It started a month or 2 ago, my HP Stream 11" netbook with Intel® Celeron(R) CPU N3060 @ 1.60GHz × 2 and 3.8 GiB memory running with Ubuntu 16.04LTS suddenly started to slow down considerably. The system monitor shows 100% CPU usage quite often. The time to start is very long also. I did not change my use of the computer. I am trying to understand what is hogging it. How can I test the CPUs? Could the CPUs be spent after 5 years of daily use? Is it a virus?
Larry Golade's questions
I have a 64GB SD card mass storage. I recently bought a 64GB USB drive to duplicate all my files from the SD card in case of a failure. I would like to keep a daily update of the USB drive to mirror the SD card. How can I sort all the files across all directories on the SD card by date to select the most recent for copying?
The issue has been going on for 2-3 months: my password manager doesn't show my saved passwords anymore. My passwords are still being populated on log-ins and the offer to save user name and password is still working. The new passwords are being saved and retrieved on log-in. I just cannot edit or delete my stored passwords. I am running Chromium Version 86.0.4240.75 (Official Build) Built on Ubuntu , running on Ubuntu 16.04 (64-bit)
I am running Ubuntu 16.04 and chromium 86.0.4240.75. I used to be able to see my passwords in https://passwords.google.com/. Since a while now the password manager shows the following message: "You haven’t saved any passwords in your Google Account yet." I still have all my passwords stored and popping up when needed but I cannot see them anymore. Can someone tell me how to get password manager to show my passwords again? Another issue is that chromium used to offer passwords when one was requested for a website. That is not the case anymore.
I am using Chromium Version 71.0.3578.80 (Official Build) on Ubuntu, running on Ubuntu 16.04 (64-bit).
This morning my WhatsApp Web tab asked me to update Chrome with the following message:
WhatsApp works with Google Chrome 36+
To use WhatsApp, update Chrome or use Mozilla Firefox, Safari, Microsoft Edge or Opera.
What should I do to get WhatsApp Web running again?
I have a Minidell with SSD from 2009. I'd like to do a quick wipe everything and clean install to give it away. What is the fastest way?
Where can I find the commands for the startup programs? The name part is easy but I have no clue about where the commands are. Browsing option does not help much. I'd like to have at start Chromium, Audio recorder, Focus Writer, SD card, Sound setting.
I am looking for the commands to enter in the command box of the Startup Applications. The question "How do I start applications automatically on login?" does not explain how to show the Main Menu.
I have installed Ubuntu as a dual boot on a vista system with a 120GB HDD. Ubuntu needs a bit more room to operate. I have 65% free room on the vista partition but after defragmentation 2 "unmovable" files are located at the end of the partition. I would like to know how to remove one unmovable file called $bitmap and if it is safe to delete the unmovable swap file "pagefile" from within Ubuntu. If I manage to remove those 2 files I would be able to shrink the vista partition and consequently increase the ubuntu partition.
I have a HP Stream. The touchpad tapping is too sensitive. I often select text inadvertently. Is it possible to adjust it beyond what is available in the touchpad settings?
How can I speed up my Aspire ONE D250 manufacturing date 0911 (09 or 11?)?
Details:
- Memory: 2.0GB

- Ubuntu 16.04 LTS
I think it has become gradually slower in the last year. Now I have to wait for websites to load.
I often use several tabs in three separate browsers: Chromium, Firefox 50.1.0, and Opera 12.16.
Is the computer too old to cope with this workload?
I want to upgrade to 16.4 LTS and get the following message:
What can I do?
I am wondering if I have enough space. It's a netbook with 2GB RAM and 16GB SSD. The processor is Intel® Atom™ CPU N270 @ 1.60GHz × 2.
I might have unofficial software but how do I know? How can I then remove them?

This question has already been asked (How to fix GTK3 scrollbar behavior) but I don't know how to implement the answer: If I click in the scrollbar below or above the thumb it moves to the spot I just clicked. This happens in Firefox but not in Opera, the 2 browsers I use. Could someone explain how to fix the problem?
I have switched to Chrome because Firefox gets stopped with scripts not working (I don't know how to fix that issue). Chrome is OK except that google talk doesn't work. I would have to use hangout which doesn't work on my computer. I run Ubuntu 14.04 on a 6 years old mini dell 9 with 1Gb ram. Firefox works fine with google talk. I'd rather use Firefox if I wouldn't have the frequent slowdowns with the scripts issue. I have ordered 2Gb of ram to see if it improves the running of the computer.
My computer is only stable in Recovery Mode. I want to save the files on the HDD before I format the disk and do a fresh OS install. Are the commands for the root shell prompt the same as the ones used in the terminal? Are they similar to the ones used for DOS? Any pointers?
I have a netbook with 16GB memory and 1GB RAM (Mini Dell 9). Computer properties shows 14.4GB total capacity, 10GB used and 3.6GB free. Is it possible to free more memory?
I have also a HD card with 32GB but it's only there to store data, it is formated as an MS-DOS for portability and shows 17.5GB free.
I am trying to get Libreoffice calc in French to get the French function names. I tried to install the language package but I think I don't have the right version. My version of Calc is 3.5. Tools - options - libreoffice doesn't offer online updates. Do I need to update Calc first or can I just somehow install the French version?
I am trying to install OpenCPN, a navigation and chart program. The install guide recommend this:
It is also possible to install the package via dpkg or rpm, on the condition that all dependencies are met.To make sure that this is the case on Ubuntu, open a terminal window to get a command line, (Applications->Accessories->Terminal) and copy and paste the following line:
sudo apt-get install libwxgtk2.8-0 libwxbase2.8-0 wx-common libglu1-mesa libgl1-mesa-glx zlib1g bzip2 gpsd gpsd-clients xcalib libportaudio2
. Then proceed with the commands below.
I typed:
sudo apt-get install libwxgtk2.8-0 libwxbase2.8-0 wx-common libglu1-mesa libgl1-mesa-glx zlib1g bzip2 gpsd gpsd-clients xcalib libportaudio2
in the terminal and got this:
Reading package lists... Done Building dependency tree Reading state information... Done bzip2 is already the newest version. libportaudio2 is already the newest version. libportaudio2 set to manually installed. zlib1g is already the newest version. xcalib is already the newest version. libglu1-mesa is already the newest version. Some packages could not be installed. This may mean that you have requested an impossible situation or if you are using the unstable distribution that some required packages have not yet been created or been moved out of Incoming. The following information may help resolve the situation: The following packages have unmet dependencies: libgl1-mesa-glx : Depends: libglapi-mesa (= 8.0.4-0ubuntu0.7) Recommends: libgl1-mesa-dri (>= 7.2) E: Unable to correct problems, you have held broken packages.
What should I do now to fix the problem with libgl1-mesa-glx
?

I would like to assign
- Alt Gr + n to type ñ
- Alt Gr + i to type ¡
- Alt Gr + g to type ¿
How can I program those key combinations?
Ubuntu 12.04, Mini Dell 9 netbook, French Canadian keyboard
Update: I found out about the compose key under Settings, Keyboard Layout, Options. I defined it under "caps lock". I can now type an ñ in pressing first caps lock, then pressing Alt Gr + ~ then pressing n. I still don't know which key sequence I need to use to type an inverted exclamation '¡' or a question mark '¿'. Can someone help for this one?
2nd update: I found out about the rest of my question. I press once my defined Compose Key: Caps Lock, then I press Shift+1 twice to get '¡' and Shift+6 to get '¿'
The other topic regarding the same problem was not detailed enough. I hope mine is.
It would be nice to find a map of all possible characters produced with the compose key and the particular keyboard layout.
I was installing updates and ubuntu crashed. Now I don't have the internet connection anymore. How can I install ubuntu back without internet connection?
