I made a screen recording, but then accidentally left it recording overnight for an extra 6 hours. In total I think it’s around 9 hours - and the file has hit 15GB.

Luckily it managed to save to the desktop, but I’m struggling to open it to trim it down.

I’m thinking the best way it to split the file into ~30 smaller files. I could then reassemble the desired ones.

Equally I’m fairly confident of where the useful content ends - around the 2:30 mark. I could calculate it more accurately if needed.

Could I do either of these things with a tool which doesn’t load the entire video into memory? I’ve used ffmpeg on Ubuntu before but I do not know if it can do something like this.

I normally use Super and Arrow Key to snap a window to one-half of the screen or the other.

About 5 minutes ago, it started to switch between tty consoles. I gather that this is intended to happen when Alt+Arrow Key is used, and Alt+Arrow key does have that behaviour.

How can I stop my Super key from acting like the Alt key in this case?

How can I batch rename a lot of folders from DD MMM YYYY to YYYY-MM-DD?

I just installed Ubuntu Gnome 16.04. I told it to save my documents - which worked. Some software had to be reinstalled. Now when I run sudo apt-get update I see this:

Is there an automated way to fix this?

I am a new user, who has just been told to run / execute a command. The answer has some text with a grey background like this text here or

sometimes this text here.

However, I don't know what "run" or "command" means in relation to Ubuntu.

How do I do this?

I know that I can use apt-get remove <package> to remove a program.

But apt is a program itself. Could I use apt-get remove apt to remove it, or would it get confused part way through?

When my non-sudo account tries to run a sudo command:

An incident is reported:

I know that these two commands do the same thing:

ls -la
ls -al

but I'm wondering if there is any preference between them. Is it better practice to order them in a certain way?

I would like Caps Lock to behave as if it were Shift Lock - so when you have Shift Lock on and press 1, it gives !. I am using GNOME, but if I can use a package for another DE on GNOME, I'm happy to hear!

I want to be able to move the current tab from the window (with other tabs) to a new window, in the foreground, keeping all other tabs open. I'm using Google Chrome, always up to date, on Ubuntu 14.04.2.

I'm happy for a script / extension / similar.

Bear in mind I have a number of windows open (maybe 3 or 4).

It can't be closing and reopening the tab because I may have unsaved details (e.g. I'm taking a screenshot of the typed content).

I know I can run the last command in bash, with !!, but how can I run the last line of output?

I am thinking of the use case of this output:

The program 'git' is currently not installed. You can install it by typing:
sudo apt-get install git

But I don't know how I can run that. I'm thinking of something like the !!, maybe @@ or similar?

Why does bash think the number 010 = 8?

x=010
echo $x
  010
echo $(( x+0 ))
  8
echo $(( x-2 ))
  6

I thought it might be binary, but 010 = 10 = 2. So why does it get 8, and how can I make it think 010 = 10 (and 010 - 2 = 8)?

On Lubuntu, I have two desktops and can change between them by scrolling.

How can I completely remove the 2nd desktop? I don't want to just unassign the scroll shortcut, I want the extra desktop gone.

I have the following directory setup:

/var/www/html

and

/home/tim/Website/files_here

The folder html is actually a link to /home/tim/Website. This means all my Website files are in my home area (they get included in the backup etc).

Is there anything wrong with this method? Is there a better way to get the homepage to be in /home/tim/Website?

Are symbolic links on a web server ever incompatible with users not on linux?

I have a single file (a PDF) and I want to have lots of identical copies in the same folder (200 would be nice) named file-001, file-002 etc.

How do I do it?

I know that LibreOffice is a bit like Microsoft Office, but I can't find the equivalent of OneNote, something that I used a lot before I moved over to Ubuntu, and I do miss the features that it had. Currently I use Evernote Web, or just nothing at all.

How can I find out what version of chrome I am using?

I would like a command line method, not the GUI - visiting chrome://chrome in the url bar. I need to be able to use it in a bash script.

I ran the command google-chrome --help, but it didn't seem to have a --version option.

I am trying to be able to play, pause, chose next track or previous track from command line, but unfortunately no one seems to know how to do this (I have goggled repeatedly). I need it to be a command so that I can use it with blue proximity, so pause when I walk away. Are there any commands for this?

How can I make my file so that I can double click on it, and it runs. It is a .sh script, but I also have files that say:

executable (application/x-executable)

in the description of what they are.

I can't run any of these from terminal, or by double clicking.

If possible, I would like a way using either the GUI or a Terminal, but not a combination of the two.
