I'm using Lubuntu 19.04 on my Mac in a Virtualbox VM. I'm noticing only in my taskbar an after image of what used to be the most recently loaded dialog. This problem only appears in the taskbar. In this case, you can see the faint image of "Battery Info" in the taskbar.
Is that a feature of Lubuntu 19.04, is that a video driver issue, or is it some other issue?
I'm using Ubuntu 19.04 (Lubuntu 19.04, in my case) with Virtualbox. If I don't have my second monitor connected to my laptop, the GUI transition animations (hover over menus, etc.) in GTK2, GTK3, Qt, and other widget libraries load very fast and my mouse doesn't jam. However, the moment I connect my second monitor and tell Virtualbox to load that as the primary monitor, the transition animations drag and the mouse occasionally jams until the transition animation caches, and even then, it caches only for so long and jams again while it rebuilds the transition animation cache. This is especially evident in Chromium browser and my Pluma editor, but not so much at all with the Q-based apps that come with the new Lubuntu 19.04.
Some articles have suggested that I could attempt xorg.conf tweaks. However, that file no longer exists and I only have /etc/X11/xorg.conf.d, and in that folder there's only a keyboard conf file, nothing more.
Why is it that when booting Virtualbox display into my laptop is fast, but booting Virtualbox display into my attached monitor is slow? Note that this problem didn't occur in Lubuntu 14.04 32 bit, occurred slightly but nowhere near as bad in Lubuntu 16.04 32 bit, and now occurs a lot in Lubuntu 19.04 64 bit. (They don't make a Lubuntu 19.04 32 bit.)
I'm running a Mac Air 13" (mid 2013) with an attached ASUS (Make:MX279/Model:MX279H) 27" display. My Mac tells me that my graphics chipset is Intel HD Graphics 5000 1536 MB graphics.
Note, I don't mean to imply here that I'm trying to boot Linux into a dual monitor setup. No, my Mac OS is, but my Linux I want to boot into my attached monitor, not in dual monitor config.
I tried loading Adobe Flash player in Chromium on Ubuntu 19.04 (Lubuntu in this case) using various answers on AskUbuntu.com. I get to the point where the Allow Flash popup happens. But when I click to allow it, it says "Right-click to run Adobe Flash Player". When I rightclick and choose Run this Plugin, nothing happens. I've tried to apply fixes using the Pepperflash technique, as well as the Adobe Flashplugin technique.
While messing around with Lubuntu 19.04, running lxqt-sudo to launch Pluma text editor as root so that I could edit the /var/www PHP projects I had, I noticed when rightclicking the file browser pane and choosing View Folder, that it opened up, at first, PCManFM-Qt. However, when it did so, it used a very ugly theme. (That's another question I have posted.) Then, I installed Nautilus. When I did, now when I open Pluma as root, it uses some file manager called Files, which I assume is Nautilus because it shows up when I do ps -ef | grep -i nautilus.
How do I tell Pluma to use PCManFM-Qt instead of Nautilus? What config file do I edit?
When opening PCManFM-Qt file manager as root from command line in Lubuntu 19.04, it opens using a default theme (which is rather ugly) and won't consider the choices made with lxqt-config. How do I change the root's lxqt theme so that PCManFM-Qt acknowledges it?
It looks like Ubuntu 16.04 ships with a broken and useless Inkscape 0.91.
I just installed Lubuntu Desktop 16.04 inside a VirtualBox VM (latest version of that) on my Mac Air 13" running Sierra version of OSX. I also have a copy of Ubuntu Desktop 14.04 in another VM too.
When I use the Inkscape that comes with it, version 0.91, I can't use the Text controls with it at all because it freezes up. Is there a workaround to fix that bug or to downgrade to the version that comes with Ubuntu 14.04? I rather liked the one that came with Ubuntu 14.04. Note that I've already tried upgrading to the latest stable version using an Inkscape PPA, but that failed too, so I did a purge remove, removed the Inkscape PPA, and intalled the Ubuntu 16.04 version, and, again, it still locks up when trying to use fonts.
Here's how to demonstrate the font bug:
Launch Inkscape.
On the new document, click the A on the left toolbar to create a new textbox.
Drag a marquee in your document for the size of your textbox.
Type the text "This is a test" and then choose Select All to select it all.
Click the T in the top toolbar to open the Text and Font control panel.
Choose DejaVu Sans.
Set the font size to 48 from the Font Size: selector on that control panel.
It freezes. Actually, you didn't know it, but it froze at step 6 because if you switch windows and come back after step 6, Inkscape is frozen and won't repaint its window.

I'm on Ubuntu 14.04 with the old-style GNOME setting from the GDM. (I don't like the new Unity interface.) Is there a way I can create a command that I can type in my terminal window to minimize it? It would be so awesome to simply type min and the terminal prompt minimizes while I focus on something else.
We have some Windows product testers that need versions of Windows to test on. I was wondering if there's a way to install Ubuntu Server, and then virtualbox, and then host these sessions over the RDP protocol simultaneously so that we could have like Tester A on Windows XP while at the same time have Tester B on Windows 8?
Can we also have an easy interface to reboot virtualbox instances if they jam up or suddenly shut down, without having to reboot the entire server?
At home, I have Ubuntu Linux 10.04 on a spare laptop and a DSL connection that's always on. What are the steps to securely (very important) share this on the web with like DynDNS or something and port forwarding so that I can access it over port 443 (HTTPS port) over the web and access the GUI of the desktop? My DSL router supports port forwarding.
See, sometimes I'm in a hotel with bad Internet (only ports 80 and 443 available) and need a way to connect to a power user workstation so that I can do emergency systems operations tasks for my employer.
I am running the new Mac Air 13" with OS X 10.8.2. I then downloaded the latest VirtualBox 4.2.6. Then, I installed Ubuntu 10.04 into the VM.
First off, after I installed the VirtualBox Guest Additions and restarted the VM, the Ubuntu desktop froze after the GDM login and I had to delete the VBoxGuestAdditions folders out of /opt and /usr/lib to get back to normal again.
Second, I go to Ubuntu's System > Preferences > Monitors and try to change the settings, and there's nothing higher than 800x600. I then tried the VirtualBox various View menu settings and tried again in Ubuntu's System > Preferences > Monitors and I'm still stuck.

How can I reduce the screen resolution (height and width) so that it can fit into a smaller video size on my website?
How can I pull out like every third frame so that the file size is not so large, yet not mess up the sound?
Not all Windows IE users can view OGV files. How can I convert to FLV (or, as a fallback, MP4) so that I can share on my blog?
I'm running Ubuntu 10.04.2 LTS Desktop. Being a web developer, naturally I created a "me.com" in my /etc/hosts file. Unfortunately, my name resolution is going out to the DNS before first checking my local hosts entry and I can't figure out why.
The end result is that if my /etc/resolv.conf contains nameserver 127.0.0.1 in there first, then I get a response back in my web browser from me.com (local) within less than a second. But if I don't have that entry, then my response takes sometimes as much as 5 seconds if my ISP is a little slow.
The problem was so troublesome that I actually had to file a question here (and someone resolved it) for how to automatically insert that entry into /etc/resolv.conf. But one of the users (@shellholic) here highly recommended (and commented back and forth with me about it) that I should file this question.
Do you know why my workstation's name resolution has to hit the DNS server first before hitting my /etc/hosts file entry? For now, I'm using the resolv.conf trick.
I'm on Ubuntu 10.04.2 LTS Desktop. (And by scanning /boot, it appears I might be on kernel 2.6.32-29-generic? Not certain.)
Anyway, after my last system update, now my screen lock asks me to login twice, whereas before it did not require this.
I assume this is a bug? And is there a way to undo this for now until the bug is fixed?
Unfortunately when I installed the fcron package to take a look at it, I didn't realize that I was also uninstalling Ubuntu Desktop and Anacron.
So, I then did apt-get install anacron ubuntu-desktop, which also removed fcron.
However, I need to know what instability issues I may now encounter because I have done this change and changed it back. I mean, now that anacron is back and ubuntu-desktop is back, am I out of the woods? Or, will I lose any important jobs that need to run periodically from anacron?
Made a sad discovery today. I have Ubuntu 10.04 LTS. My client is in the ad business and she had a marketing competition task for me. She wanted me to visit websites of the competitors, and export the home pages as PDF. However, she wanted me to do so with embedded hyperlinks.
As it turns out, Firefox (and even the latest Chrome) on Ubuntu 10.04 LTS do not embed hyperlinks in PDF web page exports.
Sure, there are several Chrome and FF plugins that let you export as PDF, but what these do is connect to the URL remotely, generate the PDF remotely, and then force a download in your browser to download it from a remote location. That's not good for me, though, because some of these competitor pages require an initial login. That means that all I get back on the PDF printing from these FF or Chrome plugins is a login page.
Is there a way to get around this problem, to fix the broken PDF printer on Ubuntu 10.04?
I want to use DropBox instead of Ubuntu One. But I like the idea of buying MP3s for 88 cents from Ubuntu One because it can help contribute cash to the Ubuntu project.
I have disabled and uninstalled Ubuntu One client on my Ubuntu 10.04 LTS workstation. Is there a way that I can still purchase and download MP3s from Ubuntu One without installing the Ubuntu One client?
I used to have a perfectly good working DropBox account on my Ubuntu 10.04 LTS computer. Somewhere along the chain of "sudo apt-get update; sudo apt-get upgrade" over the past year, my DropBox suddenly stopped working. Instead, I see Ubuntu One stuff on the menus in Nautilus instead of DropBox.
So, I did "apt-get --purge remove nautilus-dropbox", and then went to DropBox.com to download the deb file and reinstall it again.
But no dice. I get the DropBox icon in my "systray", and clicking it opens ~/Dropbox folder, but it does not sync with DropBox and rightclicking Nautilus does not show me menu items for Dropbox. Instead, I see items for Ubuntu One sharing.
I like Ubuntu One really only for the music purchasing because I am guessing that it helps Canonical.com pay Ubuntu's light bills. But I'm not interested in anything else with Ubuntu One besides that -- not interested in Ubuntu One offsite file storage. I really just want my Dropbox sync with Nautilus to start working again.
How do I fix this back so that Dropbox syncs with Nautilus again?
I have a laptop that someone gave me and it came with a PCMCIA card for the wireless connection. It is a D-Link Wireless WNA-1330 PCMCIA Card. When I installed Ubuntu 8.04, the wireless connectivity worked just fine without issue to my DSL router (that has a DHCP server on it). I was able to connect to the DSL router and surf the web.
I then ran the upgrade process to 10.04 in the Package/Update Manager. After the upgrade, the wireless card ceased to work. It would light up like it should, and it would see the network of wireless DSL routers in my neighborhood, but not let me connect with the WEP key.
When I checked the logs, I found it was timing out in trying to get an IP address for some reason. So, I read that I should set it to a static IP.
I set it to a static IP address and then it connected properly to the wireless router. The DSL router's network page also showed the connection. But then when I tried to surf the web, it wouldn't work. I tried pinging multiple hosts and all I could do was ping the DSL router 192.168.1.1. I also had packet loss when pinging that router.
So, I changed the config to use Google's Public DNS (8.8.8.8) and reconnected the wireless. This time, I could ping multiple sites on the web (with some packet loss) but could not browse them with the web browser. As well, I still cannot browse my router's management page on 192.168.1.1.
What do you think is going on?
At home, I have Ubuntu server with the UFW firewall. What command do I type to turn on local intranet access to my web server, but keep the outside world out from my DSL modem?
