I have a Mac Pro 2008 (a.k.a MacPro3,1), with Ubuntu 20.04 installed in EFI mode on it's own unencrypted SSD. The graphics card is a Quadro K5000 which has been flashed with Mac EFI compatible firmware. The card works perfectly in OS X El Capitan, and when using the nouveau drivers I can see the desktop. When I try installing the proprietary driver, however, I see only a black screen after booting.

According to NVIDIA's website, the Quadro K5000 is supported in Linux with the driver v460.39. This is slightly newer than the version provided by Ubuntu, but since this card is a few years old (released in 2012) I believe it should work with the package nvidia-driver-460.

Rather, I believed it should work. Investigating further, NVIDIA's website claims the newest Linux driver for the Quadro K5000 Mac Edition is v410.73. So it should be a simple matter of installing nvidia-driver-410 right? Well, there doesn't seem to be a package with that name provided by Ubuntu.

Right now I am trying out older drivers, starting with nvidia-driver-450, to see if any of them work with my setup. If I find a good one I'll update. Is it possible to fix my black screen issue while using the 460 drivers?

Update: The 450 drivers don't seem to work, same black screen. This time I remembered about dmesg and decided to check the output. I noticed these two lines:

I'm not sure if this is relevant but my monitor is a 23 inch aluminum Apple Cinema Display.

I've just installed Ubuntu 20.04 on my 13 inch 2015 MacBook Pro. When I go to the Bluetooth section in Settings, I can see my wireless headphones listed. The headphones are in their pairing mode, but when I click it on list it never connects. I've tried with three different sets of Bluetooth headphones (Airpods Pro, Airpods, and Bose QC35). What should I do to get my laptop to connect to Bluetooth devices? I know that Bose QC35 headphones work because I've used them with my desktop running 20.04.

I've installed Ubuntu 19.10 on my MacBook (Mid-2010 a.k.a. Macbook7,1) as the only OS. Right now my system is working but it has a few issues. One of those issues is that I can't seem to get GRUB to show a menu no matter what I do. Right now, this is what my /etc/default/grub file contains:

When my computer boots, I see a non-blinking _ symbol for about 5 seconds and then I see the normal kernel output that you seen when Ubuntu starts booting. If I press the ESC key when the _ is showing, the boot will not continue and the screen is stuck like that until I forcibly power down the system by holding the power button.

A clue that I have noticed is that the grub menu works perfectly fine when booting from the USB installer. I've looked at the grub.cfg on the USB installer, and it has this line which seems absent from /boot/grub/grub.cfg on my Ubuntu install: insmod efi_gop

So given this info, how do I configure GRUB to show a menu?

I've installed Windows 10 on an external USB 3.0 HDD. Currently, the only way I can boot it is by going into my BIOS boot options and choosing it from the list.

I've installed Ubuntu 16.04 on an internal M.2 SSD, but the Ubuntu installer didn't automatically add an option for GRUB2 to boot the external drive like I expected.

I'm not sure how to add a menu entry which tells grub to boot from the external drive which has Windows 10 installed. I know I can use the search command with the external drive's uuid to set the root variable, but I'm not sure how to use the boot command after that, or which file to edit to add boot options.

UPDATE: I ended up doing something like the accepted answer, but much simpler

I just added a new SSD to my laptop. I installed Windows on it, and booted into Windows, and all is good.

Then I installed Ubuntu 14.04 on my second SSD, rebooted, and no GRUB menu appeared! I installed some updates, rebooted again, then did sudo update-grub, which gave me this:

Still no Windows found! I can see the drive with Windows installed, because it is auto-mounted when I log in. WTH is going on and how do I fix it?

I don't want to use jailkit. My OS is Ubuntu 14.04. I am setting up a user account on my server for a kid I tutor, so he can run a minecraft server. He will be using putty to ssh into my server, and I want to limit his filesystem access to his home directory and basically give him free reign. He will need to be able to use bash, java, and nano, but I also want to give him access to python, lynx, and emacs, and maybe curl, wget, and git. It would be cool if I could limit the size of his home folder too.

What do I need to do to make this happen?

I have an encrypted 2TB HDD, and I would like to be able to enter a password at the decrypt step of mounting it, that will render the drive un-decryptable. I have seen a few article online about this but I don't know how to go about doing this. I am hoping someone else on here has already done this sort of thing.

I am using Ubuntu 14.04, and I can wipe the drive if I have to, as it isn't holding anything important right now.

I have Ubuntu 13.10 installed on my MacBook Pro 4,1 and it is working great. The only problem is that my broken speakers let out static all the time. I somehow broke the speakers while I was repasting the heatsinks a while back, and it isn't a big deal in OS X or Windows 7 because I can easily turn off the internal speakers by muting or plugging in headphones. The same doesn't work in Ubuntu, and the constant static had me so annoyed that I have added the snd_hda_intel and snd_hda_codec_realtek kernel modules to the blacklist to completely disable sound. Does anyone have a solution that will let me still use my headphones for music, just not the internal speakers?

Does anyone know how to do a clean install of Ubuntu on this chromebook? By this I mean that I want to totally remove ChromeOS and only use Ubuntu, I don't want to use Crubuntu. Just a link to a guide would be fine, thanks! :)
