I have a Lenovo Flex 6 14" laptop with a Realtek 8822be wifi card. Whenever I first loaded Ubuntu, my wifi worked fine. However, on subsequent boots, it would not show any access points available (not just my network, but none of my neighbor's networks showed up either). Sometimes, reboots fixed the problem, other times, it didn't. After some experimentation, it seems that rebooting to Windows and back temporarily fixes the problem.

The problem doesn't seem like it is a bad driver, as it works sometimes. I tried changing the /etc/NetworkManager/conf.d/default-wifi-powersave-on.conf to set wifi.powersave to 2 from its default value of 3, but that did nothing. Changing it to 1 allowed wifi to persist through reboots from Ubuntu, but if I power off the laptop, then start it up again, the wifi will not work unless I boot Windows again.

Any ideas?

I would like to be able to pipe all bash terminal commands through a certain command (for no good reason other than to play a prank on someone). I just want to pipe the stdout of any executed command into a predetermined program without doing anything special.

For example: If that predetermined program was cowsay

echo "Hello World"

should output

How can I achieve this? (Some of the fun programs I'd like to use to play pranks on others include rev, cowsay, and lolcat)

I was running sudo apt update && sudo apt upgrade -y yesterday. There was an update for the package ebtables (I looked it up and apparently it is iptables but for Ethernet?). However, apt was failing to install it.

I tried a reboot, sudo dpkg --configure -a, and sudo apt clean/autoclean/remove/install -f/update/..., but nothing worked.

What should I do now? Should I just hold the package (sudo apt-mark hold ebtables)? Is there a workaround to installing it?

When I curl a file, and pipe it to a file or another command, I see output in my terminal. I am not sure how this happens, as the pipe is supposed to take all the output from curl, right?

For example:

I use curl like this:

curl http://www.archive.org/stream/Pi_to_100000000_places/pi.txt | some_other_command > some_file

I do not want to pipe the status to some_other_command, I was just wondering how it was able to display the status. However, showing how to redirect both streams added to the answer, so don't remove that.

I have a process that I need to run at startup. It is something that needs to stay running the entire time that the machine is on. As of now I am just typing the following into bash everything I start my server.

command -f argument & disown

I know that I need to make an init script, but I had no idea how. After some research, it seems Ubuntu uses systemd (some references said Upstart, they aren't the same right?) as its init system. But all the guides I found online tell me to place my executable in /etc/init or /etc/init.d. Init is supposed to be a completely different init system.

Can someone please point me in the right direction? A sample systemd script or even an online guide would be a great help.

I am currently running Ubuntu 12.04 LTS (installed using Wubi) on a Dell Dimention 3000 (not a server). I want to install some software that will listen on a certain port, and shut down the system upon either a connection, or a command. I have tried using SSH, but I want something faster. Something similar to Tomcat's shutdown port is what I am looking for. Another option is possibly a tomcat webapp (I run tomcat on that server), that on load will shut down my computer. However, I definitely prefer another software to handle that task. Any help is appreciated.

I am trying to install Tomcat 7 on my Dell Dimention 3000 running Wubi 12.04 (not a server). I found instructions here: http://www.liquidweb.com/kb/how-to-install-apache-tomcat-7-on-ubuntu-12-04/, but can not get past step 1A. I get a 404 error when it trys to install some packages.

This is the code I used to install: sudo apt-get install tomcat7

I have previously installed ubuntu wubi 12.04 on my dell dimension 3000 with windows xp home. I succeeded, but I accidently made myself a standard user, not an admin. I uninstalled, then tried to reinstall, but it told me that it could not get the iso files, so i put the iso file in the same folder as wubi.exe.
When I ran the wubi then, it ran perfectly, but when i launched ubuntu it was "coping files", then it hung. The first time I installed it, I didn't have any trouble at all. Please help me.
