How to show title of gitk instance in application switcher?

I usually have multiple instances of Gitk open while working on projects. When I switch between Gitk windows I cannot see which Gitk instance belongs to which project, though.

The project title is written in the header of the window once have it in foreground.

Is it possible to show the window title in the application switcher?

How to fix UEFI dual boot (Windows 10, Ubuntu 20.04) on Toshiba dynabook?

I am trying to install Ubuntu 20.04 as a dual boot onto a Toshiba dynabook Satellite Pro L50-G-182 which has Windows 10 preinstalled. I used an Ubuntu live USB stick to install Ubuntu onto the last part of the SSD. The picture shows the disk layout (screenshot taken while booting from USB live stick):

When I restarted after the installation of Ubuntu then Windows started automatically without grub/Ubuntu showing up. I failed to fix this.

Solution attempts

There is a bunch of post here and articles with regards to this topic. However, none helped. Here is the short version of what I tried to fix this:

I checked the UEFI/BIOS. There is nothing about grub nor Ubuntu.

I tried to fix the dual boot from Windows via BCDEdit:

bcdedit /set {bootmgr} path \EFI\ubuntu\grubx64.efi

I tried Boot-Repair to fix the boot order.

I tried to change the boot order. Therefore, I booted from the Ubuntu live USB stick. Here is the output of efibootmgr:

Final result

First of all, thank you to everyone here for taking your time and sharing ideas and experience how to solve the issue.
I have to tell it all went different. I was about to restore the first full disk backup of the machine. By accident, I selected a backup of a another machine running Ubuntu. To my very big surprise - when I rebooted the machine after the clone process finished - Grub showed up and Ubuntu booted without any issue.
After that I updated the older Ubuntu installation to the current version and that's what I am running right now. Yes, I lost the Windows installation - but I still have the original backup - just in case.

How to let Ubuntu 20.04.1 recognize an unknown display to adjust its resolution?

I recently updated from Ubuntu 18.04.4 to 20.04.1 on a Lenovo T400 2765. When I connected an external Fujitsu Siemens P19-1A monitor via VGA it is shown as "Unknown Display" in Settings > Displays. This was not the case in Ubuntu 18.04.4.

Also, the native resolution (1280x1024) is not available.

Here is what xrandr tells about the monitors:

How can I make Ubuntu recognize the monitor? Is there a driver in Ubuntu 18.04.4 which I have to manually install?

I found this very good article on how to add a custom resolution but I would prefer to let Ubuntu recognize the actual monitor (brand/model) as before.

Could not calculate the upgrade

I recently had a segmentation fault issue with mesa and installed a version from ppa:kisak/kisak-mesa. This might cause the upgrade problem now.

The following would happen if I remove the colord package:

This does not sound like a good idea because last time I removed ubuntu-desktop the UI did no longer start-up. See linked post.

How can I resolve the upgrade problem without risking the segmentation fault to reincarnate?

The startup problem

I shut down Ubuntu 18.04.4 on my machine today and cold-started it somewhat later. Now it starts but no longer reaches the UI stage. The start process ends with the following output on the screen (tail of the output):

The only thing I can do is to press the POWER button. As a result Ubuntu shuts down.

GRUB & recovery mode

I entered into GRUB (2.02) by pressing the right SHIFT key at boot time.

I am using Linux 4.15.0.-112-generic. There are also 4.15.0.-111-generic, 4.2.0.-42-generic, 4.2.0.-41-generic, 3.13.0.-64-generic, ... available.

When I select 4.15.0.-112-generic (recovery mode) then the boot process does not get further. But I get to the Recovery menu: filesystem state: read-only).

When I choose Resume normal boot I get to the usual UI login.

I suspect that the startup problem is caused by recent package updates. I might have installed a partial package accidentally as I remember there was a warning about this in the Software Updater window. What would be the best to get the system back into a stable state?

A step by step solution

Since there is a segmentation fault happening with "mesa" I removed all packages via sudo apt-get remove mesa-vdpau-drivers:amd64 mesa-va-drivers:amd64 libegl1-mesa-dev:amd64 mesa-common-dev:amd64 libglapi-mesa:amd64 libgl1-mesa-dri:amd64 libglx-mesa0:amd64 which occur in the history.log listed above. As a result Ubuntu starts into a shell prompt.
Then I tried to install some up-to-date "mesa" packages. I found ppa:kisak/kisak-mesa and added it via sudo add-apt-repository ppa:kisak/kisak-mesa && sudo apt-get update.
Then I installed via sudo apt-get install mesa-utils libglu1-mesa-dev xserver-xorg-video-all without knowing what is needed.

~~Still UI is not starting.~~

Then I took a look at /var/log/dpkg.log and saw among others that gdm3:amd64 (GNOME display manager) was removed. I installed it, restarted and luckily could login again.

~~But the desktop is empty and I cannot launch any folder.~~

Then I reinstalled nautilus and the desktop (icons and folders) reappeared after logging out and on again.

Looks like this was it, basically.

How to fix internal microphone which stopped working on Ubuntu 18.04?

I am running Ubuntu 18.04.4 on a Lenovo Thinkpad T400. I have been using the microphone in the past without problems with applications such as Google Hangouts, Skype, ... - Recently, I tried to have a call and noticed that the microphone stopped working. Speakers are fine. I cannot tell how long the microphone misfunctions or if it stopped working with a software update or such.

What I tried

I checked System Settings / Sound / Input - there is nothing muted and the input level does not recognize any sound.
I checked alsamixer but could not find anything unusual. Here a screenshot where the internal microphone is selected (last column, red).
I checked puvacontrol. Nothing suspicious there.
I tried sudo alsa force-reload and the rebooting. No success.

I tried reinstalling alsa-base and pulseaudio:

sudo apt-get remove alsa-base pulseaudio  
sudo apt-get install alsa-base pulseaudio  
sudo alsa force-reload

Rebooting after. Microphone is still not working.

When I plug in an external microphone then the input level in System Settings / Sound / Input does successfully recognize the sound.
I let the pulse configuration to be created freshly:

```

What can I do to fix the microphone?

I am running VirtualBox 5.2_18 on Ubuntu 18.04 to host a Windows 7 instance as a guest system. The virtual hard disc is "dynamically allocated" and became too small for what I need to run within the Windows instance. I made four snapshots in the past if this is relevant. Therefore, I followed the large amount of articles on the topic on how to resize the virtual disk. Here is what I did:

Unmount the disk in VirtualBox
Resize the disk by executing VBoxManage modifyhd Windows7.vdi --resize 50000
Remount the disk in VirtualBox
Mount GParted ISO to resize the virtual disk

At this point VirtualBox understands the new virtual size (~50GB).
The actual size is still what it has been (13,42GB) as shown in this screenshot:

Than I boot the GParted Live CD. As highlighted in the following GParted screenshot the disk size is still around 30GB which was the old size of the virtual disk.

How can I let GParted recognize the new disk size?

How to reset the Nautilus window position? [duplicate]

Recently, on Ubuntu 16.04 the default window position of Nautilus windows is in the top left corner of the screen. The window sits behind the top menu bar and the left side Unity launcher as shown in the screenshot.

With a bit of precise mouse pointer positioning I am able to drag the window somewhere to the screen.

Is there a way to either reset the default window position or let Nautilus remember the last window position to fix the default behavior?

The repository sonar-pkg does not have a Release file [duplicate]

On Ubuntu 16.04 I added the following line to /etc/apt/source.list:

deb http://downloads.sourceforge.net/project/sonar-pkg/deb binary/

Then I run sudo apt-get update. The following warning shows up:

Desktop entry does not appear in Unity launcher

I created a .desktop entry for a custom QGIS installation in ~/.local/share/applications. For some reason the Unity launcher and Kupfer refuse to index the entry - it does not show up.

How to index System Setting in Kupfer?

How to deal with configuration style warnings occuring from TexLive 2012 installation?

I followed the advice of izx on how to install TexLive 2012 using the texlive-backports PPA. Before I started I removed all TexLive-related packages. The installation finished and everything seems to work fine. The only thing I noticed are some warnings in the output of the installer. Here is an excerpt of the output:

How to find out where $MANPATH is set?

How can I find out in which configuration file the environment variable $MANPATH is set? Is there a way to backtrace the values?

I am aware of that I can grep through the whole file system using find or grep. I am using zsh most of the time instead of bash. I run Ubuntu Precise.

Settings for multiple monitors are not stored

I am running Ubuntu 12.04. on a Lenovo Thinkpad T400. I connected an external monitor as a second display. The laptop stands under the external screen. The laptop has a native resolution of 1440x900 (16:10), the external monitor 1280x1024 (5:4). There are two graphic adapters: one internal Intel GMA 4500 MHD and an discrete ATI card. Currently, the integrated Intel is enabled.

I use the Displays application to arrange the position of the monitors so it look like this:

The problem:
Whenever I restart my computer the configuration gets lost. First, the displays are mirrored instead of extended. I have to press Fn + F7 two times to switch to extended mode. Second, the Displays settings still look like this:

I know this worked once when I was running Ubuntu 10.10. I cannot tell since when it does not work. Do you know how I can permanently store the settings?

Sometimes when I start Ubuntu and press Fn + F7 nothing happens. When I open Displays I and position the external screen above and press the "Apply" button nothing happens. Then, after a minute or so the settings apply suddenly. Do you know if there is a log file which could help to analyse the behavior?

apt-get errors after TeX Live 2012 update with tlmgr

I am running TeX Live 2012 on Ubuntu Precise. For the installation I followed this tutorial. Yesterday, I updated the packages (about 40 items) for Tex Live 2012 using the following tool.

$ sudo tlmgr --gui

The updates have been installed successfully and everything still worked.

Today, I noticed that apt-get outputs errors when I run sudo apt-get install something or sudo apt-get autoremove. Here is the console output of the latter command.

Unity: Nautilus folder opens in background

I am used to open a folder from the keyboard with a shortcut. The alternatives are:

Use Unity Dash with the shortcut SUPER + F to open the Dash File Lens
Open Kupfer with the configured shortcut (CTRL + ALT + SPACE, in my case)

Then I type the name of the folder and press ENTER if it is selected.
However, the window that opens up is not active but in the background. I have to press ALT + TAB to bring it into foreground.
I use Ubuntu Precise (12.04.).

Question: How can I configure Ubuntu, Unity, Nautilus so newly opened windows become foreground immediately?

Edit: This behavior only happens when another application is already open such as GEdit. It does not happen when the only other selectable entity is the Desktop.

Permanent custom keyboard shortcuts for Evince (Document Viewer)

I am using the Ubuntu document viever Evince. Lately, I found out how to add custom keyboard shortcuts for the program. I was searching for a way to add a shortcut e.g. for View / Best fit (also available as a button). What I found was the Keyboard shortcut page which describes how to setup shortcuts using gconf-editor. That worked as described. However, once I restart my system the shortcuts are gone. How can I set them permanently?

I want to create a bugreport using ubuntu-bug and I would like to include the log files of Gnome Display Manager (GDM) which I found in /var/log/gdm. To minimize the noise that may be in the logs I would like to empty them before I reproduce the bug.

How to install libboost 1.48?

I would like to install the latest Boost C++ libraries onto my 10.10 system using a PPA but cannot find one that works. Nordlöw already suggested good sources in a similar discussion but I could not install the library. The installer states that I have the latest version running.

The ppa:purplekarrot by Daniel Pfeiffer does not upgrade my current 1.42 installation.

Although I try to follow the exact instructions by fossfreedom there are no packages listed to being upgraded when I run sudo apt-get upgrade. Here is the output log.

When I try to install libboost-filesystem the only tab completions I am offered are the following.
