In my ~/.kde/share/config/kioslaverc I appear to have some proxy settings. I'm not clear where they came from. There's no where I can find in the KDE settings that reference these proxy settings. Some programs though, like Zoom, attempt to use them.
What are these settings, where do they get changed?
I'm unable to figure out why Firefox is opening PDF files in LibreOffice. This happens when I open the file in the downloads view (the little down area on the toolbar).
When I first click on a PDF it correctly asks me to save the file -- I've set this option in the preferences. But when I click to open the downloaded file it uses LibreOffice.
If I use Dolphin (KDE file browser) and click on the file it correctly opens the file with Okular.
I don't know where Firefox is getting the PDF -> LibreOffice association for downloaded files.
I've attempted the solutions listedn in Firefox application associations not working in the 'Downloads' window and they are not working for me.
How can I disable gpg-agent? I don't wish to have any service retaining passwords and want to enter them every time.
I recall disabling this service once before, but I'm not having any luck on the newer distribution.
I want a translucent PNG overlayed on top of my screen (above all windows). I'm using this to mark a visible region while streaming.
So far I've figured out that qiv -transparent filename.png will add a mask to the window, but it's a boolean mask. I don't get translucent fading with the alpha channel.
I know several effects have opacity, and I can sent window opacity, so I'm hoping there's some way to display an image that way.
What program, tool, or widget can I use to blend an image onto the top of the desktop?
I have two monitors connected to my system, what I'd consider a primary and secondary display. I run a few applications on the second display.
The power saver will turn off the screens after some delay. When I reactivate the system (move mouse, touch key), the screens both come back on. However, the windows that were open on the second display are moved to the primary display.
Why does this happen and how can I prevent it?
I have a keyboard for my desktop computer with a Sleep/Hibernate key on it: ?. Pressing this key causes my desktop to hibernate, but it can't wake-up from this state correctly (loss of all USB input). I want to disable the sleep key.
I'm unable to find any button in the settings that control the behaviour of this button. The power management only offers control for the system power button.
It appears to be desktop specific as "How do I disable the sleep button on my keyboard?" refers to the Unity/Gnome settings, but I can't find anything for Kubuntu/KDE.
I'm okay with disabling hibernate entirely if I can't control the key. I don't need hibernation on my desktop.

I'm trying to get my F9 key to function as the dead_greek compose character. It's not working.
I have a custom keyboard layout in /usr/share/X11/xkb/symbols/us called mine. It has this entry for the F9 key:

I have other characters in thsi file as well, so I know the file is being used. I can also run xmodmap -pke | grep dead_greek and get this output:

The dead_greek key is there, but none of the Compose combinations work. If I type dead_greek + a for example I just a, not α. This combination is listed in the /usr/share/X11/locale/en_US.UTF-8/Compose file, which I presume I'm using since other compose sequences from there work (but I'm positive as I don't know how to check which Compose file is in ue).
Why is my F9 not working as a dead_greek compose key?
For debugging I also ran xev and pressed F9. I get the output state 0x10, keycode 75 (keysym 0xfe8c, dead_greek), same_screen YES, indicating at least it is partially working, just not working as a greek compose key.
I'm using KDE in case that makes a difference. I also have multiple keyboard layouts, but the output from xmodmap shows dead_greek in all of the layouts.
How can I get a popup virtual keyboard with emoji characters while typing in a text field?
I'd prefer a solution where selecting characters inserts them directly into the text field (that is, bringing up the virtual keyboard doesn't steal focus).
I'm using Kubuntu, though an Ubuntu desktop solution might work as well (I can try).
I have multiple audio devices and would like to switch between them on occassion. I can't however find any option to change the device in Firefox.
I've tried pavucontrol, even restarted Firefox, but the fallback device is no chosen for audio. I'd tried the Phonon settings and placed my desired device at the top of the list for Audio Playback but Firefox still isn't using it.
Ideally I'd like to switch while running Firefox but I could live with needing a restart, or using a separate profile.
NOTE: The same problem exists for recording, but at least on pages needing the mike it asks which device to use. There still doesn't appear any way to change this afterwards however.
I'm trying to create a keyboard mapping to insert a unicode character via the keyboard. It appears that xmodmap is perhaps the best option, but I can't figure out how to get a third-level character.
I have my third-level chooser mapped to Right-Win key, and this works for characters like the EuroSign. I used that key as my pattern. xmodmap -pk shows this for EuroSign

So I setup my comma line to try and match that

Note that if I put UFF62 as the first entry I can successfully replace the comma itself. That confirms at least that I've modifying the right file and the character is valid.
How do I get my Unicode character assigned to the third level?
UPDATE: This appears to only not work if I have the US-generic keyboard layout. When I switch to my German layout the mapped keys work. Is there something I have to do to enable the third-level ont he keyboard layout?
Note, my use-case is to just get a key mapped to a character. I also tried xbindkeys with xvkbd, but was unable to get it to insert unicode characters correctly. I also tried xdotool, but it also seemed to have trouble with unicode characters.
Is there some way to reduce the size of the widgets in the plasma (KDE 16.04) panel?
I have a right-aligned panel and they appear to expand to fill the width, which also increases their height (what I don't like).
I'm using KDE and for some reason my middle mouse button activates "Back" in both Firefox and Chrome. I cannot find anything about those browsers to disable it, so presume it is some kind of global behaviour. How would I disable/change this behaviour?
I'm having trouble getting my Brother DCP-195C recognized as a scanner on Ubuntu 12.04. I've installed the drivers from Brother, but scanning programs, like scangui or xsane cannot see the device. I checked with sane-find-scanner and the scanner is listed:

I added the udev rules as well to /etc/udev/rules.d/60-libsane.rules:

I've also tried linked the files from /usr/lib64/ into /usr/lib/.
What else can I try?
I'm unable to get a WF-2010 printer working with Kubuntu 12.04 (using the KDE printer settings). I've downloaded the amd64 drivers from Epson and installed them with dpkg. However, nothing much happens after install: a directory is created in opt but no additional drivers are available. I can manually unzip the PPD file I need, and install it, but I'm unable to print a test page (stays in the stopped state).
How am I supposed to install these Epson drivers?
At some point my OpenGL stopped working in Kubuntu 12.04. "glxinfo" reports Xlib: extension "GLX" missing on display ":0". I know it worked previously since I was using before, even developing for it, so there must be some update to blame. I just want to know how to fix it.
I've looked through several other questions/searches and mostly they deal with problems with Nvidia. I have a Radeon card, and I'm not using the binary drivers (I strictly use the supported drivers). Thus I'm at a loss as to what the problem is.
In my XOrg.0.log I find the below line, just after it finds all the Radeon stuff. Why is it attempting to use the NVidia driver (I don't have it installed).

I am using upstart for services on my servers. Writing a conf file and placing it in /etc/init is easy enough, but that doesn't seem to completely install. For one, the service --status-all doesn't list my new service. I checked and if I make a link in /etc/init.d to /lib/init/ubstart-job it'll show up in the status. But doing this manually makes me think I'm not doing it right, and there may well be other configuration steps which aren't being done.
What is the correct way to install an upstart service such that it is properly registered in all tools dealing with services?
