I recently moved to kate editor and so far loving it. I love dark themes and I am using this as my system wide default. Now I want to change the kate's ui to dark theme too. But sofar I am only able to change the editors color schema alone by settings > Configure Kate > Editor Component > Fonts & Colour scheme.
How can we change to dark theme UI in kate editor on ubuntu 18.04?
I have a software downloaded from web in deb and tar.gz files which I have not installed in my system itself. I want to convert these files as an AppImage for personal use. How can I do this?
In the web I have come across pkg2appimage which says
If you already have existing binaries (either in archive or .deb format or a ppa) then the recommended way to convert these to an AppImage is to write a .yml description file and run it with pkg2appimage:
There is also a list of examples for yml files but I really don't understand how to write yml files for appimages.
If we do an apt update or apt-get update it uses http for fetching updates. We can change the source to secure https by editing the url of sources.list /etc/apt/sources.list but most cases this doesn't work. Why doesn't ubuntu force https for apt update?
I want to check whether my root drive requires a defragmentation. If requried I am planning to do this sudo e4defrag -c /dev/<my partition> I followed this method to analyze my disk.
sudo touch /forcefsck
sudo tune2fs -c 1 /dev/<my partition>
Then I rebooted my system but its showing nothing on my reboot and directly goes to the login page. How to analyze and defrag a drive in ubuntu 16.04?
I had "open in terminal" in my previous ubuntu of 14.04 and it was a life safer, I can open terminal at a specific location and path. In ubuntu 16.04 also I want some thing like that so I followed this answer and installed nautilus-actions. The problem with this is that it will work only inside a nautilus and not work in desktop. Is there a light weight software which can be used to "Open terminal here" in both the desktop and nautilus?

I somehow missed "open in terminal" in my nautilus window. It seems that ubuntu 16.04 has built in "open in terminal" for nautilus. But my problem still exists. I cant open "open in terminal" from desktop.
The last week of next month ubuntu will most likely release 18.04 LTS. Now my system is 14.04 and next month I want to upgrade it to 18.04. Can I directly upgrade my system from 14.04 to 18.04 or I have to first upgrade from 14.04 to 16.04 and then to 18.04? I really want to avoid the second method of upgrading.

How should I update 14.04 to 16.04. I tried this method sudo update-manager -d and installed all the necessary software and restarted the system. Again I run sudo update-manager -d and it showed that my computer is upto date but doesnt have any button to update to 16.04
I want to wipe free space in my ubuntu partition and after a search found this sfill software which I installed using
sudo apt install secure-delete
Then I have used this command to wipe free space
$ sudo sfill -v /home
[sudo] password for shan:

Wipe mode is secure (38 special passes)
Wiping now ...
Creating /home/oooooooo.ooo ...
its stuck here for last 20 minutes and I don't know whether sfill is working or not. In my /home partion oooooooo.ooo file has a size of 27.6 MB and stays in this size. How to know the progress of wiping of free space in sfill?
I have installed swapspace a few weeks back. I have followed this answer for installing swapspace in my ubuntu 14.04
sudo apt-get install swapspace
#confirmed installation using "man swapspace"
I have used this application because it will dynamically make a swap space as per the system requirement and also I find the manual creation of swap space daunting.
But after a fresh reboot when I tried to find my swap space using these commands
$ swapon -s

Swap: 0 0 0
shows no swap space in my system?
How should I use swapspace?
I am trying to upgrade my ubuntu 14.04 to 16.04 but due to lack of space in my Ubuntu installed drive I was unable to proceed the process further and also I had 30 GB of unallocated space free in my computer. I used Gparted software from my Live USB and used it to move and shrink /dev/sda6 to get about 30 GB of unallocated space in the side of /dev/sda5. After the completion of moving and shrinking I tried to expand my ubuntu drive /dev/sda5 using move/resize option but in the middle of the process some error came and didnt allow the process to go further.
Then after a fresh reboot again opened Gparted from my Live USB but now its showing some error in my ubuntu partition(/dev/sda5) which is the same initial size and dosent allow me to expand the partition.
I also tried to fix the root partition using this
sudo touch /forcefsck
sudo reboot
but it didnt reported any error. What should I do now? what happended to the unallocated space I can see it in the image but its not inside sda5?

Now when I start gparted its giving this error (libparted bug found)

As the question tells how should I install jsonccpp in ubuntu 14.04. I have downloaded the jsoncpp-src-0.5.0.tar.gz form sourceforge. Then I opened nautilus using sudo and copied,pasted and extracted the tar.gz file in /opt. I have installed the cmake and used this code to install as suggested in the jsoncpp github

I want to stream youtube videos from command line using VLC media player. I was able to stream youtube videos using this command

The problem is that when ever VLC streams videos it uses highest quality video format available (480 and higher). I dont have a uniform interned download speed, some times I can play youtube video of 360 (my highest quality) and other times I can play a youtube video of 240 only.
Because VLC currently streams with highest quality (480 and above according to video) I cant stream using cvlc https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=m2Oo4kBHBNU this command. How should I force commandline VLC to play video of specific quality?

I have this script to shutdown my system after 30 seconds. I want to run this script by double clicking it (that option I changed in nautilus). This is the content of my script

to make sudo script executable without a password I followed this answer and I am able to execute this script from the terminal without using a password (sudo ~/test/test.sh). The problem is when I double click the above script it's again asking for root privileges:
shutdown: Need to be root
successful
Press any key to continue...
What's the problem here?
I have a script with a conditional statement and I want to find out how many times the then clause is executed, across multiple runs of the same script.
eg:

I made this script when executed will shutdown my system (after some time) and should enable a screensaver.

sudo shutdown -h +30
gnome-screensaver-command -a
There are mainly two problems in this script.
sudo shutdown -h +30 its not running gnome-screensaver-command -athat is, it activates shutdown but not the screensaver
How to solve these problem?
I regularly uses xterm for web browsing because of its image rendering property but the one thing which makes xterm difficult comparing to terminal is the copy/cut paste availability in terminal program. I have found this method and according to this i saved the below code in .Xdefaults file in home directory
xterm -ls -xrm 'XTerm*selectToClipboard: true'&
After the implementation of this code I am able to select text in xterm but not able to copy or cut paste (using mouse or keyboard shortcuts ctrl+c etc) any text from or to the xterm.
Any idea what went wrong?
I have created a executable bash script (using chmod +x) for monitoring my system and it works perfectly with out any error. Now i want to add this script on my start up in order to executing the script on every reboot. I have saved this executable file in my documents folder like this
/home/user/Documents/file.sh
For running this script on start up; from dash i searched and selected "Startup Applications" and added the details and location of the script and done a fresh reboot. But even after a fresh reboot the script is not working but the script is executing when i do it with terminal (eg ./file.sh). What changes should i make it to run my script on start up. If it helps this is the attribute of my script

Is there any method available using which we can change the position of side bar laucher from left to right. I have installed the unity tweak tool but it only allows to auto hide the launcher. There are many tutorials which teaches about how to move launcher to the bottom but i am unable to find any links pertaining the position change to the right
