When Ubuntu is run on a laptop, the brightness control allows to simply define the desired level of brightness. This control is not available on a desktop, probably because energy consumption is not considered a problem there.

However, I find it extremely convenient to be able to change the brightness anywhere, if only to reduce eyestrain. I can't find a way to configure Ubuntu to display this control on a desktop.

There is a ton of Gnome Extensions and other things allowing to do something similar, all with their limitations, and extra complexity.

Isn't there a way to force Ubuntu to display the brightness control on a desktop ?

In Ubuntu 20.04, on the desktop, there is a number of actions I wish I could do, such as, by order of importance :

• use keyboard shortcuts such as select all, copy / paste.
• use drag & drop with icons
• deactivate the "mouse over" highlight, and restrict the clicking area to only the icon, not the surrounding square

To put it simply, I'd like to have the exact same features as offered by the desktop of Ubuntu 18.04 (probably related to a specific version of GNOME, and not Ubuntu itself).

Am I missing something obvious here? I actually see no reason why those actions are removed or deactivated on the desktop, since they all work in any Nautilus window.

After the recent update to Ubuntu 17.10 and the switch to Gnome, Tint2 still runs but does not show all windows. Specifically, terminal windows do not appear (bot not limited to terminal).

Here is a screenshot, where my current Firefox window is visible but not my terminal.

I've been through all settings of Tint2 without finding any suitable change. The same behavior happens on another computer. If I run a session with Unity instead of Gnome, tint2 works as expected (all windows appear).

Is this a standard behavior ? Is there any known fix ?
