I'v just installed a fresh Ubuntu 22.04 on a Dell latitude 5480. Except for upgrading the packages, I haven't done anything - not even changing the driver (default is xorg).

When the screen is locked, e.g. after sleep or just lock (super+l), I type the correct password, it takes ~6 seconds to unlock.

Played with it a bit and found something strange: If I type a wrong password, I get the same 6 seconds delay (without the unlocking of course), but if I now enter the correct password, the unlock is immediate.

Something is causing the delay for the first time, regardless of the correctness of the password...

Any idea how to make the unlock faster? As I said before, the laptop is updated with the latest packages (sudo apt update + upgrade).

On Ubuntu 19.10, when closing the lid, the laptop goes into sleep.

When opening the lid, the power is resumed and immediately seeing the screen to choose the user. After choosing the user and typing the password, a fresh session is created - not the expected return from sleep behavior.

This means that somehow a logout was performed, which is strange.

When pressing the power button (manual sleep), which probably does the same sleep sequence, everything works correctly. After the sleep happens, I can close and open the lid or just press again on the power button and everything works correctly. I immediately see the password option and the session is shown where I left off.

I read info on the subject, like playing with the grub scsi_mod.scan=sync but nothing worked and didn't find explanation regarding the difference in behavior between manual suspend and closing the lid.

I understand that some think this question is duplicate to How to disable account logoff when closing lid of laptop. The difference is the settings, the OS version and problem description. My setting is already set to sleep for lid closed. The potential dup question is set to logoff.

I've enabled Chrome native notifications:

chrome://flags/#enable-native-notifications

When I get an web notification, it shows for a second on the top side and also in Ubuntu's notifications area (click on the clock or super+v).

The problem is that it disappears even though I didn't "handle" it. I didn't click on it.

This causes me to lose track of pending stuff, like messages from co-workers.

Any idea how to keep the web notifications from disappearing?

When getting notifications while not on the computer, they show up and removed after a few seconds, but I didn't see them.

They are then left in the notification list (super+v or click the clock).

The issue is that the top clock doesn't show any indication that there are missing notification.

Any idea how to show an indication that there pending/missed notifications?

Update [Aug 28 2019]: Recently, I noticed that web notifications "as native" are working but disappearing without being consumed. If I'm fast enough to click them while appearing, they send me to the correct tab/webapp. If a few seconds pass, without doing anything,the notification disappears.

Original question:

I'm trying to make chrome notification show as native notifications on Ubuntu 18.04 (which UI is based on Gnome).

I tried enabling enable-native-notifications, but it didn't work. See screencap below.

I tried searching Q&Aa like this and this, but they discusses old versions of Ubuntu.

Any idea how to make chrome notifications appear as native ones on Ubuntu 18.04? Thanks.

* BTW, I understand that there's a bit of a problem regarding synchronization between browser apps vs. native functionality, meaning, had this feature worked, if I would have consumed a message on the browser's app, would it disappear from the native notifications panel?

Recently, Ubuntu change the UI back to GNOME.

Back on 16.04, when the UI was Unity, in order to change the application switcher, I just needed to install Compiz Config System Manager (ccsm), select another application switcher and disable the keyboard switching for Unity (in ccsm as well).

In 17.10 and 18.04, where GNOME is used instead of Unity, I can enable a different application switcher on ccsm but GNOME's application switcher still kicks in and don't see an option to disable it.

Any idea how to replace the application switcher on Ubuntu versions 17.10 and 18.04?

I'm trying to change the value "Left Maximize" to <Control><Super>Left, succeeding in grabbing the key combination.

But after a second, the value returns to the previous key combination. See screencap below.

What's preventing me from changing the key combination and how can I bypass it? Thanks.

UPDATE: It seems that only shortcuts with the <super> key are being reverted back to default. (Changed the question's title)

About a week and a half ago, I updated/upgraded my 16.04 using sudo apt upgrade.

Since then, every time the laptop resumes from sleep, I get a strange border around all popup dialogs.

Any idea how to prevent it?

I tried updating/upgrading again but the problem continues.

There's a great feature in Notepad++, that you can open several new tab/editor, like temp editors and when closing the whole editor app, it doesn't ask to save the new unsaved tabs. The app knows to restore the app next time with all the temp tabs.

This feature is great when trying to figure out a problem and you want to paste several log snippets. You don't want to save them as files and you don't want to loose them if you need to restart (power outage or battery drain).

So, is there a Linux app that has this feature?

So far I've tried geany, gedit and kedit and couldn't find this feature in them.

When the laptop is sleeping and connected to the docking station (lid closed), I click the dock's external power button.

From the physical indication lights I see that the laptop awakens but see nothing in the external monitor.

I try super+p, but nothing happens (works when the screen isn't locked).

I "blindly" type the password, then super+p, then see the screen on the external monitor already unlocked.

Is there a way to switch to external monitor when the screen is locked? Thanks.

I changed the application switcher from unity's to Static Application switcher, using CompixConfig. See screenshot below.

I love it!!! but have 1 problem - the preview of the windows is a bit small.

How to remove Ubuntu One Unity indicator from the top panel in Ubuntu 12.04?

There isn't even a quit button.

I checked in the startup apps an no Ubuntu One there.

I run a java program (smartgit for example). What I see in the launcher is just a question mark.

Marking the "Keep in Launcher" doesn't open the app. It just blinks for several seconds and stops blinking (no app is launched).

I even created a launcher file (.desktop) and also did not work.

I followed this but did not help. (Defined StartupWMClass in the launcher file)

It seems that the side bar icon does not even point to the launcher file, because after enabling the Terminal, the terminal is shown when running from the command line or nautilus but not when running from the launcher.

I would like in Unity, to see a preview of the open windows of a specific application. Just like Linux DockbarX (or windows 7).

Motivation example: When I have several windows open of the same browser, I would like to navigate to the correct one. Alt+Tab gives all the windows and not just the browser - is too much noise.

DockbarX gives the option to hover over the applications in the its launcher and it pops a preview of all open windows of that specific application.

How do I do this in Unity?

After not using the computer for a few hours, I return and see a black/blank screen. I see the mouse cursor. It responds to movements and it changes state as if the windows are there (changing to text or 'link thumb').

But all I see is a black screen. Anyone knows anything about this?

When selecting a file in Nautilus, I would like to see the context options of the file (mouse right click) using the keyboard and not the mouse.

Example, when i iterate over the list of files in a folder with the arrows, and one of the files is an archive, I would like to extract the file here without the need to go to the mouse.

It is MUCH healthier to work with the keyboard.

I'd like to add set a functionality to the pair fn+right/left to be like in Mac - 'home' and 'end'. I don't mean to replace the 'home' and 'end' buttons - just adding another 'home'/'end' keys. The advantage is in writing/modifying text. I use the arrows a lot, and I also use the home and end buttons, but why jump to a whole new button? My left hand is already near the fn (function) key - ready to press control or shift.

How do I set this?

I'm using a laptop and connecting it to an external monitor. After disconnecting from the external monitor, the list of windows (pressing and holding Alt+Tab) is not centered. It is located in a place as if the external monitor is still connected (bottom right instead of center)

Has anyone else experienced this? How can I fix it? If it helps, I have a macbook pro 6,2 and the nvidia driver.
