a couple of lines in the testserver.pl script:

It says to run each of the ps commands manually in the shell and look at the output. Sure enough, httpd|apache does not return anything. Somewhere on that page there is some discussion of a truncated name:

It looks to me like it's the truncation of the names that is causing the
problem? Note it's '/usr/sbin/apach' which is returned
I also note that /usr/sbin/apach sometimes gets a GID of 33 sometimes of 0

my ps output also shows /usr/sbin/apach, but I did not see any instructions as to what change to make.

The other link I found was an askubuntu question. That link seemed mainly concerned with the "AllowOverride" value, which I believe in my case is correct. As per the instructions, I created a file /etc/apache2/sites-available/bugzilla.conf :

  AddHandler cgi-script .cgi
  Options +ExecCGI
  DirectoryIndex index.cgi index.html
  AllowOverride All

in my local config, for webserver group I have: $webservergroup = 'www-data';

One other thing that may or may not be a factor; one of the perl packages was not found during the installation.

E: Package 'apache2-mpm-prefork' has no installation candidate

Update I resolved this issue by removing/purging apache2 and re-installing. All was good after that.

I'm running ubuntu 16.04 on a dell xps 13, and I had java eclipse running ok. I did a mercurial commit from the command line, and I had some conflicts related to the eclipse metadata files.

I managed to get the commit taken care of, but I'm honestly not sure what I did to the project metadata files.

I was not able to get my web project started, so I re-set all the build paths, runtime environments, new server and so on.

Then, the server just wouldn't start...no error, just totally non-responsive.

Then I tried to create a little helloworld class, just to see if I could get something to run, and creating the new class took forever...it hung with the revolving wheel.

I googled around, and looked in workspace-dir/.metadata/.log and saw this:

I deleted the eclipse folder, and reinstalled. Now having the same problem when trying to cfeate a simple project from scrath.

I also deleted the ~/.eclipse folder, all workspace folders and tried again, having the same behavior

I recently did a clean install of Windows 10 with the intention of dual booting Ubuntu.

Unfortunately, I am now unable to boot using the Live USB. I recreated the USB using the Universal Usb Installer (v15.10)

In BIOS, I go in and set the boot priority to UEFI: <name of usb manufactruer> but then, it just boots into Windows.

My bios is:

BIOS: Version/Date American Megatrends Inc. 1301, 12/20/2013
Processor: Intel(R) Core(TM) i7-4770K CP  @ 3.50GHz, 3501 Mhz, 4 Core(s), 8 

I have an ASUS Mobo, if that helps. I was able to boot into USB prior to installing Windows, so inclined to believe that the win install changed some BIOS setting.

Fast startup, Hibernate and Sleep are all checked off in the Power settings.

the other day I tried to upgrade my ubuntu 14.04 desktop machine (dual booted with win 10) to ubuntu 15.10. I did do-release-upgrade from the command line.

The process went along for about 15 mins, but then it spit out a message saying the process halted because there were too many errors.

I tried to shut down the machine, but it hung. So, I hit the reset switch, got thru BIOS, selected ubuntu from the grub menu and then saw something similar to this:

kernel panic not syncing: attmpted to kill init! exit code

I saw this q which says to boot from the live CD and run fsck, but I'm wondering if I was trying to upgrade anyway if it wouldn't be better to just install from the live disk.

Will that overwrite my previous ubuntu install and leave the windows install as is? Also, will booting with a boot repair disk help?

Was discussing my woes dual booting win10 and ubuntu on a new dell xps 13 9350 in this q, and thought this issue merited its own question.

what I have done so far

• did a clean install of win 10 with sata config set to ahci in bios
• disabled fast startup and hibernate in win 10
• did a shrink volume in win, creating about 140gb of unallocated space
• booted from the uefi usb drive with the ubuntu iso installed on it
• selected "try ubuntu"
• opened gparted, and was only able to see the 29gb usb drive where the install iso is located
• hit the install ubuntu icon
• selected "install alongside windows boot manager"
• install process went normally from there.

But now, when I boot into the system it just goes to win10. There is no grub menu, and no ubuntu option in bios.

The system contains a samsung ssd nvme (256gb). A couple of other questions have mentioned that as a possible issue.

I just got a new dell laptop with win10 installed. I want to dual boot with ubuntu (have done that on a couple of desktop machines) but I'm running into a problem.

I'm using this guide

I am able to boot into the usb with the installation iso no problem, I select "try ubuntu" and that is all ok.

I hit install ubuntu, and when I get to the 'installation type' section, the options are all blank.

In gparted, the only visible drive is the 8gb usb drive that contains the installation iso, the system drive is not visible.

The tutorial says I should be given the option of installing alongside windows and sizing the partition, but there is nothing available in that "installation type" dialog.

I found this doc and have been going thru it. I was not able to determine how to disable the intel smart response technology.

Also, as per the tutorial in the link above, I shrunk the volume in disk management in win 10. So I now have a smaller windows partition and half the drive unallocated. Not sure if that is a problem or not.

I also tried creating a usb installer from the 14.04.3 release, same result. Used the utility linked to in the answer below. Same result.

Do the options shown here look ok as per the answers/comments below?

I changed the sata config mode to ahci, that allowed me to install ubuntu and boot into it, but I was not able to boot back into windows.

I then downloaded a win10 iso, and did a clean install with the bios set to ahci. (had to download wifi driver)

I then tried to install ubuntu. In gparted, I still only saw the usb drive, but during the ubuntu install I had the option to "install alongside windows boot manager".

The install process went forward ok, but when I went to restart, I just went straight to windows, there was no grub menu.

I am following along in the docs for installing a new hard drive (the drives are formatted and have data, I'm trying to set up in /etc/fstab)

I'm able to mount normally with

sudo mount /dev/sdb1 /media/photos

when trying to enter into /etc/fstab like so:

/dev/sdb1       /media/photos vfat    defaults 0 0

I get this:

~$ sudo mount -a

I tried several variations, like ext3, some of the other options listed in the docs, chaning permissions of the mount point, but always got the same error.

I should also mention this machine is dual booted with win8 and the partitions were created in windows, quite some time ago. (have actually re-installed the OS, both win and ubuntu several times and used these data drives)

I have a linux home server where I am developing some webapps, mainly written in java. I would like these apps to be able to send email thru my isp using my yahoo email accounts. (I have a paid small business email acct).

Is it best to use something like ssmpt, or is postfix or sendmail a better option? Is sendmail used when your server is the ssmtp server, or can I use it when I pass an email along to my yahoo acct for sending?

I installed the mysql-server from the repositories, and wanted to change the datadir to a custom location. With the datadir set to /var/lib/mysql I was able to start the server, but to the new location I get an error.

ERROR 2002 (HY000): Can't connect to local MySQL server through socket '/var/run/mysqld/mysqld.sock' (2)

Here are the changes to my.cnf:

user            = mysql
pid-file        = /var/run/mysqld/mysqld.pid
socket          = /var/run/mysqld/mysqld.sock
port            = 3306
basedir         = /usr
datadir         = /media/db2/mysql
tmpdir          = /tmp
lc-messages-dir = /usr/share/mysql
skip-external-locking

I was searching this and other sites, came across this link and changed my /etc/apparmor.d/usr.sbin.mysqld file. Here are the relevant changes

#  /var/lib/mysql/ r,
#  /var/lib/mysql/** rwk,
  /media/db2/mysql/ r,
  /media/db2/mysql/** rwk,

I then was able to restart the mysql service with

sudo service mysql restart

but was not able to open up mysql with

mysql -u root -p

I got another error similar to the above. So I searched some more and copied the files from /var/lib/mysql to my new dir.

Now when I try to restart mysql it just hangs. The log file in /var/log/mysql/error.log shows:

I have a recent install of ubuntu server (all command line) and at the time of the install I was not connected to the internet.

when entering sudo apt-get update I get a bunch of messages saying failed to fetch repos.

I am unable to ping google, askubuntu, or any other site

sudo lshw -class network

indicates both eth0 and eth1 are disabled.

ifup eth0 

results in

ignoring unknown interface eth0=eth0

is there a way to test the connection from cable modem to machine is ok? (I checked a few times and believe my cable/connections are ok, but I can check again)

I'm adding 4 HD's to my new server build (ubuntu 12.10) and the sys drive is listed as /dev/sdb. I wasn't able to find in the mobo manuals which sata port is first in line. The machine boots up ok, but I was unsure if the order (/dev/sda, /dev/sdb) makes a difference.

I tried installing mysql server a couple of times and I'm having problems. First of all, when I install it gives me a message that it's setting up and it just hangs. I can't ctl + c out of it, so I reboot the server and try to log into the db with

sudo mysql -u root -p

I enter my password and then get

ERROR 2002 (HY000): Can't connect to local MySQL server through socket '/var/run/mysqld/mysqld.sock' (2)

I restart the server:

$ sudo /etc/init.d/mysql start
Rather than invoking init scripts through /etc/init.d, use the service(8)
utility, e.g. service mysql start

Since the script you are attempting to invoke has been converted to an
Upstart job, you may also use the start(8) utility, e.g. start mysql

I try this:

Any ideas? On my other machines installing mysql has been a snap, not sure what the problem is here.
