I Uninstalled gnome keyring with sudo apt autoremove gnome-keyring. Then I restarted my machine. Now when I enter the password, the login screen comes back again. It basically doesn't let me log in. What are my options right now?
Chani's questions
I have a Thinkpad 470 and I am running Ubuntu 16.04 LTS on it. I don't like to keep the keyboard backlight on during daytime because I want to save battery among other things. What I have noticed is that the backlight turns itself on even if it is woken up from a state where the screen was dimmed completely or system had gone to sleep due to inactivity. The issue is that in day time or in presence of bright lights I am unable to see the backlight is on, thus I don't switch it off and this drains the battery. I want to be able to control this setting. How do I do this?
After searching a bit in the following location :
/sys/class/leds/tpacpi::kbd_backlight
I found the following files:
rgh@arrakis:/sys/class/leds/tpacpi::kbd_backlight$ ls
brightness brightness_hw_changed device max_brightness
power subsystem trigger uevent
From among these, the file trigger contains the following items inside:
[none] rfkill-any kbd-scrolllock kbd-numlock kbd-capslock kbd-kanalock
kbd-shiftlock kbd-altgrlock kbd-ctrllock kbd-altlock kbd-shiftllock

I am guessing something here needs to be removed to get the behaviour I am looking for? Can you please tell me if I am correct? How to get this done?
I just installed gcc 7 in a arbitrary folder. I am able to compile using the full path to bin folder of my new gcc 7 installation, but when I try to run my program, it complains of missing libs. How must I fix this? I must provide the lib files path somehow? How to do this?
I currently have 3 Ubuntu installations (one 32 bit 14.04, one 32 bit 14.10 and a 64 bit 14.10) and a windows7 installed on my system.
I want just one windows7 installation and one 64 bit 14.10 Ubuntu on my system. However the currently installed 64 bit 14.10 Ubuntu is on a small drive and I want it removed and install it on a larger drive.
So, my question is, armed with a bootable USB loaded with Ubuntu 14.10 64 bit, how do I go about erasing the previous 3 Ubuntu installations and install a fresh one on my desired drive?
I know questions that sound like this one have been asked before, but none of the "solutions" are working for me. I am using Gnome Classic option.
- I could not find any extension that does what I want.
- I could not find any entry for
gnome-panel
in my dconfEditor
Will you please help me.
I installed Gnome 3 using sudo apt-get install ubuntu-gnome-desktop

It is a well documented issue about some of the function keys not working on laptops. I am having the same issue with my Display Function key i.e. the key that is used to switch to turn on the VGA output.
My question is, if we cannot get the function key to work, what is a way to do the task manually ?

I want to install libgflags-dev. According to this launchpad link, it is present in the ubuntu repositories : https://launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/gflags and http://packages.ubuntu.com/raring/libdevel/libgflags-dev
But when i try to sudo apt-get install it, I get E: Unable to locate package libgflags-dev
Why is this happening ? I have all multiverse and universe enabled from software center.
How to install it from apt-get ?
P.S. I know i can simply download the binary and make install it, but I want to know how to do this from apt-get.
I am using boost. I installed it using sudo apt-get install
. Now I am unable to find my boost lib file on my filesystem.
I want to include the path of the lib in my Qt project. grepping is taking too long :( I found the includes in /usr/include/boost
. But I also need to know the library path.
Was just wondering if there is any solid data available as to how many people are using ubuntu. I was also interested in the attrition rate with ubuntu users, etc.
