I need python-gtk2 and python-glade-2 for an old app, but when I run dpkg -i I get this (translated), stating I miss python ???

Please tell me what is wrong there. I did it OK some days ago on a debian11 and I just had to run

sudo apt -f install

to fix the problem. Instead, when I apt -f install here, ubuntu wants to remove the 2 packages instead of fixing the installation.

I also tried to add this action to ~/.local/share/applications/rhythmbox.desktop but it is unsuccessful (with an additional dedicated Quit section exec=rhythmbox-client --quit and name=Quit plus Quit; action in Actions line) with weird side effect*.

Once Rhythmbox is running, eventually reduced, even I have previously set the launcher icon to "Keep in launcher", then the icon looses the focus indicator (small arrow on the right) as intended, and there is no more a way to quit Rhythmbox with a simple right-click. The ~Active window indicator~ (small arrow on the left) although remains, at least until I Alt+F4 or click the Close window button when the Rhythmbox is opened. When I want to quit Rhythmbox I first have open the window and then only I can Ctrl+W, Menu File/Close, so the single way to stop is from the application menu which is heavy boring.

*[EDIT]: new Quit, Close, Exit or Stop actions won't show a new item in icon context menu, as if they were reserved keywords all tied to the default Quit action we have for all other active application icons. Although, I reached to have a new item displayed for exec=... --quit as long I give another name, e.g. "Die" or something in my own language, then only I have a way to quick quit when the default Quit item disappeared.

Whenever I reach to add a working Quit action, then I get a several seconds hourglass in Unity launcher and syslog reports things like:

Sometimes I have to select the action twice so that it executes: first time the focus arrow disppears, second one the app stops. It seems like the icon is no more bounded to the running application, although rhythmbox-client is stated to "controls a running instance of rhythmbox" according to the manual. Instead, the action seems to target the icon itself, just killing the window and not ending the app... sorry for my wording, I'm not native englih speaker.

Also I don't understand how English strings in the file map to translated items in the icon menu.

Please could you tell me advises to workaround this locked behaviour, I'm out of imagination. Many thanks in advance.

For my Dell Wireless 1397 WLAN Mini-Card [1028:000c], the open source driver makes DL rate stuck to 2Mb/s (~240kB/s) when UL reaches 8/10 Mb/s, any channel. The broadcom driver reaches these 8/10Mb/s both for UL & DL for channel 1-11, but unfortunately I can't connect to channels 12-13 APs. I enabled proposed repos so that I can get the latest linux-firmware-nonfree 1.14ubuntu3 and can enable latest bcmwl-kernel-source 6.30.223.271+bdco, with no success. The opensource driver seems to be called b43-pci-bridge, when the proprietary seems to be called wl.

. [EDIT] I gave up and gave the drive back to my friend. Resetting the MaxLBA field with SeaChest_Configure -d /dev/sg2 --setMaxLBA 1481663420 failed. Maybe I could have had success help with resetting the smart partition on the drive with a serial connection, but I had no serial adapter at the moment, I was fed up, and some sites say this way works only with 7000.11 drives (doesn't work for 7200.12). I regularly update my Trusty 3.13 kernel on Updates Manager notifications. As I do I such case, I remove the n-2 kernel just before upgrading so that my system remains with 2 kernel releases once the upgrade is done.

On last upgrade from 3.13.0-87 to 3.13.0-88, Updates Manager asked for reboot as usual, but once logged back in with -88, Update Manager asked again to reboot. Please, why ?

Warned by Enigmail they soon won't support gnupg and switch to gnupg2 I installed the later.

Now trying to remove gnupg, I see a bunch of software will be removed as a consequence:

Having problems with ACL in Trusty desktop version, I want to know if the acl mount option is really mandatory for an ext4 partition?

Since with or without this option, setfacl never complains support is missing, I wonder if setting the option when it is not mandatory anymore would cause issues?

I need to add a group of users to my system. I read the adduser and addgroup manpages and the question here about "users" and "system users".

I need clarification with groups and system groups, because as far as I know, groups can't login, so the "can't login" particularity of system users does not seem to make sense for groups.

I'd like to use an external usb soundcard with my ubuntu 13.04 for musician purpose. Unfortunately the application requires 48 kHz and jackd to be used, but whenever I select the external souncard in qjackctl I see jackd falls back from 48 to 44,1kHz. Please is there a way to do that? Or at least a way to check/set the sample rate in the genuine ubuntu sound system, just to verify the card is 48k capable. Thank you. In Saucy salamander I need to run a script each time I login then each time I unlock the session after manual lock or auto sleep. I can't use "Startup Application" for that because it wouldn't trigger on unlock.

Running raring 13.04 I meet a strange behaviour (non-blocking). When I launch a home subfolder (e.g. Music) from the nemo launcher, the windows opens fine but I always get the hourglass pointer for 15s, after which the pointer becomes normal, whether I keep the window opened or I close it before the 15s laptime.

I don't use cinnamon (not installed), just nemo v1.7.2 from synaptic/software center.

When I run nemo Music from a terminal or from the Alt+F2 prompt, I don't get this hourglass. I don't get it neither when I just left-click the nemo parent icon. I don't get this behaviour neither with LibreOffice icon sub-items.

I tried to specify the full path in ~/.local/share/applications/nemo.desktop (Exec=nemo /home/me/Music) with no change in behaviour.

Please, what does make this to happen?

Is there any GUI software that can explore a tree and find all files with size greater than some amount? Neither Nautilus nor Nemo seem to be able to do this. In my memory, I could do this with PC-Tools in DOS 3.0.

I have an old nvidia card not supported anymore (Ti4200Go agp 8x). The nouveau driver has problems drawing the cursor and shows ugly pictures on the screen. How do I try the vesa driver? I'm sad the vesa won't display the full 1680x1050 native resolution, but at least the laptop will be usable.
